NEW YORK - ENERGY drinks are hugely popular, but each one could be giving you more caffeine than a cup of coffee, a study said. In addition, that caffeine could combine with other ingredients in potentially risky ways, with the use of energy drinks with alcohol a particular concern. 'What we know is that a typical energy drink can have as much as a quarter cup of sugar, and more caffeine than a strong cup of coffee,' said John Higgins of the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, who led a study that appeared in this month's Mayo Clinic Proceedings. Caffeine content of energy drinks ranges from 70 to 200 mg per 16-oz serving. By comparison, an 8-oz cup of coffee can contain between 40 to 150 mg depending on how it's brewed. Even more of an issue is how ingredients often not mentioned on the labels - such as the herbal stimulant guarana, the amino acid taurine, and other herbs, minerals and vitamins - might interact with the caffeine, he told Reuters Health. The concern is how such interaction might affect heart rates, blood pressure and even mental states, especially when consumed in large amounts, with alcohol, or by athletes. Mr Higgins and colleagues reviewed medical literature on energy drinks and their ingredients between 1976 and 2010, only to find there has been little research into their impact.
I thought everyone knew this.
I thought everyone knew this.
Science and Media, stating the obvious since whenever.
Does the US lack some ridiculous degree of health regulation or something? In canada, all this shit is clearly marked on the can, hell, it's practically part of the design. Yeah, they're not healthy for you to drink multiple of in a day, also says this on the can. Are you americans lacking that much fucking health warnings? Do your companies get away with not marking anything?
How is this news? I mean really
They taste like shit and make you feel like shit. Why the fuck does anyone drink these?

People are just too stupid to read the can. [editline]2:09[/editline] And then they blame the companies for any damages.
They taste like shit and make you feel like shit. Why the fuck does anyone drink these?
Some of them are nice and they wake you up like nobody's business. Useful if you require energy you do not have.
They taste like shit and make you feel like shit. Why the fuck does anyone drink these?
They make you look "Cool" according to my coolmatron. (At least that is how I see it with the teen population at my school :|)
Never ever have I felt any ounce of energy after having an energy drink. Same with coffee. It has never woke me up. I do however love the taste of red bull. It's the only energy drink I ever drink. But I don't have it too often.
great for essays you put off till the last minute. I always keep a redline handy just in case
I drink like two Redbulls a day. lol i'm gonna die young
I must be in the minority that really gets woken up by these drinks, a lot more than coffee too.
I like a good monster every now and then, mainly for the taste.
People have died mixing redbull and alcohol... how is this not already known by like everyone?
They taste like shit and make you feel like shit. Why the fuck does anyone drink these?
I occasionally drink Monster, I think it's okay. That aside, they mean it with the <Only drink x cans a y>, cause evidently the limit on monster is 3 a day, and I so happened to not read that and went ahead and downed three within 2 hours. Needless to say I couldn't sleep all night. :pcgaming:
I can't believe this isn't common knowledge in the US, or at least I can't believe the harmful effects aren't advocated as much as here in Australia. I still like energy drink though. A can of Mother will help you through any day, but I also like Wicked as well.
Why you would drink them anyway is beyond me. Most energy drinks taste like battery acid and the ones that don't are loaded with sugar to hide the terrible taste.
People have died mixing redbull and alcohol... how is this not already known by like everyone?
People have died driving their cars way too fast, yet dickheads still insist on doing it. Stupidity can't be stopped, it's just part of human nature.
Alcohol + energy drinks make you feel like shit anyway.
I thought everyone knew this.

The concern is how such interaction might affect heart rates, blood pressure and even mental states
According to the article, nobody knows.
I want my grave to have "Death by caffeine overdose" written on it.
I drank a Rockstar once a few years ago to stay awake for a movie. I fell asleep like ten minutes after I drank it.
Some of them are nice and they wake you up like nobody's business. Useful if you require energy you do not have.
I've noticed that SLEEPING works better

When I say slept over, I mean he slept for about 12 hours and I lay there waiting for him to get the fuck up. Never touching that shit again (in those quantities).
People have died mixing redbull and alcohol... how is this not already known by like everyone?
Vodka and redbull taste pretty good IMO.
Irrc I only had 2 sips from red bulls and that's it. I don't recall ever drinking other energy drinks. I just knew from the start that shit wasn't good for you.
Energy drinks are so dangerous oOooOOOoo! Yet still people flood their systems with alcohol, sometimes energy drink and god damn alcohol. I can imagine some fucking dick parent not allowing their children to drink energy drink, while she/he smokes a package of cigarette a day.
I've noticed that SLEEPING works better
Sleep is for pussies, especially when you could be working on stuff instead :c00l:
Americans drink large amounts of the dangerous substances because they're fat and thus need 10+ cans to feel any effects.
