Google has quietly expanded its list of censored search phrases with the addition of music streaming service Grooveshark. The piracy blacklist was introduced to curb copyright infringement and prevents popular keywords from appearing in Google’s Instant and Autocomplete services. On precisely what grounds Google decided to censor Grooveshark is unknown at this point.
There are certain words Google doesn’t want its users to see without explicitly searching for them.
thought Grooveshark was legal?
I feel bad for all the sharks that just got their afros and disco music.
now you have to type in the the whole word oh no
So it doesn't show up in autocomplete, why is this a big deal?
I just searched "grooves" and the first result was Grooveshark. Torrentfreak getting upset over something trivial again?

I even searched in safari which hasn't been logged into Google and is set for private browsing to see if the results would change. I searched for "grooves" and again Grooveshark is at the top. I swear Torrentfreak gets worked up over anything.
I never used grooveshark before and I got a chrome autocomplete(which is powered by google search) that had the website and the search term in it from just typing "groo". and the homepage auto complete brings it up perfectly fine. I think torrentfreak fucked up.

It's even better when I type in 'grooves' in the url bar in Chrome and it autocompletes to Grooveshark.com.
So yeah, it's Torrentfreak throwing a fit again.
thought Grooveshark was legal?
was banned on my ISP ages ago, like early '12 or something with "piracy" being the reason
To me it semt pretty legal though.

Doesn't it work by users uploading music for others to stream? It's basically a streaming limewire.
Never heard of Grooveshark before.
I just tried it. It doesn't show up until I have completely typed out Grooveshark.
Never heard of the site before, but I'm using it right now to stream some music I already have on my Ipod.

Is is possible the anti-autocomplete is a regional thing then?

I can't remember exactly how it works but once a song gets a ton of listens and its matched for copyright all the ad revenue from it goes to the publishers.
The thing about grooveshark is if it gets taken down another will go in its place.

I'm in Ontario, Canada. Here's what it looks like before and after I type the last letter.

Wow, didn't know about grooveshark.
Thanks for informing me google.
thought Grooveshark was legal?
It is.
Chrome doesn't seem to have a problem autofilling it. :v:

(I've never been to Grooveshark before, so it's actually suggesting it on its own.)

No it's more like Spotify but just allows user to upload music to expand the library. It sucks though cause none of the artists and albums are organized or standardized. There's tons of duplicates, songs with the wrong title, low quality tracks, etc.
MOG is waaaayyy better.
Welp, i guess we will be moving search engine if google wants to censor what we see even more than they already do with "customer based search results"
I'd love it if there was a way to completely disable the autocomplete filter so that I could finally see what people typically put after the word "fuck"
This is part of a growing list of reasons people should stop using Google. There are better non-proprietary services out there.
i can confirm grooveshark is no longer in autocomplete. chrome users: clear your cache and history, and if it is a bookmark then remove that too.
but google still returns it, just not on autocomplete.. i see no reason why we should switch from google.
having been a grooveshark user, it is easier to pirate songs there than anywhere else. it's one of those legal services that is flooded with illegal content.
I'm guessing it's the same reason Google removed Grooveshark from its web-store several years ago.
thought Grooveshark was legal?
Grooveshark plays music from artists without asking for any permissions or paying any royalties to them. Im not sure about popular music but that I at least know for independent artists.

Spotify has already taken grooveshark away
Doesn't it work by users uploading music for others to stream? It's basically a streaming limewire.
It's legal in the sense that watching/listening to music on YouTube is legal (uploading is a different matter)
Spotify has already taken grooveshark away
MOG is like Spotify but with a better interface, online streaming (no program install required) and a better mobile app (since the last time I used Spotify's).

Spotify free is shit
Spotify free is shit
It's not really. For the service you get it's actually pretty decent, high quality music, industry support and a good client
The ads are very repetitive, but at least they're not awful

how is a multi-platform browser proprietary?
and how can a search engine be proprietary?
or if you mean the literal sense of proprietary as in "owning something", how can there be a non-proprietary search engine?!
