Former prime minister Tony Abbott has said he was attacked by a same-sex marriage campaigner in Hobart. Mr Abbott was in Tasmania to attend a Young Liberal cocktail party this evening when the alleged incident occurred, the ABC understands. He told Fairfax radio he was headbutted by a campaigner wearing a Vote Yes badge after the man approached him, he thought to shake hands. Mr Abbott is in Tasmania campaigning for the no vote in the same-sex marriage postal survey. He said his injuries were minor, and that he had a "very slightly swollen lip". Mr Abbott said he was walking from the Mercury newspaper offices towards his hotel in the Docks area when he heard a man yell out, "Hey, Tony!" "I turned around, there was a chap wearing a Vote Yes badge, he says 'I wanna shake your hand', I went over to shake his hand and then he headbutted me," he said on radio. "He wasn't very good at it, I've got to say, but he did make contact. "The only damage was a very, very slightly swollen lip. "I was with a member of my staff, [who] briefly grappled with this guy and then he ran off swearing his head off, basically. "It was just a reminder of how ugly this debate is getting.
http://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2017-09-21/tony-abbott-headbutted-by-ssm-supporter-in-hobart/8970658
Seeing how Abbott's a dickhead the guy probably did him a favour
Abbott is a right cunt but I don't support hurting him. You just make his case stronger
Abbot might be an asshole but there's no need to headbutt the wanker.
Wouldn't want to get jizz stains on your own forehead, after all.
he's just trying to get it into his head probs
If you support marriage equality but you assault other people who have contrary opinions, or even if you support such violent people, you really need to reevaluate your understanding of tolerance. Yes, Abbott is a dickhead, but assaulting him is not doing a single favour for the vote yes campaign, while entrenching those who are leaning towards voting no.
We must never be tolerant of the intolerant.
Bullshit. You don't win people over to your side by ostracising them. That makes no sense.
We must never be tolerant of the intolerant.
Intolerance. Never tolerate intolerance: how we treat the people is a different matter.
Bullshit. You don't win people over to your side by ostracising them. That makes no sense.
These days you're not likely to win anyone to any side ever. By any means. Too hardheaded, pun unintended.

I just can't understand how those people can do things like that, and somehow think that it won't hurt the marriage equality cause. Speaking as someone who's already voted yes and returned their survey to the ABS, the amount of intolerance among those who preach for tolerance is just fucking staggering. [editline]22nd September 2017[/editline] It's especially bad because the amount of support for SSM is disappointingly low (only something like 60% support it), most of the support comes from younger votes, and younger voters are notorious for not voting when in non-compulsory elections. If SSM is to have a strong mandate, it needs at least 60% support in the survey.
Abbot might be an asshole but there's no need to headbutt the wanker.
But Abbot used to be a boxer and he was going to shirt front Mr.Putin, he practically said he could take it.

They then create a fantasy in their heads as to what "no" voters are, pick the very worst possible conclusions as to who they are and then decided that violence and harassment are acceptable against them. Ironically they're pretty much the exact opposite of dickheads from super rural Queensland who have never met an openly gay person in their life and have convinced themselves all gay people are child molesters and other rubbish.
Saw an interview with the guy that did it and he said it wasn't a yes campaign thing. Apparently he's just an anarchist and he tried to headbutt Abbott cos he hates what he represents and thought he wouldn't get a chance again If that's the case I'm confused as to why we are even conflating this guy with the yes campaign apart from the fact that he was wearing a tony badge

He said he was wearing the 'vote yes' thing because a 'friend' just so happened to have slapped it on him within half an hour of the incident. It's more likely that he thought he'd be recognised as a hero, but he only just came to realise how much harm his own action has done to the vote yes campaign, and he's trying to distance himself as much as possible from it. He's a dipshit anyways. Not just for assaulting someone, but he assaulted them (in his words) merely because he 'wouldn't get the chance again', and he's an anarchist too. [editline]23rd September 2017[/editline] And it's hard to not conflate assaulting the leading voice of the vote no campaign, with the issue of same-sex marriage. Especially when the perpetrator was wearing a vote yes badge.
