For the second year in a row, Singapore's Changi Airport has been voted the world's best airport, with the top 10 list dominated by Asia and Europe with not a single U.S. facility making the top rankings.
The World Airport Awards by Skytrax, held at the Passenger Terminal EXPO in Barcelona, Spain, are based on 12.85 million customer nominations and the survey included 410 airports. Passengers were asked about 39 key performance indicators such as check-in, arrivals, transfers, shopping, security and immigration.
While Changi Airport won the world's best airport award once more, it was also named the best airport for leisure amenities: the airport building boasts a cactus garden, an orchid garden and koi pond, a sunflower garden and a butterfly garden. Terminal Three also has Singapore's tallest indoor slide.
"Changi Airport Singapore is showing itself to be much more than an airport," said Edward Plaisted, CEO of Skytrax. "Changi Airport offers a travel experience in itself and continues to develop its quality standards to be named the world's favorite airport again."
No U.S. airport made the top 10, and unsurprisingly, New York's LaGuardia Airport did not make the list.
Earlier this year, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said: "LaGuardia Airport is ranked the worst airport in America. That is a disgrace, my friends. And it is unacceptable." Vice president Joe Biden said the facility was comparable to what you'd find in a third-world country.
Incheon International, the primary airport serving Seoul, South Korea, came in second in the rankings just as it did last year. It also won awards for best international transit and best immigration service.
The former, according to Plaisted, "remains one of our most hotly contested awards categories, and for Incheon to triumph for the second consecutive year is true testament to the quality of customer experience."
Hong Kong International came in fourth place, ensuring Asia had three airports in the top five. Hong Kong took home awards for best dining experience and best baggage delivery, with Skytrax praising the airport for being a consistent high performer since the survey began 15 years ago.
"With its vibrant local culture, Hong Kong airport, caters well for both local and international customers and this is something that is recognised enthusiastically by the survey respondents," Skytrax said.
In third and fifth place, respectively, were two major European hubs, Munich and Amsterdam Schiphol. The former airport returned to the top three for the first time since 2006, clinching the awards for best airport in Europe and Central Europe as well as for best staff on the Continent thanks to what Skytrax called its "renowned Bavarian hospitality."
In sixth, seventh and eighth places were Tokyo Haneda International Airport, Beijing Capital International and Zurich, with the ninth spot taken by Vancouver International, the only airport from North America on the list and retaining the award for best facility on the North American continent.
Let the nation bragging competition begin!
to be honest im not at all surprised by The U.S's lack of placement when it comes to service
our policies are borderline stagnant and anything that does get passed is usually a watered down alternative
we'll never get nice airports :(
Yeah no shit that our airports suck :v:

I think its because you guys see it as something like a train station, and the others see it as a F&B heaven, shopping mall, etc.
Airports are just a station that you wait for in the US. I think if you guys can open up, not only will it be better for more people to fly in, but make jobs as well.
only one on the list I've been to is Schiphol and I can say it's a very cool airport.
Unfortunately when I was there my flight was delayed until 1:30am (originally due for 7pm) and I remember sitting near the gate for our rescheduled flight and watching two mice or rats or whatever crawl about in the gate opposite ours
good nonetheless
Aren't airports in the US the most paranoid places? Since 9/11 it's been something along the lines of "You! Get in line! Drop your bags! Welcome to the land of the free!" says the officer with the machinegun.
Yeah no shit Changi is the best. Its the port of transit to everywhere on earth, when you have millions of people staying there for hours waiting for their next flight you have to entertain them somehow.

the TSA tends to make airports feel more like a totalitarian regime than a friendly commute terminal :/

You know its funny, I almost never see police officers armed with submachine guns or assault rifles in US airports, but every time Ive traveled abroad Ive been surprised to see either police officers or actually military MPs standing guard with them.
Our airports are usually pretty old and when they need to expand they just slap additions to them on.
I think the worst ones I've been to are Gatwick and LAX
Like Gatwick shoves hundreds of people through one customs booth and it takes hours to get through it some times while 10 citizen booths are open and no one is going through them.
LAX you gotta walk 2 miles to get to customs and then 2 miles back. Totally unamerican
I don't know about that list.
Tests made in Germany have shown that many Frankfurt got some deficiencies (for our standards I guess, which are pretty high) and that Düsseldorf is one of our best airports, yet in this list Frankfurt is way above Düsseldorf.

I was quite impressed with Saint Paul International Airport in Minneapolis.
I've been to Incheon Airport several times, and I've always hated it because it's always dark as shit when I've been. Like turn up the lights, please, I want to see where I'm walking. Otherwise it's fine.
Yeah vancouvers still on the list in the top 10. Not many things can I say I'm proud Vancouver has, but at least we have a nice airport

Tedious as fuck
The worst airport I've been to was in New York. Terminal had two places where you could buy food, and both of them sucked immense dick. Expensive, incredibly shitty service and their card reader for some reason rejected my card, so I had to withdraw from an ATM (where you have to withdraw at least $30 at a shitty exchange rate - and I was about to go home). So from my singular experience, yes the US airports suck.

New York in General sucks
Ive always liked Dubai's airport, Bangkok's too.
I thought O'Hare international (Chicago) was ight. It made me more comfortable about being my first flight. It was just American Airlines that sucked.

dubai's is cool as heck, too bad I was only there for connecting at 3am local time
South Korea keeps winning "best ___ in the world" awards.
Dubais airport is awesome. Spent 3 hours in the middle of the night wandering round waiting for friends flight to arrive and connect on. Airports are awesome
I got wasted in Heathrow once with some of my family as it was our chance to see one of my brothers before he went back on the rigs off the coast of Nigeria, and we hadn't seen him in a year or two.
Did the job, the bar served someone underage (i.e. me at the time, I was 17) and we could buy chocolate before we made our drunken journey back down to Portsmouth.
Wasn't too bad the time I flew to Spain from it either, now I think about it...
I remember I got let into a gold flyers club in Hong Kong once, what an experience.

Ohare actually isn't too bad in my experience, its huge but it actually has some infrastructure to handle its shit. On the other hand LAX is literally hitler and it lives up to every bit of its bad reputation holy shit
Nothing like standing in lines for immigrations for over 3 hours because it was lunch time and so only 3 booths were open to serve 2 recently arrived 777s
Nothing like having to hurry to make a connecting flight 4 hours apart
Narita Airport in Japan is a goddamn nice airport.
Both Schipol and Heathrow are great airports, but man those fuckers at heathrow have some attitude
You damn britbongs
Maybe it's just me but Schipol almost makes me feel at home, all those Dutch police and their cool berets. At LAX you can spot more than a few of the homeland security guys rocking M4s, UMP-9s, and MP5s
Admittedly LAX is much easier to get thru when you're american and a TWIC holder
Meanwhile, the worst airport:

My mom has been in the Boston Airport Gulag for 5 years after she brought a water bottle through customs.
She's just glad they caught her before she did something dangerous.
When I was flying back to Canada from Boston, the Terminal I was in felt like a storage bay, wall and ceiling panels missing. There was a hole in the wall behind the toilet.
The only security check was a single X-ray machine and metal detector, and 2 people from Homeland Security, I didn't even have to take my shoes off.
It felt like what it did before all the post-9/11 Security checks. Guess they don't think anyone going to Canada is that dangerous :v:
