Didn't expect that
What else did you expect
Feel bad for the guy though
And that's why you don't follow so fucking close to another car.
I really hope the driver of that car that stopped got some serious whiplash or got beaten up by the driver of the truck, thats just shitty.

The blue car just stops, in the fast lane..
Somebody in the comments linked this, apparently this scumbag decided to take a stab at insurance fraud. The damage was around 45k.

And this is why I'm buying a dashcam

That's exactly what he was trying to get, for injury compensation.
And that's why you don't follow so fucking close to another car.
Actually the guy filming was a good distance and managed to stop before rear-ending the blue car.
And that's why you don't follow so fucking close to another car.
And what does that have to do with the vehicle behind him not stopping? From the time they were slowing down, the vehicle that ran into them had 3-4 seconds of stopping time. That wasn't the fault of the dashcam driver.
They were probably not expecting a dead stop on a highway, which I really can't blame them for
Sorry but even if there's no video, how would the blue car explain stopping?
While it's not at all the tailgating of the cam car that caused the accident, wow he is close to the blue car. Looks like less than a second when they were going at full speed.
While it's not at all the tailgating of the cam car that caused the accident, wow he is close to the blue car. Looks like less than a second when they were going at full speed.
And yet he was able to come to a full and complete stop before the third vehicle rammed into him.

They could try to say they didn't stop.
They could try to say they didn't stop.
Right, and both the others are going to say yeah, he stopped.
And this is why I'm buying a dashcam
I got mine a couple months ago.
For peace of mind, it's pretty much the best ~$150 investment you can make.
Takes nice pictures too.

I'm guilty of this, it's so frustrating to be behind a car in the fast lane going slower than cars in the slow lane. He's lane hogging and it's illegal, so is tailgating but damn it gets me angry.

It's probably a good idea to bring your brain with you when you post.
Right, and both the others are going to say yeah, he stopped.
In most rear enders the car being rear ended has the final say, which is why dashcams are so useful.
If you rear end someone it's always your fault. You should be at such a distance that if the car in front were to emergency brake (say if a child ran into the road), that you can stop and not hit them. < Says the highway code, not my opinion "Only a fool breaks the two second rule" - watch the car in front pass a sign, if you pass the sign in less than two seconds, you're too close.

Two seconds is a little short, 3-4 is best imo.
The guy with the camera seems just fine, he was able to stop, might be just the camera's fault he seemed closer than he actually was. And with the time between him stopping and getting hit the guy behind him just wasn't paying attention.

No, it's not always your fault. There is such as thing as "failure to yield". If someone drives right out in front of you in such a way that hitting them can't be avoided, it is their fault for not yielding properly.
The guy stopped dead in the middle of the fast lane in order to commit insurance fraud. Stop trying to be edgy by blaming the guy with the dash cam.
Come on, that guy is way too close. Looks like he was getting up close as a way of saying, "get out of the fast lane and let me pass" If he had enough distance he could have come to a steadier stop giving the people behind him more chance to react.

People behind him had 2-3 seconds to react. Assuming their brakes are half decent, they had plenty of time to slow down and stop. They were probably just caught off guard like this guy was.

I'm not! read above, I admitted I tailgate too, I meant it was always your fault as far as the insurance company and the law is concerned, not blaming him at all!

I suppose, but look at the distance other cars on the road are keeping. I wouldn't dream of following that close, for all we know the bloke in the other car stopped because he was annoyed at how close the bloke with the cam was (albeit a completely stupid reason to stop)

Except he was clearly attempting insurance fraud according to the article where he lied to police about the incident.
Why are you people trying to justify this ass hole? Seriously. One day it will happen to you and you're going to be out 45k.

Do you drive?
I mean shit, the dashcam driver was able to stop in time, and safely, it took roughly 4-5 seconds, MORE than enough time for the driver behind him to see his brake lights and slow down too. Everyone but the dashcam driver is a dipshit in this situation.
Same Same Same

you guys can berate the guy in the blue car all you want, and he deserves it for committing fraud, sure. but it's still ridiculous that an accident was caused by this. if everyone were following the proper distance and paying attention, even on a highway, and even in the fast lane, everyone should have more than enough time to slow down and either stop or move around the stopped car.
[editline]24th May 2014[/editline]
how is this post even remotely dumb, it's true. the guy behind the driver in the video must not have been paying attention in the slightest because he still hit the dashcam guy going decently fast. how can you think its dumb to say that had everyone been paying attention and following far enough to stop that this could have been avoided?
[editline]24th May 2014[/editline]
to be clear, i was not at all criticizing the dashcam guy
i don't understand why people think my post is dumb. it's as though everyone has this mentality that they don't need to anticipate the possibility of strange things happening on the road because they think those things shouldn't happen. the fact is that things like that will happen to you and to drivers around you if you've been driving long enough, and people who don't drive in a way that allows them to anticipate and prevent possible accidents are much more likely to get into one. sure, you can follow close behind someone or text and drive without incident and gain confidence in your ability to do so because nothing strange happened while you were doing it, but the time someone does slam on their breaks in front of you and you run into the back of them will serve as a reminder that strange things happen on the road, and making the slightest attempt to pay attention and anticipate them will make things much better for you
