I'd recommend Boogie Nights and There Will Be Blood to get a taste of great writing and filmmaking.

I've only seen There Will Be Blood and Punch Drunk Love, I loved both of them.
There Will Be Blood is definitely the film of the decade, it's a classic. Also Punch Drunk Love is Adam Sandler's best film.

There Will Be Blood seemed extremely pretentious and just plain boring.
Punch Drunk Love and Boogie Nights were entertaining though.

it was neither pretentious nor boring, and it featured some of the best cinematography and acting in the history of cinema
i have no idea how people find it boring, shit was amazing
and incredibly heart breaking :[
