A staff memo written by a couple of Tim Hortons franchise owners in Whitby, Ont., blames cuts to employee benefits on the Ontario government and its minimum wage hike.
The notice also suggests employees contact Premier Kathleen Wynne if they have concerns about the changes — and let her know she doesn't have their support.

"I encourage you to let her know how your workplace will change as a result of her new [minimum wage] law and that you will not vote Liberal in the coming Ontario election in June 2018"

The Holmans cut employee perks such as paid breaks and free hot drinks on the job, and reduced health benefit coverage, the employee said.
Workers at nearly a dozen Tim Hortons outlets across Ontario have told CBC News their owners have made similar cutbacks to offset the costs of the minimum wage hike.

'No comment' from owner

The individual also said the owners have informed employees the changes may only be temporary, depending on how the situation plays out.
I have heard of the cuts before, and was pretty much disgusted. These news aren't helping either.
Also here's a picture of the cuts.

Or how about get fucked
Jesus, that picture of the cuts....
Ah yes, the "IT'S THOSE DAMN LIBERALS" scapegoat, Jesus Christ I can't believe just how fucked this whole scenario is, this business is pretty much blackmailing the people working for them.
cutting your employees' day off pay even if they have a death in the family then blaming it on the liberals
glad to see canadian conservatives are just as caring and generous as american ones
Hmm, if the government mandates that you must increase your minimum wage, you have 3 potential degrees of freedom.
1) Charge the customers more (as they already regularly do here)
2) Take away worker benefits
3) Reduce payouts higher up
Of course they will do the first 2 and enrage as many people as possible when the third would be a better choice
Holy shit, you only get ONE sick day for SIX MONTHS of not calling in?
Maybe it's because I have a chronic illness but that sounds insane.
But it's all benign now, now there are no sick days at all. Disgusting.
Do your part as a Canadian and don't buy Tim Hortons anymore, Its all just frozen garbage, coffee sucks and they obviously don't care about there employees, go to fucking Starbucks McDonalds or even the fucking gas station if you want coffee.

Just cause I read it that way at first as well, the letter states that will continue, not be canceled

oh jesus, it was hard to tell amidst a sea of other cancellations
weird that they'd even point it out when it isnt a change

Probably cause its the only thing employees have left
They say to blame the liberals but the only blame I seem to be capable of allotting is to this massive franchised company that's completely capable of paying the original wages

It doesn't help that I have some Tim Hortons gift cards I wanted to eventually use. Maybe when this all blows over..

They already have the money that was spent on the gift card, may as well use it otherwise it'll just be counted as profit.

To be fair, Tim Hortons is franchised. Staff management/benefits are all handled by the individual locations owner. The majority of Tim Hortons locations treat their staff very well, with benefits and incentives and they provide great jobs with flexible hours for students. It's not fair to drag the businesses of hard-working people who do treat their staff well and do the best they can because of some other random person that they have literally no connection to.
If you're going to boycott Tim Hortons over this, at least boycott the ones that have cut employee benefits and incentives. Is your boycott really going to achieve much, though, aside from hurting the employees that you were doing this to help in the first place?
I won't argue that almost all of their product is brought in frozen, though. They just stick it into an oven for a few minutes. Source: Used to be a Baker at my local Tim Hortons.

Paid day off, not sick day. Still wild though.

You can't count on people to vote with their conscience instead of their mouths. Americans showed that with Chick-fil-a, and I doubt the average Canadian is much different.

But the burger coffee is gross and starbucks is overrated and expensive. Mcdicks doesn't even have that large of a coffee option.
Aside from other pretentious indie coffee joins, one of the only other options is robin's coffee and those places never sounded nice.
I just brew my own, but tims is a nice fallback

It would be nice if fixing wage minimums was accompanied by increasing the tax on higher brackets, as that tends to encourage businesses to invest in themselves and their employees rather than cut costs to increase the income of higher-ups.
A company worth $500 billion that pulls in $3 billion/year "regrets" to announce that a $1/hour increase in wages is...
One single day off for the death of an immediate family member.
Wow.

It's fucking disgusting. My girlfriends mum just died suddenly and without warning and she's had to spend a week in shock without processing whats going on. Luckily her employer gave her a couple weeks off. She seems fine, then it'll suddenly hit here. A day is by far not enough. Funeral is this Friday and them I'm sure it'll hit her again.
I know you guys like to knee jerk react and all, so I'll clarify in bold :)
The paid day off for death is not canceled.
The paid day off after not calling out for 6 months is canceled.
I've never even heard of having a paid break before.
Literally the only changes here is nothing fucking over employees, the benefits were just so the company would have an edge over other companies.
The company even offers dental AND health insurance. It's just not completely covered.
Sounds like a fucking awesome company to work for to be honest.
If you die you only get one day off.

Found the tim hortons franchisee
I've never seen such low standards.
I got a month's worth of vacation time from the place I work. I've only worked there 6 months.
Then count yourself lucky.
I'd be ecstatic to get half the benefits they are now getting.
Out of cheapskate dirt bag moves this is shitty but not apocalypticly shitty.

This is a franchise owner, not the company.

Wow, one single fucking day off for the death of an immediate family member. This means that if your best friend were to die, you would get 0 days off, and if your wife died you would get one day off.
Are you fucking kidding me?

Do you work at a Timmie's? Or any other Ontario/Canadian food chain that only offers minimum wage? No? Then your point is kind of irrelevant, isn't it?
I think these particular franchisees are backward in their decision-making (and perhaps might even violate some terms with Tim Horton's themselves which might land 'em in hot water, but not like I've read their franchisee ToS or anything so idk), but it's an expected response to the wage increase. Some franchisees, and business owners in general, are bound to be emotional and political about the situation. It's just unfortunate that it's the low-level employees who suffer the most when that happens.
The wage minimum was increased to $14 up from $11.75, so no shit, businesses are going to have make some compromises to compensate for their losses. Compromise to preserve the business is completely fine with me, but the franchises like Tim's should be trickling down more of that compensation from their stupid-high financial reserves as opposed to local franchisees having to make cuts to stay above the bottom line. This isn't even factoring in the shittier employers either, who are more than happy cutting expenses regardless of lives ruined. Those are the employees getting fucked over the hardest, and I feel for them.
Overall, wage increase is nice as a minimim-wage worker in Ontario, but it comes with a few negatives for everyone else. Namely price hikes for most items and services. Not large ones, so it's still a hugely positive effect for the bottom line overall, but those who didn't receive a wage increase will have to pay a slight bit more for their usual shit. Not enough to have much to complain about though, honestly. They're probably doing just fine despite the extra 4 or 5 bucks on their grocery bill.
