You probably wouldn't believe it based on all the doom and gloom we hear regarding the Wii U, but Nintendo's stock has been steadily rising over the last few months. Its market capitalization (the total value of all its shares) has doubled to $18.4 billion, edging out Sony, which has dropped to $17.7 billion since last November. Nintendo, based in Japan, has been trying to make inroads with neighboring China for years, a move that paid off when its stock price rose by 11 percent after China lifted its 14-year console ban. The runaway success of the 3DS is also responsible, as well as investor rumors that Nintendo will shortly announce significant changes to its business model. Well then, I'm guessing Nintendo might be making a fair bit of revenue from a Chinese audience. Hopefully this means they won't be all rabid-wolf and quit their abuse of YouTube for the sake of additional revenue. Still, they're not out of the woods yet; Zelda U and Metroid U need to come out within the next coupla years for Nintendo to boost their Wii U sales. 3DS is doing great, but Wii U definitely had a rough start with the weaker launch lineup. Thankfully the growing library on Wii U combined with the lacklustre launch library on Xbone and PS4 has meant that Wii U is starting to get more ground.
How the hell does Nintendo keep doing this?
I'm surprised I never heard about this China ban on consoles before...
How the hell does Nintendo keep doing this?
People like their products
People like their products
The Wii U is a good console with good games too
How the hell does Nintendo keep doing this?
They are just a good company that makes good products.
Always bet on Reggie
I'm surprised I never heard about this China ban on consoles before...
It was the reason we hear about all of those Chinese F2P PC games and mobile games
iirc we will see the new Zelda game some time this year.
along with smash bros 4
Also that Zelda Dynasty Warriors game
The Wii U is a good console with good games too
shame it's nothing to do with that. it's just that people in china can now buy wiis and 3DSs 99% of the UK doesn't even know what a wiiu is
I'm surprised I never heard about this China ban on consoles before...
It's the very reason why the iQue exists. If it wasn't for that I wouldn't have known either :v:
Admittedly yes; Wii 2 would probably have been a better name. Either that or the adverts didn't reach enough people. Also here's hoping we at least see a trailer for Zelda U this year; probably around E3.
If the 3DS catches on in china, imagine all of those streetpass hits :v:
People like their products
I like their handhelds and I want one a lot, but the Wii U looks like a total failure
When asked by Mashable when we might hear more about Wii U’s original Zelda debut, Aonuma simply said, “I'll say more at E3 2014.”
http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/10/...ing-at-e3-2014
We're also working on a new Wii U Zelda game. Work on that is progressing fairly concretely. In fact, we were thinking about showing it here at E3 but decided to wait just a little bit longer before sharing it with everyone.
http://www.nintendolife.com/news/201..._this_years_e3

And then they botched it entirely by calling the Wii U an "upgrade" to the Wii. It's like they are intentionally choosing the worst possible words to try to communicate with people who aren't already avid game enthusiasts.
I'm surprised I never heard about this China ban on consoles before...
Like someone said above, China has it's own line of consoles called iQue which AFAIK is licensed by Nintendo. For example, this is an N64 in China: That's the whole thing, I believe the games are preloaded on the system, but I think more can be added via a slot in the bottom. All I know is that it's popular amongst speedrunners because it's officially licensed by Nintendo and the Chinese text is faster in most games. EDIT: Never mind, I guess it just comes preloaded with a selection of N64's most popular titles, either way it's definitely strange.

For instance, there's tons of identical microtransaction-fishing apps published to the apple and android mobile stores constantly. One I saw recently was a NES Mario first level clone thing, made with ripped pokemon sprites, where you have to buy characters for "$099" and new lives for $010". It's definitely dollars, not badly noted cents, and somehow it managed to pass apple's 'rigorous' quality standards that tend to wipe out small developers, in multiple formats, over and over as old copies got reported
the transliteration of the company's japanese name nintendou. The first (nin) can be translated as to "entrusted"; ten-dou means "heaven" In other words, Nintendo quite literally means "entrusted heaven".
How the hell does Nintendo keep doing this?
The "Nintendo" brand name and the fact that the 3DS absolutely killed this past Christmas. The Wii U is still struggling (and, speaking as a Wii U owner, with good reason) but with the right marketing pushes it could do quite well for itself in the next two years.
along with smash bros 4
I'd be surprised if a massive audience of people weren't holding out specifically til this released. It's the only new gen console I'm showing any interest in since the experience they provide with the unique hardware isn't tacked on optional features, it always seems integral to the interesting or quirky mechanics. Plus the games in general are far more exclusive and often vary from the majority of content on XB/PS, a lot of which you can get on PC anyways
I like their handhelds and I want one a lot, but the Wii U looks like a total failure
It's actually a great console. Only its sales are pretty bad.
