I'm a beginner to this sport and am trying to decide which Air Rifle to buy.
I live in the UK and have found a brand called SMK who make a wide range of AirGuns. However I'm having a tough time deciding which one to buy. I have a budget of anything up to about £170 (possibly even £200) but preferably less (around £100).
The ones that caught my eye are the "SMK Custom B2" and the "SMK XS" series such as the "XS12, XS17, XS19 and XS20".
Can anyone who has experience in this area recommend a well made and value for money beginner break barrel rifle, (primarily used for target practice though a high power would be appreciated) that would last a long time in good condition.
I would also be interested in buying a good value telescopic scope (about 4x32 or higher) costing no more than £30 or £40 tops. So if anyone has any further recommendations please let me know.
Thank you.

when you're a beginner, it doesn't really matter that much
Personally I like the Daisy Powerline series
They just work
Get a Gamo Big Cat 1200. I've had it for 4 months now, and it's an excellent gun. :jihad:
I'd say find a store that sells them or go to a shooting fair to try some out, it's amazing how better a rifle you feel comfortable with improves your shooting. I had an expensive one which was way too big for me (some German brand I can't think of right now) so I went to a gun fair and found one which was a nice size then bought it at a shop.
Ask on the forums of the shooting times or something, they seem to love it when young people take up shooting and will basically tell you the best thing to buy
Also Protip: DO NOT buy at a shooting fair they are so overpriced

Weihrauch? I have one of those.
get a fixed barrel one

Air rifle =/= Airsoft rifle
I made a thread about air rifles, and someone posted airsoft and I raged, butwhat ever.
I have a webley raider which is very good, but quite expensive, I would say start with a break barrel and spend around £180, do NOT get one of those £50 because they really are rubbish.
I would not recomend a C02 capsule one, because they are very expensive, and continue to be expensive after a while.
I would go with webley since that's why I'm used to, but I'm going to be bias aren't I?
If you don't want to buy more than one and want your starter one to be your forever-until-I-buy-a-new-one-one then go with a pre-charged rifle.

This helped me decide.
Funfact about Air rifles: the locks are 100% useless.
why the fuck everybody says to get a break barrel
I have a Remington Airmaster77, really decent air rifle for target practicing, and killing power for small rodents.
I am not allowed an air rifle in this house
Invest in a decent rifle rather than an SMK one, from what I hear they don't last well. I have a Parker-Hale Striker in .22 and it honestly can't be beaten if you want a break-barrel air-rifle, if accuracy is of massive importance I'd recommend an underlever though as anything with a fixed barrel is going to be inherently more accurate.

The striker is on there at £225, I got mine from Fultons Bisley for £300 with a scope and rifle case so shop around a little.

Webley make lovely rifles, always have! My Dad has his roughly 60 year old Webley Mark III in the garage and it still shoots remarkably well and very comfortably.

What're the UK law on air rifles? Are they legal, does the license cost?
Google just won't tell me :(
You don't need a license for air rifles but you have to be over 18 to buy them. If you're under 18 they're fine to use on private property so long as it isn't a hinderance unto anybody else.
get an AK57
It depends. Are you shooting targets, or your friends?
If it's the former, try and go with the Red Rider series (I know it's not and air gun, but they are cheap, and relatively powerful) if they sell them in the UK.
We used to have this high quality sport airgun from russia and a pistol too.
But I stopped shooting with them because they are so front heavy that it isn't much fun.
We still have a Hitler Jugent Kar 98 replica air-rifle from WW2 times, but we can't find any pellets that match the size.
My first air gun was this:

Daisy Powerline 880. Lasted a couple years... until the stock broke off. :raise:
Now I have this:

Crossman 2100B. It's awesome.
They aren't break barrel but they're great. Pumping makes you more manly anyway. :smug:

TBH, Air Rifles are weak, unless you're under legal age. If you're above legal age, get some real guns.
Something like the 30-06. That packs some kick!
Daisy is generally a good brand to choose though.
Wow! Thanks for all the help guys! I don't want to spend any more than £200 so a lot of the guns you've recommend are /just/ out my price range. But I'll defiantly look into Webley and Weihrauch. And yes AirGuns are legal to fire on private property in the UK, but you must be over 18 to buy them and ammunition.

he probably wants shooting as a hobby, not "shooting".

Correct. I've got an Air Pistol already (inherited from my granddad) and really enjoy simple target practice, however I do live near a lot of fields so small game hunting may be an option.
If you're a beginner, pretty much any spring air rifle will do. My friend bought his (a cheap SMK) for £30 and came with some shitty optics.
