Internet chatrooms can help those in distress, says study
Internet forums and chatrooms can have positive effects that should be more widely acknowledged, experts say.
The call comes after Oxford University researchers carried out an analysis of 14 different studies looking at how young people use the internet.
The review - published in the Plos One journal - said a number of studies had found a link between internet use and self-harm and suicide.
But it said others had found the internet could be a positive influence.
The dangers of internet use have received widespread coverage this year. In one case, in August, 14-year-old Hannah Smith from Leicestershire was found hanged after she had been sent abusive messages on a social networking site.
Since then research by the NSPCC has suggested a fifth of 11 to 16-year-olds have had negative experiences using the internet.
'Socially isolated'
The Oxford University research highlighted a number of dangers from internet use, including the normalising of self-harm and the risk of bullying.
It also said there was a "strong link" between internet forums and an increased risk of suicide in particular.
Our FP Chat is not the way to go if you are in need of help though
Big shock, talking to people helps you deal with stress.

Facepunch makes me feel that way sometimes.

On a serious note, if they're depressed and going somewhere to talk, and there's the increased risk of suicide due to being depressed, then surely the fact they're on the forum is not why they're committing suicide but because they're depressed, and therefore going on the forum to try and help it.
Surprised they found any sort of definitive link at all, setting how completely this depends on what websites people go to. It can always go both ways with the internet.

That seems most likely in most cases. However,

If they're spending all their time somewhere like /r9k/, it probably doesn't help a lot.
It's strange to think that without the internet, many who are a part of a fandom or subculture on-line would instead simply be a small part of a larger suicide statistic.
Sometimes the best person to talk to about a problem is one that you know nothing about, and knows nothing about you. It can really help knowing another person's point of view.
I imagine it's the same thing with people who go to the bar to drink, and complain about their life, and end up meeting strangers who give them advice etc

A tragedy, really.
Haha wow, i just said that.

If you'd go to a site looking for help and they ended up trolling you, you'd probably go off that site and find another where that isn't the case

going to a place looking for help with suicidal thoughts and having a bunch of people tell you to kill yourself can do major damage which may very well be irreparable, no matter if you leave the site or not.

that's why counselors exist. they are someone who doesn't have a personal pre-existing relationship to you that can listen to your problems in an objective, non-judgemental manner and help provide insights on how to solve those problems.

I actually find talking to people stressful.
I was on omegle once and there was a guy who said his younger sister had her finger up his asshole and wanted him to finger her and was asking for help!
Obviously not a troll so I helped him in guiding his sister's finger out of his ass.

What are you on about?
i've had depressive symptoms for five years, recently rediagnosed as type II bipolar, which runs in my heritage
i went on omegle randomly late one night and begin discussing the question "should i quit smoking weed?" with a stranger. i later learned she was a young indian woman about to move to the US for university who was curious about US people and culture and wanted to immerse herself through omegle. she wanted to know about my experiences with "depression." we talked for two hours and it was surprisingly cathartic
then my laptop's power died. it wasn't that i wanted to get into touch with her, but it was sort of sad knowing the conversation was over.

I'd imagine an inhospitable or insulting nature within the posts could actually exacerbate things.
I was ready to kill myself last December but an IRC I was apart of helped me do something constructive with my life.
I feel that it makes me feel worse sometimes.
Knowing that the people who you can actually talk to live too far away.
