A PUB singer has been arrested for performing the 70s chart hit Kung Fu Fighting as two Chinese tourists walked past. Simon Ledger was singing at the Driftwood Beach Bar in Sandown, Isle of Wight, on Sunday when he launched into the disco classic, The Isle of Wight Gazette reported. A Chinese mother and son were reportedly walking past at the same time and took offence. "I don't even know who the pair are," Mr Ledger said. "It is all quite amazing how an evening of performing on the beach can end you up in a (prison) cell. "The police phoned me when I was in a Chinese restaurant that night. They arranged to meet me and I was arrested. "I thought it was a joke but they were serious. They seemed pretty amazed but said the law is the law and it was their duty. It's political correctness gone potty (mad). "There are plenty of Welsh people at our shows - does it mean I can't play any Tom Jones?" Mr Ledger, 34, said. Bar owner Sean Ware said the song is not racist. "The song is in no way racist and nor is Simon. There is no way he would abuse anyone," Mr Ware said. Police said a 32-year-old man of Chinese origin claimed he was subjected to racial abuse. Mr Ledger will be interviewed by police. So he was singing about karate, what the hell, china?
I hate political correctness, people need to learn the correct definition of Racism and Prejudice, this is in no-way racist or prejudiced, if he started singing the song JUST as they walked past, it could be stereotyping, but the fact he was mid-way into the song when they walked past just show it's insane.
They seemed pretty amazed but said the law is the law and it was their duty.
It's against the law to sing the 70's hit song 'Kung Fu Fighting' in the vicinity of an Asian person?
It's against the law to sing the 70's hit song 'Kung Fu Fighting' in the vicinity of an Asian person?
Obviously.
That'd be like me getting arrested for breaking out into "Baby" every time that kid that looks like justin bieber in my school walks by.
You guys realise that there is always more to a story like this than the trash media decides to report?
That'd be like me getting arrested for breaking out into "Baby" every time that kid that looks like justin bieber in my school walks by.
That has intent to it.
That's crazy. Apparently the police who arrested him thought it was crazy but still had to take the allegation seriously. If there's nothing more to the story than what's reported nothing will come of this. There might even be backlash on the ones that accused him of racial abuse.
This is ridiculous. The very definition of PC gone mad. [editline]30th April 2011[/editline]
So he was singing about karate, what the hell, china?
Kung Fu =/= Karate
I know that, thanks for pointing out something I already know. :smug:
So he was singing about karate, what the hell, china?
Karate isn't Kung Fu. Kung Fu is Chinese, Karate is Japanese, and Kung Fu is much older.
Repeat my previous post. =)
Really?
called getting sacked... duh
just reading the thread title i knew it was the UK
What I don't get is how people can be from the Orient and get mad when I say they're Oriental.
Things like this are the only reason I don't hate the BNP.
I'll have to see if there's more info on this. There's probably more to this though since I'm not exactly sure of the quality of the original article. If he started the song right when he saw them then yes, there's definitely some stereotyping going down and the people had the right to be offended, to the point of calling the cops is a different story. If not then he really shouldn't have been detained. More likely though is that its just a series of unfortunate coincidences. Honestly if I was one of the Asian people and heard I'd jump through the door with a flying kick to add to the song. Then again I'd also be helping the stereotype. [editline]30th April 2011[/editline]
Things like this are the only reason I don't hate the BNP.
Why because they're going to end PC?
Why because they're going to end PC?
No, because overuse of PC would come to an end. Sure, they'd go way past that, but at least utter bullshit like this would stop.
Some people are just a little easy to be offended
Title confused me, I thought the couple was singing and some random guy was arrested because he heard them singing. The actual article makes much more sense.
So if an American got into Canada and started singing about maple syrup, would that be illegal? Seriously this couple's logic is retarded.
BRB taking ferry over to the isle and whistling various songs to see if I get arrested

those cops were fast as lightning
those cops were fast as lightning
in fact it was a little bit frightening
Sigh, embarrassed to be Chinese at times
Where is this place? [sp]England?[/sp] Great Britain
I had a straight-out-of-china chinese exchange student last year and I asked him if he could give me a pen and he got up and started trying to fight me. Also, in english class we're reading of mice and men, and the teacher asked us about the character Lenny, to which I responded "he's retarded." Then me and the teacher got into a huge argument on the use of the word retarded and eventually ended up with me losing it and telling her to shove her political correctness up her ass because retarded is a fucking word and I can use it whenever the fuck I want to.
