Missile analyst: North Korea missle could possibly reach as far as LA, Chicago
North Korea tested an intercontinental ballistic missile Friday that appears to have the range to hit major US cities, experts say.
A combination of US, South Korean and Japanese analyses of the launch from Mupyong-ni, near North Korea's border with China, show the missile flew about 45 minutes, going 3,700 kilometers (2,300 miles) high and for a distance of 1,000 kilometers (621 miles).
If the missile were fired on a a flatter, standard trajectory, it would have major US cities like Los Angeles, Denver and Chicago well within its range, with possibly the ability to reach as far as New York City and Boston, according to David Wright, a missile expert at the Union of Concerned Scientists.
We going to have to go to war ain't we? We are just waiting for the North Koreans to advancr their tech and become bigger threats while also allowing the most brutal and evil regime in history to continue to exist.
North Korea would need to demonstrate working re-entry vehicles first. I understand the hypersonic fluid calculations and the materials science required is challenging.

Pretty much.
They could probably hit LA with a boulder, but a nuclear warhead (of which I don't think they've ever proven to haven an actual sufficiently miniaturised version of, even) is a lot more delicate thing.
Going to just remark that unbreakable dome idea again
lets make it invisible too and have it so that all missiles bounce off

You underestimate the power of a boulder.
So if NK fires a missile at the US they will be removed from the planet.

NK would never be dumb enough to launch anything at the US
NK would never be dumb enough to launch anything at the US
With how utterly dictatorial and fanatical their regime appears to be, I don't think you can rule out someone at the top launching a missile at the United States, one of it's allies, or hell any country in the world.

attacking the US or their allies would mean NK's utter destruction. I feel it's totally safe to rule out NK making "the first move"

North Korea isn't that stable. They're led by a power tripping dictator who seems to have no care for his people at all. You should never rule out the possibility of them attacking us, with how unstable they are, anything is possible.

you could have some type of transparent wall, so when kim jong throws a 60 pound nuke over it it doesn't fall on your head

If say there was a revolution in North Korea or some other event that would, in North Korea's leaders' minds, lead to its destruction, I am afraid that they would do something utterly mad.
EDIT: why the fuck did it put my flag dog as Ireland? I mean I am Irish but I'm in France right now. Facepunch you weird :V:

You could have written the same for the current USA, and you would not be wrong :v:

They're dangerous, but they're not stupid, and they're more rational than you seem to think. The best outcome for KJU's regime comes from using the threat of nukes as an insurance policy so that no one can interfere with them without risking nuclear retaliation or the destruction of South Korea. If North Korea attacked us first, they MIGHT get a nuke on US soil, but as they still can't hit DC, chances are America would be deeply wounded but eventually stabilize. NK, on the other hand, would be absolutely devastated. They stand to gain nothing and lose everything if they struck first.
I guarantee you the people in power in NK understand that this is the position they're in.

The leaders may not be stupid, but the further you go down the chain of command, the more fanatical and insane they'll get.
Okay this is kind of crazy but whats stopping US/Korea/Japan from going all MGS and doing some sort of stealth infiltration?
I dont mean like, send in a "seal team six" or anything.. I just mean this has been an issue for a really long time and we're all tech empires. Could we not figure out a way to use technology to remotely assassinate all the dictators/high military enemies and save civilians at the same time? Is it literally just because we dont wanna have to deal with helping them and having refugees after and so we're letting them chill as hostages?

Their military would still be able to operate even if you took out their top few ranks. They probably have some contingency plan to launch stuff at SK if that happens.
You underestimate the power of a boulder.
True that. Kinetic bombardment may seems like an emerging field, but it's so terrifyingly simple at its core.
If what they say about it going 3700km high is correct, that's just over 9 times the altitude of the international space station. Almost double the apogee of a 1960s Minuteman ICBM.
I find it funny every time there's a thread on North Korea having made some crazy advancement to their nuclear capabilities you always have those people in denial who go "Well they still have to do X right to get to the next step, good luck with that, it'll never happen!"
I swear three years from now we're going to see people saying "Well they only have the ability to wipe out HALF of the west coast. That's not even close to the threat the soviets used to pose."
It's only a matter of time before the cities you live in and your families would be under threat from North Korean warheads, the only way to stop this is a war now.

not that this isn't alarming but north korea is still rather low on the rankings compared to laos, china, the USSR, the ottmans, the japanese, the third reich, ect ect.
they do horrible shit to their people and have nuclear devices but they're not the most brutal and evil regime we've ever seen
the scary part is that I have zero confidence in the current admin and Washington's ability to actually do something that doesn't kick off a potential massive war in SEA

I guess I shouldve said the brutal and most fucked up CURRENTLY existing regime. The torture they do to their citizens in labor camps(that you can get sent to because a cousin who dont know said something funny about the government) are pretty fucking sick:
There are some videos on Youtube where escaped prisoners and a former guard give horrific details how badly prisoners are treated in those camps.
Prisoners are always kept on the the brink of starvation.
Forced [free] manual labor. A lot of products manufactured in those camps are sent to China where they are repackaged as "made in China" and exported to the west. This is one of those trades where China has a secret complicit role. I am not sure if this is still going with the current sanctions and the new change of the guard in China. China just sees this as "business" and does not question really where the goods come from, all the care is that there's money to be made.
Sexual abuse of female prisoners by the guards, including forced abortions in case they get pregnant.
Torture of prisoners, all prisoners are to report any violations. Those that do not report are tortured or killed.
Random executions of prisoners deemed unfit, or too ill to remain in the camp. Camp directors and guards just do this for show/sport and to demoralize the prisoners in the camp.
Prisoners are used in chemical and biological experiments where they are given samples of toxic gas and bioweapons and are made to suffer and die under extreme conditions whereas their results are recorded and reported by camp doctors.
Prisoners in those camps are put for three generations when minor offense have been caused to the regime. Sometimes kids are born in the camps and don't even know why they are in the camps, there have been a few escapees that told their stories, namely Shin Dong-hyuk (5/24). There is a good documentary from him on Youtube.
If there is a hell on earth, that's the closest to it.
edit: Someone was asking me how NKoreans are making money, here's how :
With regards to point #2 The goods that are of North Korean origin that are passed onto consumer that are labeled as "Made in China" is infinitely small. But you can be sure that those gulags are designed to make people work for free so that the regime can continue.
How do you think North Korea is even on the map. Their sources of revenue are :
Hard labor in the camps where goods are manufactured and shipped to China and sold off as "Made In China"
Arms sales.
Gambling casinos in Macau, Hong Kong and Japan (some of of the pachinko machines in Japan are owned and operated covertly by North Koreans and the profits are sent to NKorea)
Heroin. Why do you think some of the farmers are dying of starvation. They are being asked to grow poppies instead of regular crops.
Money counter-fitting. A lot of the $100 that are fake originate from North Korea.
Forced Labor in other countries. Check out North Korean Labor Camps - VICE NEWS : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awQDLoOnkdI
There is an actual industry and manufacturing that's ongoing and South Korea has done some investing in the North under the "Sunshine" policy. The Kaesong Special Industrial Zone is a place where South Korean factories are giving jobs to North Koreans. Again, this is part of an "aid" package http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaesong_Industrial_Region
Rich South Korean business men have given millions if not billions in aid to help North Korea, a lot of humanitarian aid that was supposed to get diverted to the people went to feed the army instead.
The list goes on.
So now you know how Kim Jong-un makes his money and that scumbag has ~3-4 billion in Luxemburg accounts.
I mean why, for the past 2-3 decades have the USA spent trillions disstabilzing middle eastern countries and claim they are doing it to spread democray and freedom yet turn an blind eye to someplace like North Korea who will soon actually get their nukes and become a huge threat to the world?
No excuses for this type of shit. Refugee crisis? So what? Thats nothing compared to keeping the regime in power for a few more decades and still have it collapse and dealing with refugees anyways.

Great source, BTW, supposed drawings of a supposed defector, should send troops right away. I wont claim if this is true or not, but there were several news stories and supposed executions done by NK that were proven wrong, so take all the info coming from there with a grain of salt.

Also most info comes via South Korea and even Wikipedia warns of that info, and the page lists several false news:
Media coverage of North Korea (officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea) is hampered by a lack of reliable information. There are a number of reasons for this. Media access to the country is severely restricted. A key for information about North Korea is the testimony of defectors, but defectors are not necessarily reliable. Much information about North Korea is filtered through South Korea, but the longstanding conflict between the two countries distorts the information that is received.
Oh silly me. I guess North Korea dont treat their prisioners badly. All those millions of people in those forced labor camps are actually having spa days and well fed. I mean without exclusive 4K CNN footage of the guards raping and torturing those prisioners it just doesnt happened lets forget about all the other countless descriptions of defectors of north korea because these one guy didnt brother smuggling an camera in his asshole while living in a labor camp runned by murderous sociopaths. I mean its not like all of humankind's history dealing with oppressive regimes and forced labor camps shows how brutal and how bad it could be or anything. I'm they get served lobsters by waiters in those labor camps that they got sent to for simply disobeying the government. Its not like the entire country isnt already going through stravation either.
I guess North Korea actually do treat their citizens well silly me thanks for showing me the truth :)

That's not a very good comparison, here they're going for a very short and very high shot. The US when building Minuteman 1 didn't have any need to launch very high shots as they had long-ranged missile test ranges.

NK can't even get a regular sized payload a decent distance - there's no way they're getting enough heat-shielded mass into orbit and accelerating it to the speeds necessary to do damage comparable to a nuke in the next 100 years
