Scalebound, the much-hyped Platinum-developed action game that was previously scheduled for Xbox One and PC, is in trouble and may be cancelled, according to several sources.
We expect the official announcement shortly. When reached by Kotaku today, Microsoft sent over a brief statement: “We’ll have more to share on ‘Scalebound’ soon.”
From what we hear, Scalebound, an ambitious game directed by iconic Twitter blocker and Bayonetta director Hideki Kamiya, had been in development hell for a long time. Microsoft first announced the game nearly three years ago, during the Xbox press conference at E3 2014. It rose to the top of dozens of “Most Anticipated Games” lists but was delayed several times.
Meanwhile, Eurogamer is reporting from their sources that Microsoft and Platinum have indeed parted ways.
Multiple sources have confirmed to Eurogamer that Microsoft and developer Platinum Games have parted ways on the project, and that work concluded before the end of 2016.
This tallies with a just-published Kotaku report which states the game is currently in trouble, and possibly cancelled.
Scalebound was last seen in public back at Gamescom 2016 in August. Since then, the relationship between Microsoft and Osaka-based developer Platinum Games dramatically soured.
Work on the game took a serious knock last autumn, Eurogamer sources say, when several senior members of the development team were forced to take a month away from the pressure of the project's heavy workload.
These project members then returned, but Scalebound was now behind schedule. With continuing issues surrounding the game's engine and overdue deadlines, the decision was made that the project could no longer continue.
Is it me or do (as of now considering this game's possible cancellation) the Xbox One's exclusive really pale in contrast to the PS4's?
That's a shame. Scalebound is the only game to make me consider an xbox one.
Wouldn't it be crazy if after all this time of Hideki Kamiya bashing Keiji Inafune for Mighty No. 9, that his game doesn't even make it to launch? Crazy.

Well that would explain Phil Spencer's tweet recently about game exclusivity being bullshit.

sad if true :(

Why have I not heard of this game until now?
Why have I not heard of this game until now?
Because from media that was released it looked very meh.
iirc it was announced like 3 yrs ago. After that I don't think anybody even heard anythign about it until now.
that's a shame. seems like platinum's A team is going to be taking a break as well

I'm pretty sure they're still working on Nier Automata.
Looked fucking neat, but I wasn't a fan of the exclusivity.
game looks uninspired and boring not surprised it got canned.
all I can remember about it was how it was a complete slideshow when they first showed off gameplay
it's official

Mno9 doesn't count because they didn't release a full product so

They're snuffing exclusivity too
if you have a ps4 or PC there is only 1 reason to get an xbone and that's to shelf it for display reasons.
Well, at least to me it didn't look that fascinating nor original
I'm pretty sure they're still working on Nier Automata.
iirc it's their B team that's working on automata
which is kinda sad because from what i've seen of the demo nier is shaping up to be an amazing game while i've been unimpressed by pretty much everything they released for scalebound
Well heres hoping Nier Automata sells well, otherwise it might be the last Platinum game we get to play.
it's official

So how (price/worth)less are all those pieces of merchandise now?

Imagine never being able to play the game that's printed on your controller.
Not much to say about Scalebound but if it's true that Kamiya has problems, that's awful, he's one of my favorite devs. :(
I imagine Kamiya to be someone who doesn't take breaks ever. He's probably very close to a breakdown.
I really hope he gets better.
It's been so long since this game was first announced and shown off that I seriously thought it was already released.
It's sad to hear, especially since it's Platinum Games, but like everyone else said the game just looked really 'meh'.
I was really looking forward to it since Kamiya hasn't let me down.

Oddly enough that was only at the main presentation. The boothes had smoother gameplay
Wouldn't it be crazy if after all this time of Hideki Kamiya bashing Keiji Inafune for Mighty No. 9, that his game doesn't even make it to launch? Crazy.
I can't believe you're supporting Inafune
While the game didn't look stellar, seeing it be cancelled is a damn shame nonetheless.
I've got to wonder if this has something to do with Platinum's less consistent quality as of late?
Well that would explain Phil Spencer's tweet recently about game exclusivity being bullshit.
tbh I bet he wouldn't say that if the PS4 had lackuster exclusives and sold way less than the Xbox One as a result
Is it me or do (as of now considering this game's possible cancellation) the Xbox One's exclusive really pale in contrast to the PS4's?
they both feel nothing like their previous gen counterparts
Weren't they adding multiplayer to this?
they both feel nothing like their previous gen counterparts
I dunno man I feel like PS4 has some rocking exclusives
i bet crackdown 3 is next. they haven't said anything about it since 2015
