• Some stuff I made in ceramics class (Including TF2 sentry and Gears of War grenade)

So I took a ceramics class last semester at my college and I hated it. Due to some problems, I was deregistered from my classes right before this semester started and couldn't get back into the classes I was previously registered for. I wasn't left with many options for classes to take so I was kind of stuck with taking ceramics 2. I was not happy about this at all, but I tried to make the best of it. I put even more effort into the class than before and actually really enjoyed it. Here's some of the stuff I made. For the first project, we had to pick a famous ceramic artist and try to base our work off of their style. I don't even remember who I chose, but I wanted to make a teapot, so here that is. For the next project, we had to make two lidded vessels, each with a different type of lid. These aren't too special looking, but they were hard as hell to make...when I made them I wasn't used to using the pottery wheel at all. The glaze job didn't come out too well, though...the glazes were kinda unpredictable (the one got all bubbly when it was fired and the other one ran.) And now for the cooler stuff. We had a bit more freedom with these projects. I made them all as birthday and Christmas presents for my boyfriend, since handmade presents are always more meaningful, right? :keke: Our third project was a carving and/or stamping project, meaning we could carve something into our piece, use stamps to put designs in the clay, or put a clay and water mixture over the whole piece and carve it off leaving a design behind. That's the method I chose. My boyfriend likes piggy banks and has two cats who he loves very much, so I made him a kind of cartoonish kitty bank that looks like his cats. My boyfriend and I like to play Xbox games together, and one of our favorites is Gears of War 2. He always really liked the grenades in the game and thought they had an awesome design, so I made him a life size grenade. This project was painted, instead of glazed, to get the brighter colors and better details. The handle type thing is wrapped with some thin fabric to make it look like the tape it's wrapped in in the game. And this is what I was basing it off of: With our final project, we were free to do whatever we wanted. We had four weeks to complete it, and the instructor wanted it to be our best. Team Fortress 2 is both me and my boyfriend's all-time favorite game, and, in fact, it's where we met each other. :v: So I wanted to make him something from that. I thought the first level sentry gun would be cool, since it's not too complicated, but would still be a challenge to make. And with that said, a challenge is what I got. This was SO HARD to make and get together. I had the whole top of it put together relatively easily, but everything from then on just got worse and worse. I worked for hours outside of class time making the middle part and attaching that, then making the legs and attaching those....then it all fell apart the day before I had to finish it. I was so pissed off and frustrated at that point, but the next day was better. I made the remaining parts and just decided to fire all the pieces separately instead of all in one piece so the clay would be stronger. After it was fired, I hot glued all the pieces together and - much to my surprise since it's heavy - it held pretty well. It's fragile, but pretty sturdy. I'm so happy with the way it turned out, here it is... Not surprisingly, nobody knew what it was. :v: But the instructor thought it looked cool. He thought the grenade was really impressive and actually wanted to put it in an art show. Going to give them to my boyfriend on Christmas, so I'm hoping he likes them just as much. They're all up on my DA if anyone uses it. http://fairlyodd1217.deviantart.com/
The sentry looks rather sloppy, not bad, but sloppy.
Fairly decent. I suppose ceramics are also fairly hard to work with.
The sentry looks rather sloppy, not bad, but sloppy.
Yeah, I was working on it over the course of three weeks and some parts of it got kinda banged up a bit over that time. The top of it cracked in some spots, and the amount of hot glue I had to use made it look pretty messy...but thanks. [editline]3rd December 2010[/editline]
Fairly decent. should've used armature or something for that sloppy sentry
should've used armature or something for that sloppy sentry
That probably would have given me a much better result, but I was pretty much just making everything up as I went along. I never really had an exact idea of what I wanted it to look like in my head since it was so complicated. I didn't know how much detail to go into, which parts of the sentry to do, which parts of the sentry to take out, etc. Maybe next time if I do such a complicated project I'll try it.
I actually really like what the glazes did on your pots. I thought it was done on purpose. The kitty is adorable. You're just really good. :3
The sentries legs looks so old-age, i like it.

Cool, I like the kitty cat and the sentry.
I love those lidded vessels, the glazing and all.

I absolutely heart the kitty bank!
I love the teapot, has a lovely design to it. I love it how the green circles goes well with the red. May well be the picture, but nonetheless looks cool. As for the Gears of War 2 grenade, well... that's just epic.
That stuff is so cool.

It wasn't even supposed to have the little spots on it, but the glaze bubbled in the kiln and left it like that. It looks even better in person, the picture doesn't really do it justice. The whole top half is shiny and the spots turn kinda goldish in the light.
