BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) - According to authorities, a 19-year-old Marine from Ohio who had just graduated boot camp from Parris Island Friday morning later drowned off Hunting Island Beach around 4:45 p.m. The man was last seen swimming about 40 yards from the beach, just south of the lighthouse, according to Lady's Island St. Helena fire district spokesperson Lee Levesque. After losing sight of him, a family member called 911. "They decided to stay over for the weekend and enjoy the beach and they were out swimming and got caught in a rip current and it swept them all off their feet," said Col. Neil Baxley, Beaufort County Sheriff's Office. "They were struggling to get on their feet and the young man was unable to regain his balance before the rip current pulled him out and pulled him under." The body was recovered around 5:25 p.m. "It's tough on everyone," said Baxley. "A lot of us are former Marines ourselves and here's a young man who is willing to serve his country, volunteer to serve his country and the very first day he gets the opportunity to start that career, his life is shortened." Beaufort County sheriff's deputies are investigating.
This was kind of a scare, because one of my friends around the same age enlisted in the Corps, and was actually at Parris Island for training. I found out that it wasn't him, but it was still pretty scary. Oh yeah, source: http://www.wtoc.com/story/19487756/parris-island-marine-drowns-off-hunting-island-beach
Man.... My reaction was the same as the OP's. I feel so bad for the family.
It kind of scares me how quick your life can be ended by powerful currents. Makes me nervous to swim in the sea.
Don't tell Westboro or else
This is what happens when you get drilled into your head for 3 months that your indestructible and then decide to throw common sense out the window.

I guess they also didn't teach him how to deal with rip tides if he were to get caught in one at boot camp. But what the hell do I know I'm not trying to downplay the tragedy of the situation but there things here that could have prevented this that the Marine should have known. I supposed I'm just more judgmental because I understand the concept of ORM and I see how often Marines don't use it and get killed.
do you even understand what a marine is your beaches do not suffer from huge riptides, then.
i was under the impression that a marine was still human and could still panic
Looks like he wasn't very marine after all. [sp]I'm so sorry. Really, I feel bad for the family. This had got to be really rough for them. [/sp]
Don't tell Westboro or else
Luckily, Marines aren't referred to as soldiers.
I visited here. My Uncle lives not far (He lives around Savannah, Georgia) and we drove up there once. He says you generally here about at least 1 soldier drowning out there every year because the currents are too rough.
Same with me. One of my friend's BFs just graduated from Parris Island. Probably knew the kid.
My friend probably did too. I was afraid it may have been my friend at first, but I remembered that he is 18, not 19, and is from Virginia, not Ohio. Still, it may be an interesting conversation to have when he gets back. [editline]9th September 2012[/editline] By the way, according to one of the comments on one of the many copies of the article, the Marine's first name was "John".
Looks like someone failed swim qual 3.
