• German Supreme Court Rules Not to Ban NDP
YES, Germany’s National Democratic Party (NPD) is “related to National Socialism”, the country’s supreme court in Karlsruhe said on January 17th. And yes, its aims are to undermine Germany’s constitution and ultimately to establish an ethnically pure German Volk. And yet, the red-robed judges opined, there is no sign that the NPD could come close to fulfilling its goals. The party, it ruled, will therefore not be banned. This landmark verdict ends a decades-long saga of failed efforts to declare Germany’s neo-Nazi party illegal. A previous attempt to outlaw the NPD foundered in 2003 because government-paid informants were among the witnesses, tainting the evidence. The latest push began in 2013, when the federal legislature’s upper chamber, representing Germany’s 16 states, brought a new case. But the standard of proof for banning political parties, mandated by the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, is high. In societies that value free speech and association, it is not enough to prove even the worst motivation; a party must also have a “real potential” to make good on evil designs.
edit : oh fuck the title, it'd NPD not NDP my life is over. source: http://www.economist.com/news/europe/21714770-national-democratic-party-truly-nasty-not-strong-enough-be-able-fulfil-its
The NDP is a Canadian party. they're okay but they're not nazis :v:
Good. I don't like the NDP but banning parties is undemocratic.
NDP is English, National Democratic Party (of Germany) (Nationaldemokratische Partei Deutschland) so no worries Wow, Supreme Court at Karlsruhe. It is weird really, walked pass tht place today, as Nazis' lawyers were there defending their case or something I suppose.
No way, a Facepuncher from my area

You see this is why I've always liked the Russian Parliament in this regard, they've got their democracy party and then a socialist party and the other end of the spectrum. It's an interesting system while could be corrupted it works for them. As for this, I imagine this party would function in a system way trying to implement fascist policy's like large programs decided to spying on those who would go against the state.
No way, a Facepuncher from my area
Oh god, there's more of those

So it kinda makes sense.
Good. I don't like the NDP but banning parties is undemocratic. No way, a Facepuncher from my area
I'm a bit south of you guys
Well, AfD kinda stole all the right wing people from the NPD. So it kinda makes sense.
Not really, the blatant hardcore nazis are still with NPD.
http://www.reuters.com/article/us-germany-npd-ruling-idUSKBN15111H That's as sick of a burn as it gets in the courtroom.
It's fucking bullshit, that's what it is. Since when is "strength" a factor?
It's fucking bullshit, that's what it is. Since when is "strength" a factor?
The NPD is currently a centralized collection point for Nazis. It's easier to keep tabs on them when they're all in one party. Disbanding the NPD would just result in them splitting apart, making the Job of the Verfassungsschutz so much harder. This is why their little disruptive power in democracy is tolerated, as it's seen as the lesser evil. The NPD doesn't have any real political power, and I'm certain that it will stay like this forever, as the german people, however stupid they are these days, aren't as stupid as to repeat their mistakes of the past.
So does that mean we need to unban the KPD now?
So does that mean we need to unban the KPD now?
Probably only if they ask. Last year was actually the 60th anniversary of its ban, interestingly enough.
"these nazis aren't a serious threat to democracy", said germany in the 1920s
Oh god, there's more of those
(I understood this as very tongue-in-cheek when rating it.) It would be interesting to make a map of which regions are represented :v: I'm a bit to the north from there, but I moved so it's not where I'm originally from. [editline]18th January 2017[/editline]
"these nazis aren't a serious threat to democracy", said germany in the 1920s
We have a few more safeguards in our laws against that kind of stuff now. That and most people still really hate them now.
"these nazis aren't a serious threat to democracy", said germany in the 1920s
They're certainly a much smaller threat to our democracy than to the US democracy ;)
The NDP is a Canadian party. they're okay but they're not nazis :v:
Yeah, depending who in the right-wing you ask, they'll say they're communists.
Yeah, depending who in the right-wing you ask, they'll say they're communists.
Given that those people don't even know what communists are, I don't consider that much of a slight.
