So, I am currently planning on making a Star Wars fan film.
Things to avoid/things fan films usually get wrong?
Also, while I'm at it, what do you think of this jacket? I want to use it for the main character, who would be wearing that, brown pants, and black Han Solo-esque boots. Do you think it would fit in a Star Wars setting?

I would appreciate tips from other filmmakers, and if there is any type of prop or clothing you guys think would look good in the star wars universe, please tell me!
It'd be easier to give an opinion on the outift if I got a full picture of it, but I can see the jacket itself being used

That jacket, plus these types of pants and boots. Without the lines running down the side of the pants (Fun fact, those are called Corellian Bloodstripes)

Andddd didn't even attach the pic. Wow.

That jacket reminds me of Lukes when he is given the medal. I like it.
That's what caught my eye in the first place :downs:
Sooo, nobody has any input?
Well, my advice would be to put the pants over the boots. It just seems more natural
really? I personally have always preferred the boots over pants, it's more militaristic
Maybe, but if he's supposed to be a military guy, I'd get a different jacket. Something less, for lack of a better word, fluffy.
He's a smuggler-spacer type.
What's the point in the riding boots if they're hidden under pants though?
[editline]1st June 2014[/editline]
Also tucking the pants into the boots is better because you won't get snagged on anything
Well, boots affect movement, so I guess for the sake of realism, but if you're going to hide them I'd say just put on some loafers or something :v:
But if he's a smuggler, then I'd say keep the heavy jacket. I mean he needs to hide his shit somewhere, right?
OR, you could give him a trench coat and that'd give him automatic badass points. Trench coats make everything look badass

See
Ok, that shit is badass.
He's not really a full-time smuggler though, I want the main smuggler of the group to look even more smuggler-ish so I should put the trench coat on that guy.
The first part of the fan film he'll be trying to look inconspicuous though and the guys around him are thugs/scoundrels/smugglers so that's why I want him to have a smuggler outfit.

Things fan films do that piss me the fuck off:
- Write terrible, terrible dialogue
- Use terrible, terrible equipment
- Use actors who can't act
- Straight up copy characters from the thing they're a fan of, giving them a different name and clothes, and then passing it off as "an homage"
- Any original characters are dark, edgy, with no flaws whatsoever, are ~so cool~ and ~so unique~
- Try to write the story so that it's heavily implied that they contributed to the main storyline in a massive way. Like, if their characters didn't exist, then the whole original story would've fallen apart, or whatever.
- "Yeah, the main characters thought that this happened, but this is what REALLY happened!"
so yeah. don't do those things
I guess it is quite complicated to critique something you don't know a lot about.
I don't know if you have done anything of that kind before so I'm just going to assume you didn't.
Stuff that low budget movie makers often stumble upon:
- Lighting: If you can get multiple lights or bounce boards/white cardboard
- Shots that drag on for too long
- Cuts that confuse the viewer, speak 180° rule
- SOUND
* if you want to have an abandoned city and you can hear cars in the background its going to be shit
* if one actor has a loud clear voice and the other that is 3 meters away is barely picked up
* drastically changing soundscapes and background noise at the same location
- lame fist fights: if your actors can't Jet Li don't let them Jet Li. Put in some fast cuts and back the punches up with some nice sound.
- lame actions: actors running from explosions or dodging some flying debris that awkwardly try to do roll forwards. Hide that stuff with cuts. You don't have to do half your film if you are able to cut it so the audience thinks it has seen the other half.
- Storytelling, when at some point in the movie something happens or characters want to do something and they have to bring in extra dialogue that stretches out for too long just to explain why they do something.
- The director that tries to force something: If the super epic shot that you wanted doesn't work and it is neither within skill, budget or time possible to get that shot scrap it and work your way around it. It is a major immersion killer if stuff like that just stays in there.
- just for good measure: SOUND
Bonus: If you enter a new scene take an introduction shot so the audience knows where they are.
If that outfit is him disguised as a smuggler, then is he intentionally using Han's style?

No, those style boots are very popular in star wars, you'll see that type of stuff on everyone from imperial officers to thugs. The pants are just plain brown pants, which are just common attire, and tucked into the boots since those boots would essentially be worthless without them being in full view (What's the point of cool boots if you won't see them).

Unless I'm mistaken and you plan to wear that yellow jacket the entire movie

Don't forget the worst offender in all fan films
Shitty.
Blue.
Crushed.
Blown out.
Overly vignetted.
fucking awful color correction.
Also, you don't have to use shakycam like everyone else. I'm sure you have a tripod, and I'm damn sure everyone has a table.
Also, use practical effects as much as you can. Yeah, Blender is free and everyone finds themselves with a copy of After Effects one way or another, but those are touchup tools I think the best effects in fan films are the ones that go totally over the top oldschool. Like, the Fallout 3 fan film Nuka Break. In fact, even though the acting in that one was meh and some of the jokes had bretty bad timing, I'd call that the perfect fan film.

We're actually doing a fallout fan film too but have to get the star wars one out of the way first since a friend who has wanted to do this for 2 years is going off to college.
I'd like to do mostly practical effects but we'll really need funding.
or just lots of cardboard and painting skills
and paint, which yeah is expensive :x
