Hamid Karzai was responding to a New York Times report that alleged the CIA sent suitcases stuffed with cash to the president's office on a regular basis. It said tens of millions of dollars "came in secret" and cash was given on a vaster scale than previously thought. The president said the money was for projects such as helping the sick.
no zinger this time?
"secret payments" "used legitimately" I somehow can't see these two phrases working together.
Really CIA... really? At least he is admitting to it, though not to sure if "used legitimately can ever be proven."
I thought briefcases full of money were just a thing in movies
I thought briefcases full of money were just a thing in movies
hiding the truth in plain sight wake up sheeple
The president said the money was for projects such as helping the sick.
That seems doubtful. Sounds more like the CIA was buying his loyalty.
"secret payments" "used legitimately" I somehow can't see these two phrases working together.

the amounts were small

sent suitcases stuffed with cash
Unless Afghanistan is the new Zimbabwe, methinks not.
The CIA bribing dictators in developing states? Well shit, butter my buns and call me a biscuit, I would have never guessed.
Unless Afghanistan is the new Zimbabwe, methinks not.
A briefcase full of $100 bills typically holds $1-3 million at most. Ten million or so in a suitcase seems about right.
Not really surprising, the CIA has been paying and or helping people fighting the enemy of the day in Afghanistan for a few decades. Its only bitten them on the ass what, one time?
I thought briefcases full of money were just a thing in movies
Briefcases full of cash are real, James Bond/Jack Bauer/Jason Borne type characters are not, more likely functionally replaced by people with names like Ahmed or Ivan.
"Helping the sick"? I pray nobody is stupid enough to actually believe that. Karzai is a fucking dead man as soon as he doesn't have US soldiers, tanks, and helicopters to protect him.
Helping the sick? Last time I checked, the CIA wasn't a charity organization. Clearly that's not what the money was for.
Helping the sick? Last time I checked, the CIA wasn't a charity organization. Clearly that's not what the money was for.
You know we are talking about the Charitable Initiatives Association right
“The biggest source of corruption in Afghanistan,” one American official said, “was the United States.”
If it was for helping the sick then they wouldn't be able to make it UNsecret enough
In terms of maintaining US influence with this piece of shit Karzai, this is a good thing. I don't know why he would openly state this though.
And now he won't get any more because he couldn't keep shut. What am I saying, they still give Pakistan money even after all the shit they've done.
I thought briefcases full of money were just a thing in movies
That reminds me of that scene in Dodgeball where Goodman tries to bribe Peter with $100,000.
I hope someday we (Not specifically us, but our descendants) can live in a world where this is shocking instead of accepted.
I hope someday we (Not specifically us, but our descendants) can live in a world where this is shocking instead of accepted.
Who is accepting this?
“The biggest source of corruption in Afghanistan,” one American official said, “was the United States.”
Man, we have a bad habit of shooting ourselves in the foot while biting ourselves in the ass when it comes to Afghanistan. Every time we give someone there money or AA missiles they always use it against us in the end.

The reaction in this thread is fucking dumb, you dudes are so intent on being anti-government. Really the CIA gave money to a political figure they have interest in keeping propped up? REALLY? What the fuck do you guy think the CIA do? They do the same shit when funding rebel groups in small countries. So providing the ANA with tanks, rifles and training doesnt make you bat an eye, but some dude gets a few million in a briefcase (chump change to the US government) and you think theres something wrong? He's a US puppet more or less, for better, not worse.
The Karzai government is pro-US. He's a US puppet more or less, for better, not worse.
Puppet? He barely supports America at all.
Puppet? He barely supports America at all.
Publicly. Privately he's bought and paid for. It's necessary for Karzai to appear extremely anti-occupation, lest he literally be mobbed and executed as a collaborator to an invading army.
How the fuck is this being used against the US? The Karzai government is pro-US. He's a US puppet more or less, for better, not worse.
I wouldn't want my pro US puppets letting everyone know that our spooks have been giving them literal briefcases full of cash
Who is accepting this?
Accepting is the wrong word and I'm dumb for saying it. I meant we're not shocked by this, not just Karzai being corrupt but when we here of the CIA or whoever doing these kinds of things the world over. It's something we all recognize as wrong, yet it's something we've almost come to expect in many cases.
My friend, who will remain unnamed, works in the CIA and was friends with a few potheads, but hasn't smoked any himself. Just based on his character, before anyone brings it up, I doubt they're using it for drug money or anything super illegitimate. They do hair tests and shit to make sure nobody's doing the stuff. Plus you have to have a perfect record before they even consider hiring you, they don't hire criminals or anyone with psychological problems. Private defense contractors however do occasionally use cocaine and drugs because they aren't tested and they aren't government workers. He gets offended whenever people bring shit like this up. So naturally I don't. I've known a few other people in the CIA and they're good, usually conservative people. He's said himself that the CIA is full of conservatives, so that should say wonders in itself regarding what they do and do not do. Whenever people bring up Roswell or anything like that they laugh. The CIA is more about stopping terrorism than doing clandestine operations that will certainly garner negative publicity. There's no point in it.
