The historic move was approved by 107 votes and ends 45 years of only specialist men being able to issue fatwas in the Kingdom. The female muftis are to be chosen by a royal decree. Al-Bishi, a specialist in Shariah policy said that women are central in Islamic communities and the move allowing them to issue fatwas would benefit society. “This recommendation coincides with the Kingdom’s comprehensive renaissance in the fields of social, economic, political, scientific and juristic.” Al-Bishi said. He added that the global and regional fluctuations and transformations have forced the Ifta institutions and the scientific and research centers to develop their programs and originate new specialties compatible with the changing course. “It also imposed the need to introduce women with jurisprudential skills and expertise in emerging cases to repel external interference from those who deal with Saudi women’s issues contrary to Shariah law and the system of this country,” he said.
Watch this be the thing that makes Trump add Saudi Arabia to his Ban List.
im genuinely surprised saudi arabia is changing what the hell
King Salman has recently been pressuring for women's rights, and the government has been heavy handed in enforcing his changes. More specifically, very soon it will be legal for women to drive, and anyone who complains about it online can be charged and multiples of officials have been sacked for disagreeing with the policy. [editline]1st October 2017[/editline] Saudi Arabia has been changing very slowly for a while now, but it's starting to become a bit more noticeable. It's still going to be a shithole for a while, but if their rulers continue being more progressive down the line then in two generations of rulers we can really see their society change for the better.
The next step is to end the female male companion law that they've had for a long time which would make women able to do a bunch of things without a male guardian
how is all this shit happening so fast?
like anybody's gonna follow a woman's fatwa, amiright guys? [sp] saudi men can be horribly sexist, at least the ones i have known from school.[/sp]
how much time left until saudi arabia becomes more liberalized than the united states
how much time left until saudi arabia becomes more liberalized than the united states
well you can still stone gays and thieves so give it a few decades [editline]1st October 2017[/editline] this is less than a baby step but at least something is happening

Ok, was I sucked into an alternate dimension where Saudi Arabia is actually not trying to be awful?

The oils not gonna last forever and skilled workers are not gonna wanna stay in/emigrate to Saudi Arabia when you have more developed nations that arent as backwards in social policies. The only reason you see this happen is because of money.

The migrants don't really have any role to play, have no say in local governance and pretty expendable if a cheaper source of labour (read Africa) can be sourced. They're likely doing this because this shit keeps the public occupied while they can do other things in the interim. It makes them look like winners on the world stage, keeps the local population occupied with a battle of the sexes (though this might be problematic in the future) and allows them to do whatever it is they plan to fly under the public radar without interference.
I was getting unconfirmed reports of them cracking down on dissidents, not sure how true that is.
They are and have been, but that's mostly because of the quiet proxy war that Qatar's been having with KSA for nearly 5 odd years now to undermine them (and one of the many reasons for the recent kerfuffle).
