Ukrainian protestors destroy Lenin statue in Kharkiv
Nationalists have torn down a statue of Lenin in the centre of Ukraine's second-largest city, Kharkiv, in a move supported by officials.
People cheered and leapt for joy as the statue came crashing down.
On Sunday night, when nationalist protesters had already gathered around the statue for a "Kharkiv is Ukraine" rally, the governor of Kharkiv region, Ihor Baluta, signed an order to dismantle the statue.
Some correspondents say the order was probably a last-minute face-saving move
Honestly I find it dumb to destroy an old monument that doesn't really have anything to do with Putin

But the monument was BALD! Close enough.

An old monument that symbolizes Soviet/Russian domination over Ukraine? Seems pretty straightforward to me.

Ah yes I always wanted advice about world peace from a man who beat his wife.
Even though i don't really care about Lenin, i think it's not the way you deal with monuments. If you don't like it, just remove it in a proper way, not this "grab and crash" thing.
I'm getting a big sense of deja vu from this thread.
Oh right.

It's a symbolic move, the residents want to distance themselves from Novorossiya, where the perception of the Soviet era including Lenin is a lot better. Besides, to be honest an average Lenin statue like that don't have much artistic importance.

But that isn't fun nor tradition, who "properly removes" statues of symbolic oppression in protests.
It was set to be demolished anyway.

If you understood what Lenin represented to soviet-bloc countries that had to suffer under Soviet Rule and oppression (Especially the Ukraine, considering they had to suffer systematic extermination and starvation), then you would understand why that statue was knocked down, Sadam Hussein style.
Having a Lenin statue in the Ukraine would be like having a Josef Mengele or a Heinrich Himmler Statue in the middle of Jerusalem.

call me when they destroy a Putin statue, then I'll be glad
It would be better if they just put it down from there and into some storage, perhaps a museum would like to exhibit it later down the line.
And I know there are shitloads of those statues but still. Gotta remember all of history, not just the victor.

Destroying one of literally hundreds of lenin statues isn't going to prohibit people from learning history.

"Hey guys, don't tear down the Berlin Wall. Yea it's massive representation of Soviet oppression and a massive hindrance on daily life, but just think of the history!"
Hopefully they tear down every other monument to Soviet oppression.

I didn't mean to imply that.

More like "hey lets leave some pieces for the sake of history!"
Which is exactly what happened.

Ghandi was also a massive racist, guess we should forget about everything he said about peaceful protest!
It's been 23 years since the collapse of the Soviet Union, and ever since then they've been ripping down statues whenever they're angry about something. You'd think Eastern Europe would have no statues left by now.

you vastly underestimate the plethora of Lenin statues

Sell it to a private collector or scrap off the metal, which ever gets more money.

its a symbol of soviet (russian) domination over ukraine, a theme that is currently kind of a hot topic for ukrainians if you havent noticed
you'd have to be pretty braindead to not understand how a statue of lenin might draw the ire of ukrainians who want to disassociate ukraine from russia

was going to say the only people who would do this would probably be the ones who seventy years ago would immediately grab nazi guns and go burning down villages
