Written by government officials, the hypothetical speech was part of a secret exercise designed to prepare Britain for the threat of a possible World War Three, but was never broadcast.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-23518587
The script, which starts off by referring to the Queen's traditional Christmas address, reads: "The horrors of war could not have seemed more remote as my family and I shared our Christmas joy with the growing family of the Commonwealth. "Now, this madness of war is once more spreading through the world and our brave country must again prepare itself to survive against great odds. "I have never forgotten the sorrow and the pride I felt as my sister and I huddled around the nursery wireless set listening to my father's [George VI's] inspiring words on that fateful day in 1939 [at the start of the World War II]. "Not for a single moment did I imagine that this solemn and awful duty would one day fall to me. "But whatever terrors lie in wait for us all, the qualities that have helped to keep our freedom intact twice already during this sad century will once more be our strength." read the full article for the rest u idiot

read the full article for the rest u idiot
Hell of a way to end a speech.
god save the queen
It's pretty fucking spooky to me, to think this could have been a real speech that headed the start of the end.
I thought this was about the musician Queen.
united states vs soviet union would hardly we a world war 3, maybe half-world war 3
united states vs soviet union would hardly we a world war 3, maybe half-world war 3
except, you know, fucking nuclear missiles and shit. there's a reason it was called the cold war, because if it went hot, the entire earth would be fucked, what with mutually assured destruction and all that, and if the nukes didn't kill us, the fallout would.
united states vs soviet union would hardly we a world war 3, maybe half-world war 3
US + NATO (most of western Europe) vs Soviet Union (largest nation on the planet) and the Warsaw Pact countries (east-European countries). I'd say that qualifies as a world war.
united states vs soviet union would hardly we a world war 3, maybe half-world war 3
Uhh no, Pretty much most of the world was divided into western capitalist systems and eastern communist systems. It would have been a global clusterfuck with no real neutral parties.
I thought this was about the musician Queen.
that's because you don't understand the grammatical usage of the word "the" before a pronoun i'm surprised these kinds of posts are tolerated. they're usually irrelevant to the thread and its akin to posting without actually reading the article
united states vs soviet union would hardly we a world war 3, maybe half-world war 3
If it's nuclear, it's everyone's war.
united states vs soviet union would hardly we a world war 3, maybe half-world war 3
that'd be nice if we lived in a world where allies didn't exist and nuclear weapons affected only the country they're aimed at my damn automerge
that'd be nice if we lived in a world where allies didn't exist and nuclear weapons affected only the country they're aimed at my damn automerge
Why do you think allies are a bad thing?
united states vs soviet union would hardly we a world war 3, maybe half-world war 3
United States, United Kingdom, France, Canada, West Germany, Norway, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Turkey, Greece, Iceland vs USSR, East Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania. With the possible inclusion of Austria, Sweden, and Finland. And that's just Europe. You could have Iraq vs Kuwait, Korea, China on either side, a million conflicts in Africa...
Why do you think allies are a bad thing?
you misinterpreted my post it's a fallacy to believe that if a nuclear exchange began between the US and the USSR (or russia today) that none of their allies would follow suit. hence why i was describing Xmeagol's fantasy world where allies would be completely satiated with their fellow allies becoming nuclear wastelands
Why do you think allies are a bad thing?
In this case, an attack by one party on another is the same as attacking all of their allies. So Russia nuking the US will beget a retaliation by the entire NATO front, which will in turn provoke the countries of the Warsaw Pact, aka well shit you just started a world war.
tl;dr version: WE'RE FUCKED.
except, you know, fucking nuclear missiles and shit. there's a reason it was called the cold war, because if it went hot, the entire earth would be fucked, what with mutually assured destruction and all that, and if the nukes didn't kill us, the fallout would.
The term 'cold war' has nothing to do with nuclear weapons, or weapons of mass destruction. "A cold war or cold warfare is a state of conflict between nations that does not involve direct military action but is pursued primarily through economic and political actions, propaganda, acts of espionage or proxy wars waged by surrogates."
