Large Wildfire in South Central Alaska (44,000 Acres and counting)
Michelle Weston, a Type 2 incident spokesperson with the Alaska Division of Forestry, says the Funny River wildfire -- which rose from 10 acres to nearly 1,000 acres Monday, swelling to 20,000 acres Tuesday night -- has more than doubled to a total footprint of 44,423 acres.
“The reason it's grown so much is because we had trouble mapping it with the smoke, and also with the aircraft availability with visibility limits due to smoke,” Weston said. More than 100 people, including smoke jumpers from the Lower 48, are already fighting the fire. Weston says water bomber aircraft from Alberta, Canada will join the forces arrayed to fight the Funny River blaze on Thursday.
There are wildfires almost every year in Alaska but they are usually near Fairbanks and father north. I have friends and family that live in Kenai that are sending me photos they have taken and it is just surreal how dark and gloomy it looks there. I guess Alaska is getting jealous of California.

44,000 isn't really that bad for a forest fire, here's hoping that they can set a good perimeter and keep people safe regardless.

Most likely some campers.
Just a little update the fire has spread to over 67,000 acres.

these things are natural and bound to happen. Yeah it sucks but without them overpopulation occurs.

Yeah I have family in both Soldotna and Kenai, I hope they are able to keep it from crossing the road.
