Version 1.0 of Pokemon Uranium was officially released on Wednesday. Good luck trying to find it from any official source, though—Nintendo has already successfully pushed for the game's removal. "After receiving more than 1,500,000 downloads of our game, we have been notified of multiple takedown notices from lawyers representing Nintendo of America. While we have not personally been contacted, it's clear what their wishes are, and we respect those wishes deeply. Therefore, we will no longer provide official download links for the game through our website," reads a statement from Pokemon Uranium's developers.
+9 years of hard work, gone. Shame. http://www.pcmag.com/news/346990/nintendo-takes-down-fan-made-pokemon-uranium-game Game in question:
i'm pretty sure they knew this was coming, regardless they have a finished game that could maybe be licensed somehow someday and the game exists in the internet now so good luck stopping that
Is it warez to even ask for a mirror link to the game
[del]Yes.[/del] Update:

Garry: my opinion, wait until the company complains to us
Do as you please.

Thanks to the internet, there are already a bunch of mirrors. I think people already saw this coming after the recent news with that Metroid fangame. Is it warez to even ask for a mirror link to the game
If the IP owner is nuking all traces off the face of the earth, yeah it's warez. Basically, if the link causes legal and/or ethical trouble for the forum owner (garry), it's not allowed.
I'm starting to believe more and more that fan games are wasted talent, at least when it comes to Nintendo that is no matter how good you are you will only live in the shadow of the original... unless you end up lucky like those sonic guys or other and get hired, or Blackmesa source
Yes.
it's not a ROMhack though
it's not a ROMhack though
even if it was you don't need to share the whole thing to share a romhack
i'm pretty sure they knew this was coming, regardless they have a finished game that could maybe be licensed somehow someday and the game exists in the internet now so good luck stopping that
Well the strange thing is, the game has 150 unique, non nintendo pokemon with their own unique moves JUST to avoid infringement.
Well the strange thing is, the game has 150 unique, non nintendo pokemon with their own unique moves JUST to avoid infringement.
Still uses the Pokemon name.

You can put in years of effort in an unpaid project that could be shut down at any moment. It's a very fine line that usually ends up with it all removed. You would probably be better off making an original game so that you wouldn't have to worry about a C&D.
Still uses the Pokemon name.
Which is why it's strange, why go through all that trouble to AVOID infringement just to still use the name and infrigne the IP anyway. I mean 150 NEW pokemon with movesets is ALOT of work.
Maybe this is just me looking for a glimmer of hope; is it weird that Nintendo has been taking things down AFTER full release? Maybe they are trying to protect their IP and still let fan games get out there. Probably not, but it just seems odd that they would not have heard of these projects till the full version gets released.

This got 1.5 million downloads, so of course they would shut something this prolific down. If it stayed under the radar, it would have gone undetected. But once news sites start picking it up is when it gets shut down.
Jesus, Nintendo's copyright lawyers are some of the most hardass people on the planet.
Yes.
But warez implies that this game cost money in the first place. Therefore it shouldn't be against forum rules to ask for a link.
Yes.
Then why did nobody care about the Metroid 2 Remake
Well, this game's trailer does pretty much say "SAVE THE WORLD FROM NUCLEAR DESTRUCTION," so that probably didn't help matters.
The pokedex for this game is surprisingly well done. The majority of the new pokemon fit right in, and the sprite work is great.
my favorite thing ever is C&D's being smacked down onto already finished and released fan games it sucks that continued development on such a game would be highly unlikely/ill-advised, but the fan game is already out there on mirrors everywhere. everyone who wants to be able to will still be able to download a copy and nintendo throwing the legal equivalent of a hissy fit did nothing but waste their own time. hopefully one day they'll stop this shit. ps. i know that because of laws and stuff they're legally obliged to do stuff like this, but i'll still forever disagree with it on a fundamental level.
Yes.
It wasn't warez for the metroid fangame, why the stance change? I don't think its possible to pirate something that doesnt actually exist otherwise.
It wasn't warez for the metroid fangame, why the stance change? I don't think its possible to pirate something that doesnt actually exist otherwise.
Easily explained: Want no mess whatsoever....
I love Nintendo, but this is the kind of shit that pisses me off.
They have to protect their copyrights or they lose them. It's that simple.
I love Nintendo, but this is the kind of shit that pisses me off.
Unfortunately they have to C&D these things, even if they have no problem with a project. If they don't defend their IP they can lose their rights to it.
They have to protect their copyrights or they lose them. It's that simple.
Do they actually lose copyright if they don't C&D fan games?
Fairly certain this should be fair use, as it's not making any money on the game.
Do they actually lose copyright if they don't C&D fan games?
nope, only trademarks.
Well the strange thing is, the game has 150 unique, non nintendo pokemon with their own unique moves JUST to avoid infringement.
That trailer in the OP showed some moves already in pokemon games (Wing Attack, Seismic Toss) and there was even a Gligar. I think the whole "oh they have to dmca the games because then they'll lose copyright' is bullshit because there are so many fangames from so many different franchises and I've never heard of any trademark or copyright being taken. Same thing should apply to fan music or remixes and I've never heard a peep about that or fanart.
Fairly certain this should be fair use, as it's not making any money on the game.
They were through Patreon
Fairly certain this should be fair use, as it's not making any money on the game.
The second you put Pokémon in your fangame's name it's trademark infringement. Even if you try to be sly and give it a name like Monsters Friends Battle Time but, let's say, everything about the gameplay or the logo is still pretty much Pokémon, the IP-holder in question can argue that your product deliberately contains similarities for the sake of misleading customers. And force you to cease distribution and/or alter all elements in question. Taking money for it or not, the system wasn't made with fangames in mind, and if they're being made aware of said fangames likely due to a boom in popularity like Pkmn: Uranium and Metroid 2, they're forced to take it down. It absolutely sucks, but that's how it is, and I'm certain Nintendo perfectly knows it as well.
