• Immortality sucks ( Afterlife too)

I've ben thinking about this a lot recently, and as there is no real forum for Religious Issues I thought I might as well post in GD. As you probably know, many Religions promise an Afterlife to its followers, the quality of which often depends on the subjects actions in this life. Many people have killed themselves or others, or both, in the belief that after deaththey will receive redemption or salvation, and live in peave forever with their lost ones and their lord. I won't go into detail on what specific afterlives look, as I don't want this to become a discussion about religion. Lets just assume that afterlife exists. Lets assume that, no matter which god you believe in, you will live forever after in your paradise. Sounds awesome? Not to me. If we look at what peace, pleasure and even perfection are on earth, we can clearly see that nothing is perfect, there is no peace, and little pleasure to be found compared to the pain many have to endure. But without sadness, there can be no happiness. For things to be outstanding or great, they have to differ from the norm, they have to be exceptional, an exception. Anything pleasuring will get normal if you do it long enough. Now imagine doing it for eternity. Forever. However your paradise may look, whatever marvelous greatness it contains, these things will become bland and boring within a fraction, a shard of the time you have them. Less then that. And boredom is very, very painfull, not physically but mentally. So who would desire eternal boredom? Some want to go the extra mile. Some want to live forever now, here, on this planet. Not only would you be bored. You would have to endure the painful things too. You'd see countless of your friends, and maybe children die. You'd become apart, avoiding contact with other humans to avoid amother loss, an inevitable loss. You'd become an outcast, lonely. You'd be fallen into madness after a few centuries at most. We can go even further with invincibility. Do you want to stand on this planet after the sun burned its surface and eradicated all life from it, trapped in a wasteland worse than anything fallout gives you? No. Thats my standpoint. Death is an end. An end is necessary. Discuss.(Oh and please ignore minor errors, typing this on an ipod is a pain)
I wouldn't want to live an afterlife, no matter what. Nor would I want to come back in any form, especially human.
Hell is a shit concept and I'd only want to live forever until it becomes pointless, like everything stops existing or I get really sad. Personally, I want a permanent end to life, just not in this millennium if I can choose. Also, heaven can never get boring, as it's a perfect place of happiness, so even if your happiness involves masochistic self mutilation, you'll still be filled with the pleasure of infinite simultaneous orgasms. (Or at least, this is what religion claims)
You're an idiot because the afterlife would trump the normal rules and therefore you could be eternally happy
He's not an idiot. Most people don't even bother to think about this stuff. He just didn't figure it out entirely, thus the thread.

I'd like it if everyone was immortal until they chose not to be. :h: Then everyone can die when they get bored.
Because we would all be having a fun time in whatever version of heaven your religion has after the universe has become a cold and lifeless shell in a couple of trillion years right?
How do you know that the afterlife sucks?

I watched "All Dogs Go To Heaven", too.
I would love to be immortal. Well, immortal in the sense of "controlling when I die" and otherwise being impervious to death :v:
The afterlife is going to get boring anyways. So does spending an eternity getting burned n' shit.
I watched "All Dogs Go To Heaven", too.
I didn't either.
If you were happy forever you couldn't say that immortality sucks.
You're saying you wouldn't want to live forever? :raise:
We can go even further with invincibility. Do you want to stand on this planet after the sun burned its surface and eradicated all life from it, trapped in a wasteland worse than anything fallout gives you? No.
Thanks for choosing for me...
No one knows for sure what would happen to one's mind/soul after death. Who knows if you will reincarnate, go to heaven or hell, or float around as an invisible ghost and whatnot.
You're saying you wouldn't want to live forever? :raise:
Exactly.
If I were condemned to an existence of eternal boredom I'd prefer it to death. I would be content with it.
When you're discussing things like perfection, immortality, omnipotence, you're already acknowledging that the rules that we're bound by in this universe no longer apply. Even logic arises from this universe and might not apply to things outside of it. There is no objective perfection in our world. Immortality can't be achieved, only extremely prolonged life. Omnipotence is logically impossible. Why do you assume that immortal beings can feel boredom? The lack of stimulus creates boredom in living things - probably ultimately due to some evolutionary reason I'm unaware of. An immortal soul might not have the capability of even receiving any stimulus, much less an evolutionary reason behind being able to experience boredom.
Why do you assume that immortal beings can feel boredom?
This.
So in an afterlife we'd all become gods?
I would love to be immortal. Well, immortal in the sense of "controlling when I die" and otherwise being impervious to death :v:
This. Imagine jumping off the burj dubai and living would be awesome
Do you want to stand on this planet after the sun burned its surface and eradicated all life from it, trapped in a wasteland worse than anything fallout gives you?
...yes only if the invincibility was like, "frozen in age" so I look 30 or something forever and ever and can't feel pain or anything of the sort.
I wrote one of my philosophy papers on this topic. I don't think anyone would want to live for an eternity. Forever is a long time. Shit wold become really repetitive and maddening. I would choose to live forever if I was able to end my life when I wanted to
Required Content http://www.cracked.com/article_18708_5-reasons-immortality-would-be-worse-than-death.html
That article's retarded
Everything can become pleasurable again if you just stop doing it for a while (like when you do no fap december), so if you wanted love and emotion to become important to you again you could live in solitude for some time and return and realise what you've missed. If you lived for an infinite amount of time there are an infinite amount of possible actions to take to use the time well. Think of everything you could learn, forget, relearn. As for pain, time heals all wounds and you'd have quite a fair bit of that to help with it.
What happens if in said afterlife, time no longer exists? I know, the idea seems unfathomable, but if that is the case, then how could one experience boredom, let alone take any sort of action that one can take with time present? I know the OP asked us not to discuss the details of the afterlife in different religions, but I think it's unwise to assume that if an afterlife exists that it will be a Jerry Falwell-style heaven with fast cars and hot women.
I believe after years of study and meditation we can achieve ascension. We become pure energy and live in a higher plane of existence after obtaining ascension.
I'd like it if everyone was immortal until they chose not to be. :h: Then everyone can die when they get bored.
Choosing to end your life out of boredom is the dumbest thing I have ever heard.
