United Nations expresses concern that Dutch Christmas tradition of Father Christmas is racist and "infringes the human rights" of black people A row over the traditional Dutch Christmas custom of "Black Pete" has reached the UN as the international organisation's human rights body opens an investigation into whether the character is a "racist stereotype". Every December 5, Sinterklaas, the Dutch Father Christmas, who is white, brings presents for children helped by mischievous servants dressed as pageboys, wearing black make-up, curly wigs and with large, painted on red lips.
Basically this is the Dutch Christmas with presents being handed out by the 'Sint' and the black petes. And they say 'It should stop' because of human right violation and racist(note that almost NOBODY finds this racist, most black people say that it isn't racist to them). source: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/netherlands/10393916/Dutch-Black-Pete-Christmas-custom-may-be-racist-warns-UN.html
I can't believe how retarded the international community is about this whole affair. 1) They're black because of the soot from the chimneys that they climb down. (White hands/Red lips/Blue eyes aren't exactly traits commonly found among black people) 2) Even -IF- they were black, they get (and got) way better treatment compared to blacks in other parts of the world, at that time. In other words, get the sticks out of your asses, UN.
It's fun to watch clueless retards judge something. He's black because of the goddamn soot, not because they're black slaves. Fun fact: A similar tradition from Iran is considered "protected heritage".
Hell, if anything, even if Black Petes are supposed to represent people of color, their role helps create positive association with them in kids. I mean, there ain't no damn kid who's gonna hate somebody who gives them presents... The Netherlands is probably one of the most multi-cultural countries in the world, and this is part of that.
Blackface is pretty fucking racist but infringing on human rights? Really?
Blackface is pretty fucking racist but infringing on human rights? Really?
Coal miners must be racist to you as well.
Man, Sinterklaas just wouldn't be the same without zwarte piet.
Coal miners must be racist to you as well.
It would be one thing to just paint their face black, whatever, soot from the chimney. But big red lips and black curly hair ontop of that? Pretty racist.

lets just all enjoy a bit of cultural blackface guys its not racist its fun
Its probably because they look similar to 'blackface' skits done in america which came under fire during the civil rights movement of the 60s http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackface
absolutely nothing to do with him getting coal on himself whilst coming down a chimney btw: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zwarte_Piet#Origins
They look extremely creepy.

They're getting mad about this? So they just conveniently forget that this holiday has been around since the middle-ages or even earlier, but focus on something that Americans did a few decades ago?
Reminds me of how they changed the name of a finnish candy, because people thought it was racist. Roughly translated the candies were called "Niggers kisses". Now they are "Chocolate kisses". We also had a card game called "Black Pete", but now it's just "Pete Game". I think people are sometimes taking this racial stuff too far.
White people know better what offends black people.
??? the soot this is laughably stupid zwarte piet is a moor slave btw. read your own country's history from the times of the holy roman empire before you say something about soot. Their job is literally just to cry about things they can't change and send villager raping peacekeepers to unstable African countries.

If it's soot, why's his clothes all clean?
It's the U.N. dude. Their job is literally just to cry about things they can't change and send villager raping peacekeepers to unstable African countries.
fantastic understanding of the UN as a world institution. you sure come off as educated
everything's racism
If it's soot, why's his clothes all clean?
I remember my parents explaining in the way that they change clothes but are too busy to shower. This whole thing is pretty stupid anyway. People don't associate black pete with racist thoughts at all. They are meant to be the hard working helpers of Sinterklaas.
You're all missing the point, until I read the wikipedia article a moment ago I thought he was black from the chimney
that says more about you than zwarte piet...
And again, there's plenty black people that dont mind the blackfaces here, its only a minority.
which means absolutely nothing. since when have morality and ethical debates been based on what the majority deems correct?
What if a small group of reindeers or little people in the US say they're offended by santa's helpers? Your going to change it even though nothing is meant to be offensive about it?
if caribou want to start a conversation about reindeers then thats up to them
I think the UN should ask some Dutch POC if they find this racist, offensive or distasteful in any way. If they do, they can feel free to admonish and censure it, and the Dutch authorities should take the appropriate steps. White foreigners, I don't think, get a say on whether something from a different culture (and indeed something that is, apparently, so beloved by people who actually partake in that culture) is bad or not.

But the black petes aren't even treated as slaves, it's the same shit as Santa's elves except black.
elves arent real, black people are this shouldnt even have to be a post
But the black petes aren't even treated as slaves, it's the same shit as Santa's elves except black.
did you know santa and sinterklaas are the one and the same
We have both, so we don't consider them the same.
aw man i hope you get a 2x gift bonus
