David Bowie’s list of collaborators reads like a cavalcade of pop-culture power brokers: Brian Eno, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, John Lennon and Queen. He also recorded with Arcade Fire, TV on the Radio and LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy.
Missing from that list? Fellow British act Coldplay, who once contacted Bowie in the hope of collaborating, only to be turned down by the music giant.
The band’s drummer, Will Champion, told NME they had invited Bowie to record vocals on one of their songs. Bowie replied, “It’s not a very good song, is it?” (Or as the singer, Chris Martin, once told the story: “He called me and said, ‘It’s not one of your best.’”)
The band appear to hold no grudges. Champion said: “He was very discerning – he wouldn’t just put his name to anything. I’ll give him credit for that!”
Ouch
Totally believable though, I haven't heard a new Coldplay song that doesn't sound like regurgitated shit for a long time
David Bowie was a legend.
tbh david bowie probably would be too weird for them.
sometimes you just can't put two together
Glad he turned them down, I for one can't stand coldplay.
good. I can't stand it when people get to a certain fame threshold and they're afraid to criticize anybody else's work for fear of being called an egotist or a snob. if more of coldplay's peers/influences were openly critical of their work they'd probably be a drastically better band today.
but that was bowie though. fearless up to his last breath.
This is my favourite Coldplay song

And to be honest it's one of the only ones I like. Besides only a few others, but damn.
Respect to both of them. To Bowie for his honesty and to Coldplay for not being bitches about it.

Their first two albums are pretty good.

To be honest Bowie songs aren't really that great either though.

He does have a lot of different sounds so would you like to elaborate? That's a pretty broad statement

honestly I love coldplays stuff. I haven't heard their newest work, but I enjoyed the angle mylo xyloto took

Honestly not a fair argument when people will just blindly go 'coldplay is bad' without considering the tonal differences between say rush of blood and x & y
I wonder which song it was? I recall their recent work hasn't been anything special.

I'd say it's a fair statement. Almost every Bowie album sounds different and has it's own unique style. You've got over 50 years worth of material. Coldplay has 20, and they haven't necessarily evolved like Bowie had.

As a huge Bowie fan this is some BS as well, I hate coldplay but there's definitely a difference across their albums too even to the point where I'll say I like a few of their early songs.
Not as big of a change as Bowie's music but it's still noticeable
Does someone really have to justify not liking something
he didn't say anything about not liking something. he literally said "bowie's songs aren't good". that's an objective statement. so yeah, you definitely need to justify it if you're just going to blurt that out.
personally I only like a small portion of Bowie's music, mostly because the bulk of his work was made during a time when music production was at an all time low standard as far as I'm concerned (late 70s to late 80s). it's impossible for me to like a lot of Bowie's stuff because that over-produced 80s sound is like nails on a chalkboard to me. that doesn't mean I can justify saying "all those songs are bad". there's a big difference between your fondness for something and your opinion of its inherent quality.
he didn't say anything about not liking something. he literally said "bowie's songs aren't good". that's an objective statement.
same thing. different way to say it. arguing about how someone said their opinion is dumb. take anybody's statement of something personal and immeasurable that way. jesus

using the actual definition of words is dumb, yet it's logical to criticize someone for requesting an explanation after someone comments "X is bad". alright rusty.

In college (and in higher level English classes at my old high school), they teach you to stop saying "I believe". Saying "I believe" can devalue your opinions and is also painfully redundant: we know that the opinion is coming from you. You wouldn't say "I believe" just like you wouldn't say "honestly" - is there a time where you're not being honest? In those instances, do you say, "dishonestly"? Everyone's going to assume that your subjective statements are your opinions and that you're being honest - drop the verbal fluff.
Your argument boils down to "that's just your opinion", which doesn't mean anything. Why does it matter? Of course it is - are your opinions in jeopardy because of it?
In college (and in higher level English classes at my old high school), they teach you to stop saying "I believe".
unless you went to The College of Talking About Music, this is very far from relevant to what I'm saying. it's not a debate about some kind of issue where you can weigh in with facts and statistics etc. it's a matter of someone making an objective statement and someone else conflating that statement with personal taste.
I don't know how you've come up with the idea that my argument has anything to do with "that's just your opinion man." the only argument I made is that there is a difference between disliking something and believing something is bad. one is an opinion, and one is a personal taste. the example I gave illustrates this perfectly so I'm kind of confused how that's slipping by. I dislike the sound of a large amount of david bowie's music, but I do not consider any of it to be bad or of poor quality. another good example is that I strongly dislike the entirety of Rush's discography, but I consider them to be one of the most innovative and talented bands in history. so, again, "I don't like this" and "this is bad" are two completely different things.
since this is a thread about Bowie saying to coldplay "this song you have is objectively not very good", and we're talking about someone commenting "well bowie's songs aren't good either", it doesn't really make sense that I should be told to assume "this is bad" is a miscommunication of "I don't like this". if that's what they were really trying to say then their comment was beyond worthless.

Nah, they taught me to be up front with my opinions. We specifically got marked down for ever using the word "I believe".
no need to argue
either your point was that bowie's music is bad or that somehow your lack of interest in his work has bearing on his objective assessment of coldplay. in either case it wasn't unreasonable for you to be asked to expand on what you said.
There's no such thing as objectively bad music, so taking a statement like "his music is bad" as being an objective statement isn't quite right.
I'm still very dissapointed that the NFL decided to have Coldplay headline the Superbowl, even after they signed Beyonce on.
i like coldplays music and i dont like david bowies
sue me
There's no such thing as objectively bad music
That's nonsense people say so their poor taste can't be criticized. Music has established rules and demonstrable theory that can be applied to the individual and then be objectively bad by those current standards -- that's just the complicated part. When it comes to the science of audio there's very clear lines between good music and bad music that can be drawn down to the mathematical.

It doesn't matter whether or not objectively bad music is a thing, it's rather poor form to criticize people over their subjective musical tastes.
Music Theory isn't the be all end all law of music you think it is anyway. It's simply a set of very good guidelines for producing something that most people would find acceptable. Someone liking something that falls out of those guidelines doesn't make their tastes "poor", just different from yours.
