Michael Boatwright, an amnesia sufferer who now refers to himself as Johan Ek, during an interview at the Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, Calif.

One of the odder stories of the day is that of 61-year-old Michael Boatwright, "a Florida man who awoke speaking only Swedish, with no memory of his past, after he was found unconscious four months ago at a Southern California motel," as The Associated Press writes.
Now, The Desert Sun in Palm Springs reports it has located Boatwright's sister, Michelle Brewer, in Louisiana. She hadn't heard from him in years, Brewer said:
"He's always been just a wanderer. Then he'd come back when he needed some money or something from somebody. Then he'd take off again."
Boatwright's story broke last week, when the Desert Sun wrote that after he was brought to Desert Regional Medical Center:

He should go through Hypnosis to recover his past. I heard it's effective.
I knew it would be Florida man.

Don't you just hate it when that happens?

Hypnosis has been discredited by pretty much every scientific institution ever.

avatar is relevant
I'm just curious to how the fuck this happened.

repressed memory hypnosis has mainly because hypnotherapists plant memories without even knowing about it and the person in a trance feels it is real.
hypnotherapy for anxiety, depression, and substance abuse has an effectiveness that is higher than placebo effect though.
How is this even possible? Is his grammar coherent and such?

our brains compartmentalize different functions pretty well. someone can lose their memory of past events but still remember how to speak coherently, since those two things are handled by different parts of the brain. i wouldn't even doubt that he remembers stuff like any math he learned in school, even though he might not remember learning it.
our brain is a wonderful device and has a lot of great adaptations that make it possible for us to continue to function despite certain parts of the brain being damaged.
if you're asking how he lost his memory, the article mentions that it could have been brought upon by a traumatic event. if parts of his brain are not physically damaged, then that part of the brain might have just ceased to function temporarily due to some event that he might not have been able to cope with.

also i wouldn't rule out drug use. drugs can often cause memory loss and drug use is rampant among those who participate in a more transient lifestyle.

Unless he was fluent in Swedish before losing his memory, that doesn't explain how he woke up speaking Swedish. :v:

oh shit, you're right huh. i just assumed he spoke swedish as his first language and was in florida for some reason. the article mentions he took a trip to sweden so maybe he already knew the language, or another psychological illness ended up causing him to revert to speaking swedish based on what he had picked up passively.
people have gotten brain damage and ended up speaking in a completely different accent, so it's possible to fuck with the wiring in your brain that is responsible for speech and language.
The best part is that you can't even hear the guy talk in the video.

i would have liked to hear his accent
this article would be a lot less exciting if the man woke up in sweden instead of florida

i can't be arsed to do a bunch of research for you but that should give you a starting point to look at the effectiveness of hypnotherapy.

He knew Swedish previously, he didn't go to bed and wake up the following morning able to speak it and only it.

No, that shit is dangerous (memory delving, not hypnosis) and should not be practised. There is a greater risk of creating false memories and it might stir up even more confusion in the patient. Besides, he might not even be susceptible to hypnosis.
