Oppressed by my own family because I think different - General

Hello DD users, I want to talk about something hard for me at the moment. It's been two years now I support marijuana legalisation, and I'm a frequent smoker. My family caught my grinder in my room and then talked to me, they pointed me as a huge addict (like someone who often uses heroin needles). Everyday they harass me, insult me with a lot of names like dopy, junkie, drugged, etc... I truly believe in marijuana, I believe this plant isn't bad at all and could help us to make so many things! But my family don't agree, they think I have a lot of chances to take hard drugs like cocain, meth or opiates or they think I can die of cannabis overdose... (They also believe everything on television... Fucking mainstream medias). I want this to stop. I want my family accept my opinions about cannabis and respect me. I tried to show them documentaries, reports from the Harvard University about marijuana or other scientific proofs, but they still not believe it... What the hell... Cannabis is one of my important values in my life. In my town I have made meetings with people to open the debate, actually we are going to make an exposure about the history of weed and the failure of prohibition. But I want to know my family agree with me about that, I cannot have a good mood with that problem... I don't want to force you, guys, to give me advices and shit about that mess. But if you do have nice ideas, why not? :)

All you can really do now is show them that cannabis isn't making you a terrible person. I know it's hard to not have the backing of your family, but at least you have those friends, as long as you have someone that supports you.

You can't expect them to change suddenly, allow them some time. If you're in school/have a job, work well and show your parents that you aren't some kind of failure. also your family are cunts

Next time they make a remark about you being a so-called "drug addict" or a "junkie" or whatever. Tell him how you feel. "I dont like you calling me these names, you are making me feel oppressed" or something along those lines. They should atleast respect that. Don't get angry or start yelling, as hard as it is, it will make you look even worse. What do you do? Do you have a job, go to school, or something? How old are you?

disrespect coming from family like that pisses me off. its one thing to be ignorant on a subject and refusing to change but to constantly put someone down for doing something you don't believe or understand fully is unjustifiable. its shit like this that falls under the category of unloving or uncaring parents. these are the parents that think throwing their kid out on the streets is justifiable if they are caught smoking. they almost want you to fulfil the stereotype in their head to prove to you drugs are bad; and they will do it at the cost of losing their own kin. unbefuckingleivable. stay strong dude and convince your neighborhood this is an issue worth debating, and maybe by creating a movement in your town you can prove to your parents that this is"druggie" is a motivated motherfucker who can smoke weed and make a huge impact on the community.

I had a job but I had to stop it because my bro made bullshit about my money, he said that when I got money I directly spend it on weed... It's not the case; I paid a dedicated server during 9 months (85 €/ months) to make a Gmod community (but it stopped today because you know... No more money). Also, I cannot invite friends at my home because my parents dont know them, they said they are all junkies (many smoke pot, but a lot of them don't smoke...). So my social life is a bit fucked, everytime I go back home my mum have to talk to me, where did I go, how much money I spent... And thanks you for your replies guys :). <3

It sounds like you've tried to get them to understand, yet if they don't want to budge, don't force them, it'll just cause a bad situation. Remember, just because they don't respect your opinions and views, doesn't mean you don't have to respect theirs.

I feel the same way as you man, last night I was trying to explain to my father and step mother that marijuana is an amazing plant and resource and basically my dad told me that all the weed smokers can laugh in hell for all he cares because he doesn't want to be their friend. Their ignorance makes me feel disgusted with them, I don't even want to go out with them anymore. Because of marijuana I became a better person, a better student, and a better artist. It helps me to finally sleep, and it helps with my spastic colitis. It sickenens and saddens me to the core that I don't have their support and it hurts more than I imagined it would.

If it's an option, stop smoking for a while. It might be bad, but if they have no evidence they might calm down. Otherwise, go live with someone else for a while.

Do any of your family members take legal drugs? If so you should discuss how you do not like it when one of them drinks and call them a alcoholic or drunkard.

I heard cannabis could help her as a pain reliever, I talked about it to her and she said that it's still bad even if it's medicinal. Also, she is a big smoker of cigarettes.
