How will this affect his flipping?
Here it is. Gates has agreed to a plea deal, as reported on earlier this week, and again this morning. He is pleading guilty to lesser crimes, and testifying against Manafort. Best case scenario for Manafort, this presents an overwhelming burden of evidence that will land him life in prison if he does not agree to a plea deal and offer, in turn, to testify against Trump. Worst case scenario for Manafort, Gates already knows everything he knows (which isn't unlikely, given that they were co-conspirators in every one of each others' crimes), and Manafort flipping isn't even needed -- meaning that a reduced sentence won't even be on the table for Manafort and he will face the rest of his life in prison regardless. His best plea deal in that scenario is simply trying to get life in prison with friendlier terms -- better facilities, communications, etc.

This is essentially a confirmation that he has already flipped. This document, per the tweet, can only be filed with the defendants' consent, and is thus a clear indication that he has agreed to a plea deal.
Refer to this thread for updates. Rick Gates has officially entered a guilty plea, and is now in active cooperation with Mueller's investigation.

Forgive me but all this is going by so quickly and I feel as if a recap is in order so... Who is Manafort, what has he done, Why is he important?

Paul Manafort was on the Trump campaign team for some months in 2016 and was campaign manager for several months. He was also secretly an unregistered lobbyist for the Russian-controlled Ukranian puppet regime prior to the Ukranian revolution and has a lot of dirty money being turned up all over the place, and of course that money went through attempted laundering and tax evasion along the way.
Basically, he was an undisclosed agent of the Kremlin at the time he interacted with the Trump campaign.
And a funny thing happened right around then: Trump insisted, and the GOP went along with, an edit to the GOP platform that struck out all mention of military support to independent Ukraine, which was fighting the Crimean invasion and annexation at the time.
If you have a theory that Trump colluded with Russia to swing the election in exchange for doing Russia favours, you would look for a lynchpin man who would be the bridge between the two conspiring parties. Well, in addition to Rick Gates, who just pled guilty and is cooperating with Mueller as an informant, let me introduce to you his co-conspirator Paul Manafort, lobbyist and alleged traitor to the United States of America.
