Apple's iPad and the iOS system running it dominate the market for tablet computers despite growing competition, according to Gartner. On Thursday, Amazon.com Inc. is expected to unveil a successor to its Kindle Fire tablet computer. Here are Gartner's figures for worldwide unit sales and market share for tablet computers in 2011 and projections for 2012. The figures are broken down by operating system. Android includes modified versions used in Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble Inc.'s Nook Tablet. Tablets based on Windows will come out later this year with the Oct. 26 release of Windows 8. The report came out before Research in Motion Ltd. announced yet-another delay in its new BlackBerry 10 operating system, which could affect sales for 2012. iOS (Apple Inc.'s iPad) — 40 million units, 66.6 percent share in 2011; projected 73 million units, 61.4 percent share in 2012 Android (Google Inc.) — 17.3 million units, 28.8 percent share in 2011; projected 37.9 million units, 31.9 percent share in 2012 Windows (Microsoft Corp.) — none in 2011; projected 4.9 million units, 4.1 percent share in 2012. QNX/BlackBerry (Research in Motion Ltd.) — 807,000 units, 1.3 percent share in 2011; projected 2.6 million units, 2.2 percent share in 2012. Other — 1.9 million units, 3.2 percent share in 2011; projected 510,000 units, 0.4 percent share in 2012. Source: Gartner Inc. Glad to see that Android Tablets are picking up, I just got one myself over the summer. It's rather nice. I contemplated getting an iPad, but it just didn't measure up to what I require in a tablet. On the other hand I also purchased an iPhone because it better fit my needs than an android phone. Glad to see that tablets are gaining more momentum though.

Android tablets are amazingly more useful to use then "iPad"s. Less restricting and developing for them is insanely easier.
Android tablets are amazingly more useful to use then "iPad"s. I do a good bit of work on it, so it's good that I can tailor it to my needs.
I love my Asus TF300 Overclocking this baby to 1.6ghz. Did I mention that it is Quad-core?
I want to get a google nexus so badly.
We use our Android tablet as a scan tool. :v: We looked. There's no iOS app that does what Torque Pro does.

It sure is nice having about double the battery life or an iPad, and having a detachable physical keyboard. Being able to plug into my 55" tv with full stereoscopic 3D, use my xbox 360 controller to play the very, very good looking free game that i got from the market. Sure is nice to be using my Transformer prime

I played around with the new TF700 at best buy and holy shit, most amazing looking (and preforming) tablet ever.
Doesn't the prime suffer from wifi issues? I played around with the new TF700 at best buy and holy shit, most amazing looking (and preforming) tablet ever.
AFAIK it has GPS issues, not wi-fi.

I still love it to bits, just wasn't anticipating how fast the market would go. That TF700 looks bloody amazing, even if the screen is slighly worse than the iPads, the battery life, keyboard and android were the factors that got me to get my transformer.

Sounds like it's time for Apple to sue Google. They've got a patent on "Electronic devices that people want to buy". This is a clear sign of an infringement.
I used to sell Chinese tablets, made a killing. They started off shitty thought but my last lot I sold was A-Class build, solid, fast and had a proper 4point touchscreen. [editline]6th September 2012[/editline] And it all started with this piece of crap.. Slow, terrible touch screen and the screen itself was blurry, but back then it was freaking amazing and it sold god damn well. Ended with this, Look at all those connectors Pretty sure my one had a Camera on it though, there's usually different builds of the same tablet.
interestingly enough, The Verge published this article about the end of Android tablets because of the rise of Windows 8 http://www.theverge.com/2012/9/4/3291249/the-end-of-android-tablets-google-amazon-kindle-fire-microsoft-windows-8 It raises some interesting points and I have to agree with them. All Android tablet OEMs are also Windows OEMs and they're all pumping out windows 8 tablets. The winning factor for windows 8 in the future is that all of these OEMs are already paying Microsoft for patent licenses that are in Android, so they'd much rather just go with windows that already has a huge installed base and tons of developers on board.
I can see why. I'm writing this from my nexus 7 right now woo
I've got a Motorola Xoom - it's not very pretty, it's not very light, but I'll be damned if Android just isn't a better OS for a tablet.
