Summary: One of Microsoft's main goals with 'Threshold,' the next major version of Windows, is to win over Windows 7 hold-outs. Here's the latest on Microsoft's plan, according to my sources.
And not too surprisingly, one of the Microsoft Operating Systems Group's main goals in designing and developing the coming operating system (OS) release — which may or may not ultimately be branded as "Windows 9" — is to try to make it more palatable to hold-out Windows 7 users.
In order to do this, Microsoft is working on including in Threshold lots of new features specifically aimed at "desktop" users, meaning those who interact primarily with their Windows computing device from a desktop or laptop PC with mouse/keyboard and optional touch.
Word of warning: I'm going to punch the first person who mentions the phrase "Windows Cycle".
We'll see about that.
Finally.

*THWACK*
Let's see if Microsoft can steal some actually useful features this time

It might actually be good. Improved desktop experience is welcome. Not desktop-tablet hybrid crap.
Lets hope intel actually makes usb3 drivers for it
I actually cannot use windows 8 because I have an intel motherboard and windows has super shitty native drivers for usb 3, resulting in crazy lockups no matter what I do.
I admit I really hope windows 9 has the option to use metro. You know, like how, you know, windows 8 should be. That's the reason everyone hated it. I love metro but "just get classic shell" is not an argument.

Good, I'm glad I've so far avoided 8, everytime I use a pc or laptop with it I just facepalm when I try to do practically anything. Maybe I'm becoming an old man who just hates "this new fangled technology." Myahh *shakes fist*

Why punch people when you can punch windows out.
Its probably going to be great because Windows 8 was shit guys
Oww jesus christ

Doesn't intel provide any USB3 drivers for your motherboard?
Unless they rebuild the wireless stack and support for older versions of DirectX, I'm going to keep sticking with 7. A lot of old games just don't work in 8/.1, and since my PC is a Steambox with a Windows backend, that's no good for me. (I've got Steam BP to run as the shell at boot on a dedicated account, functioning similarly to a Steambox. But not crap.)
As for the wireless stack, I've yet to find a USB or PCI wireless adapter that doesn't suffer from spotty, intermittent, or slow connection to my router. It's the only PC in the house with that issue, and it was the only one on 8/.1.
thank god we didnt need that good innovation in the first place
i rather live in a box and hide from change, glad microsoft is allowing me to do that

what about windows 2000? wasn't that a mainstream windows os?

It's like windows 7 just faster.
It's the same exact shit. Just install Classic Shell and you have your start menu back and everything.
Also yes, all the hate for Windows 8 is based on misinformation and misunderstandings. It's just a straight up better version of Windows 7.
Doesn't intel provide any USB3 drivers for your motherboard?
they do, but not for windows 8. I even tried forcing it to use windows 7's intel usb3 drivers
windows "Natively supports it" but the drivers are shitty so it's far slower, and months into it it actually directly caused my computer to bluescreen like crazy.
what about windows 2000? wasn't that a mainstream windows os?
Windows 2000 was alright for the most part.
Man, that's being optimistic to the maximum, isn't it?
How old is Windows 7 anyway? It kind of feels as if Microsoft is just throwing out a new OS every few years to replace the previous OS.
It didn't feel long between 7 , 8 and now 9.

Yes but one of these fills the screen when you want to check on something real quick and the other doesn't.

It's not really faster in anything that matters. If you're on w7, there is no reason at all to upgrade to 8.

I'm going to say this with honesty: W8 is convoluted in quite a bit. I'm not going to install software to fix something that should work out of the box. I don't want to start a flamewar but when I do something as simple as changing a setting in W8(say pair a BT device iirc) it's a pain, so I switched back to W7. I don't use it on a tablet so I'm not a fan of it on a desktop.

I use run to navigate my computer anyway

Unless you're using office applications.
If your gaming there are 0 differences. This is from someone who prefers 8.
The only thing I really don't like about Windows 8 is that they shifted around some of the commands for no particular reason. But apart from that, it's pretty much all just new (eg more Windows + commands) or different (eg Metro) stuff.
That said, I do prefer the old, smokey glass-style design. But I guess I'm just not a big fan of that type of hyper-minimalism.

you have to realize most people skipped vista, which came out 5 years after XP [sp]which is an actual long time[/sp] and windows 7 replaced it in about 3 years, and windows 8 replaced that after 3 years
the gap between windows xp and me/2000 was a single year and the gap between 98 and 2000/me was about 2 years

Who uses the directories? It's what you pin to the menu that you use. If you want anything in the directories you search for it, that's faster.
Faster boot times, non-hideous window borders, lower memory footprint, improved text rendering and improved power management for portable devices.
Boot times are not faster if you cold-boot. It is faster only because it does hybrid where it hibernates some things. Just hibernate your w7 and it will boot just as fast.
From my limited experience power management is the same since both w7 and w8 drain battery on my laptop at the same rate.
Have no idea about the other things so no comment.
it still wont run on my athlon

you don't need a full screen menu to open a program. just hit windows key, type in the name, hit enter
