THE fate of two Japanese hostages held by Islamic State militants remains unknown although unconfirmed reports on Twitter state they have been executed.
The militants had demanded $200 million in return for the lives of 47-year-old freelance journalist Kenji Goto Jogo and Haruna Yukawa, who had travelled to Syria to train with fighters.
The 72-hour time limit the militants had put on the ransom demand was due to expire at 2.50pm Tokyo time on Friday, CNN reported.
CNN also stated that an IS spokesman had told a Japanese broadcaster that the group would issue a statement “soon”, but no statement arrived.
Whelp. That's a bummer
What does ISIS have to gain from pissing off Japan?
More ire from the rest of the world.
Surprise, they didn't get $200 million in 72 hours.
Fucking delusional.
Not really a surprise, no way they're going to be given 200 million which they'd probably use to take more than 2 lives. Only thing that can be done is denying them the benefit of seeing it phase by laughing at them, while advising anyone else to stay away so this situation cannot happen again.

Its more of a power play thing. By setting that ransome they show that they are in complete control. Its a pathetic show of power but its about all they have.
I hope they now know Japan reserves the right to start military operations against them.
I cant imagine any outcome from pissing off every country except for complete obliteration of ISIS.
I think they're trying to see how far they can push the world before there's severe retaliation from all sides.
In good news Mosul is getting surrounded by Peshmerga and ISF forces so basically this is a big sign of desperation.
I wonder if Japan is going to send a small force if and when ever the US does?

The amount they were asking for ransom is an amount equal to that which Japan gave to Middle Eastern governments last year in aid. It suggests that ISIS is angered that Japan is aiding governments ISIS is at war with.

So if everyone breaks away from the united states in terms of politics they'll leave us all alone?
I wonder if Japan is going to send a small force if and when ever the US does?
Somehow I doubt they will let two deaths drag them into a conflict that they've so far had very little interest in.
Hell, they probably would have paid a reasonable ransom, given enough time.

Nope. You want to know why? Because you're from the Evil non-Islamic West. ISIS is an extremist minority of hyper-religious assholes. They don't care about nationality. They just want to kill people in the name of a religion they are actively perverting to control the populations of the territory they are marauding in.

First part, yes, second part no. It is unwise to pay ransom to terrorists, it just gives them incentive to repeat the action now that they know you'll pay up. The death of these two people, while a tragedy, was mostly unavoidable by any means other than a military rescue operation. Plus, it was likely that ISIS already killed them and was asking for ransom for dead men. They have before.
somewhere in ME strange automaton wiped some IS camp ...
Japan as usually denies any of their military outside Japan territory :)
Looks like we're gonna get to see Japan in action again. For the record, fighting Japan sounds fucking scary.
Japan is not going to intervene militarily

They had no intent to actually get money.
What does ISIS have to gain from pissing off Japan?
They're just pissing off more countries that could join in an bomb them even more pretty stupid. The united states should start sending in drones to bomb them too.

Are they even allowed to? I thought the SDF was bound by treaty not to go around doing things like that

Complete control over two Japanese tourists. What an incredible display of raw strength and power.

iirc, during the 2003 invasion, they were overseas but completely behind the lines as medics and engineers.
I dont even think these guys have a plan other than "fuck shit up"

They're trying to bait Western forces into putting boots on the ground so they can play up the noble martyr angle. This is also why they threatened the life of the Pope.
They're desperate for an enemy actually consisting of "infidels". Getting droned and sniped and having their asses kicked by the Kurds isn't exactly the glorious martyrdom they signed up for, I think.
it's better that they didn't get the money as fucked up as it is to say
2 people's lives ended, but at the price of that delusional group not being funded with more money to kill more people for no reason.
Also, one of the japanese journalist was sold out to ISIS by one of his guide.
What an asshole
