Scottish same-sex marriage bill being given final considerations
The first same-sex weddings could take place in Scotland this autumn, with laws allowing gay marriage expected to be approved by parliament later. The Scottish government said the move was the right thing to do, but Scotland's two main church organisations are opposed.
Religious and belief bodies would "opt in" to perform same-sex marriages.
Ministers said no part of the religious community would be forced to hold such ceremonies in churches.
The first same-sex weddings in England and Wales will take place from 29 March, in the wake of legislation already passed by the Westminster parliament.
In Scotland, same-sex couples currently have the option to enter into civil partnerships, but SNP ministers brought forward their Marriage and Civil Partnership Bill, saying the move was an important step for equality.
Scotland coming in a little bit late with this, but better late than never. They are just discussing amendments and what to do with civil partnerships; whether or not to extend them to all couples or abolish them entirely.
It broadly updates marriage law in Scotland, such as allowing transgender people to stay married when changing gender, rather than having to get divorced and married again.
Also recognises belief ceremonies such as humanist ceremonies as equal to religious ceremonies if they are accepted by the registrar.
Update
It's passed 105-18
Chalk one up for progressive thinking, but I can't say I'm surprised that the Church is still opposed.
I didn't catch this guy's name but an opponent of the bill is currently speaking and he admitted he was in the minority and praised the quality of the debate that's taken place
edit: Alex Johnstone apparently

The Scottish parliament is usually very civil and reasoned.
Notice as well how people stop when someone wants to interject.
It's what a parliament looks like when it actually debates the nuances of each sides opinions, rather than screaming general opinions to attempt to batter the opposition into submission while jeering at each other.

I wonder if the seating arrangements play into this at all

House of Commons is like two mobs packed together facing each other, Scottish Parliament is a circle with big-ass desks and tons of space
It is actually specifically designed to encourage consensus between parties and mp's.
Pretty solid idea to create your room designed like an amphitheatre and less like a straight up gallery type deal.

Conscript Fathers, The Senate is now in Session.
And it just passed now.
Same-sex marriage will come into law this year in Scotland.
Good job Scotland, but of course the Church will oppose it. Also, I dig the way the Scottish Parliament is set up.

Looks good on the inside, but man the outside is actually so dire it hurts.

Oh my god that's hideous
now watch as the rest of the roof beams in the debate chamber collapse and people treat it as an act of vengeance from god
I've never understood in the first place why gay marriage is looked down on and banned in a lot of places. All I could think is "So... It's illegal to fall in love, now?"
If you go to visit it, you'll find that the scottish parliament looks like a tv studio on the inside.
It passed 105-18

Jesus, the architect that designed that has no concept of something being "too busy" or having clashing lines.

The actual architect dude died during it's design so they let his wife finish it.
Bad move in my opinion.
