The Edmonton Public School Board says it will instruct principals to stop using an anti-abortion group to teach sex education in high schools.
Acting superintendent Lorne Parker says parents contacted the board to raise concerns after an Edmonton teen and her mother launched a complaint to the Alberta Human Rights Commission.
The complaint says the school district’s use of the Christian-based Pregnancy Care Centre to teach part of a core course infringed on their rights as non-Christians.
Well congrats to them!
Alberta, we joke about you being Texas of the North, but fucking it's not meant to be a goal. Send American Puritanical morals back to their origin, not here.
-snip, bad timing-
abstinence is hilarious
yes, marry to somebody without ever trying if they are compatible with you in one of the most important functions of the relationship
it's hilarious but replacing abstinence with "yeah make sure you know each others butt very well before you agree on marriage and having children" is THE way that would make the social aspect of marriage worth something again but no, the church has to shoot itself into leg with trying to upheld a construct that's completely dysfunctional since the time women are more than furniture
I heard about this a little while ago, I'm glad the school board has responded and decided to axe this particular version of the program.
Not all of Canada is like this thankfully. Here in Quebec, sex-ed is usually great and covers a very wide range of topics. You usually get a sort of intro at 10-12 years old or so, where they talk to you about puberty and both male and female bodies. Later, at about 14-16 you get the full package about sex, disease, what does/does not constitute rape, and even things like the fact that male circumcision is (in most cases) unnecessary, or average penis/breast sizes and just how little you really need to worry about it.

BC does everything but the last bit when I went through high school :v:
Groups who shoves pro-abstinence ideas down childrens throats are self centered scumbags.

Politically, urban Alberta is probably the most liberal of the prairie province cities. (But that's only because Saskatchewan is gerrymandered to hell and back)

the catholic church has barely anything to do with abstinence education today, its mostly the very powerful loony toons churches like the mormons and the fundimental christians that worm their way into the system to get this shit taught
doesn't help that they're teaching this stuff in highschool here when every kid is a horny little fuck by the 8th grade
