• Florida Facepunchers, speak out here, will you? I'm moving down in two to three years.

As the title says, I'm hoping to scrounge the money together to live in Florida for the rest of my life. I was born in Florida to a couple who are now married, old, and yet they remain working class; for one reason or another, when I was four, we moved up to New York permanently. Their future looks dim- retirement plans have been besieged by debts incurred via the American education system as well as my father's increasingly self-destructive economic behavior. I do live in relative comfort for the moment, but conditions are becoming a lot less cozy with each year that passes. More and more of my friends are dropping out of school, despite it being our senior year, and moving out of town, never to be heard from again. While this makes it worrying for me to actually move, I know it's something I have to do to escape New York's murderous tax rates and low quality of living. I despise the cold, though I walk around in shorts and a tee during the winter season, and there are a whopping zero and a half jobs here for people who aren't into hard manual labor at minimum wage with no benefits and long hours. Not even fast food is hiring for the Christmas season anymore, and tons of homes are getting foreclosed around here. My household is always wondering when our time will be. How. Not too sure yet. While a plane would be cheaper, I do need to bring all of my belongings, and I just can't see that happening. Namely, I've got firearms and ammunition (they're legal and registered, don't worry), the computer I'm typing on, and it's possible I'm going to bring one to three people with me. It would make more sense, thusly, to bring a car, and I think I can afford that without to much on the loss side of the chart. It's a great misfortune as well that I have no friends on the way down that would provide me any sort of help or hospitality should I run into them. Other than the company who got onboard when the trip started, if there are any to begin with, I would be alone and away from any sort of help. It's possible I won't have a phone during my trip, and hooking up a desktop computer to a motor vehicle isn't something we can do with today's technology (not to my knowledge, and I doubt it'll be affordable when it hits breakthrough status). Why. It's in my blood to love the warm weather, and I really do miss it. I have many fond memories of Miami Beach and great restaurants. Up here, it's all fast food or crappy, overpriced dog shit that you have to wait an hour for. But down in Florida, everybody's always smiling and people are generally more talkative in the south from my experience. I know some people down there that I've known for a long time and might end up staying with them for a little while or longer if they're okay with it. But I probably won't need this unless things get really bad, and I'm no mooch, so I try not to resort to this kind of thing often. Where. Still deciding. I want to be close to the beach, but I know the closer I'll go, the cost of living rises with the risk of hurricanes. I'm thinking Delray Beach, or maybe a little further south, but that's kinda expensive for my tastes. What I'm really hoping for is a cheap studio or a one bedroom at most that comes with the necessities- heating, water, electricity. I don't mean for this to be a "Find & Choose For Me," but it would really help me out if I had some ideas that keep me close to Delray Beach or Fort Lauderdale, cost under 700 dollars a month (I'll go up to 800), comes with the necessities, and maybe, if you're really feeling into helping me, is nearby at least one venue that's kinda classy. I used to live a few blocks from a Fat Tuesday somewhere in or around Fort Lauderdale and I loved it there. That's my idea of classy, to give you some perspective. Now, I haven't looked very much yet but it seems like getting under 700 a month could be a bit of a challenge. I have found two nice looking places in Delray, though, one for 850 and one for 750, both near Kings Point. This is about 10-30 (30 being really pessimistic) minutes from the Delray Beach area which is pretty damn acceptable. Go all out. Anything is possible for the right price. I don't know how much I'm going down there with, but I live lean, so as long as housing is cheap, it's sure that I can get by without having to worry about much. Things I am not concerned with include crime, unplanned pregnancies, and Adolf Hitler. They do not apply to me. Post about these topics if you so wish, but I don't know how you're going to get Hitler into a thread about Florida. I was discussing Florida once with a friend and the discussion ended with Hitler, so I'm not going to mention how we got to that, because then you guys will do it too. And no I am not Jewish. Concerning con artists which I've been told are a huge problem in Florida; I know one when I see one, and if I need something to laugh over for a few minutes and quick cash I've resorted to conning them into giving me their money instead. And as far as drugs go, I'm not a retard and know how to hide my assets, but I don't use drugs anyway because I don't have to and I have other things to spend money on. Things I am concerned with include cheapish living cost combined with a cleanly home that I'm not going to have to fork over money to clean up. As well as the other things I mentioned above. I do not want to be woken up by cockroaches carrying my refrigerator away. I'm a neat freak and I doubt I'll ever get railed by my landlord for being disrespectful to his/her property, so I'd like to think that I will not find all nine lives of a resident stray cat on the floor of my kitchen. So, go ahead, discuss the Sunshine State. How is Florida now? Where are some cheapish places to live where the neighborhood's easy to get into the mix of? Do you live somewhere with good local bands that have audiences come out to see them, or a venue that holds concerts often? Does your mom cook a good burger and can I visit you and have some on the weekends? For those of you who are on your own, especially. I was only down there for four years, all of which I was completely incompetent, and hardly remember, except for a very few fond, though vague, memories. So I don't really know the culture, and I only took one or two vacations which I don't remember well due to the American education system's deadening of my childhood's barebones memory (the government is killing you), and I'd really love to hear about some Florida right about now, if only to get my spirits up and motivate me to get back down there. I miss home.
Move to Kentucky. You'll be halfway down south and it's a nice place.
I hope you don't like your white christmasses you lucky bastard
Move to Florida. Live in your fridge. Seriously. On summer days we used to just leave the freezer open beside the bed.
I've been down to Florida once, I could bake cookies on the sidewalk, in January.
You shouldn't move to a place thinking like a tourist. Every time I hear someone from out of state discussing Miami they always assume it's one huge beach.
i would tell you but this snow is too big to see what im typing [editline]lol[/editline] Just moved to Gainesville from Buffalo, I quite like it. I haven't had any trouble with any sorts of bugs etc, but then again it is "winter". People are way more friendly down here, even though they do seem to be missing a lot of their teeth.
I'm having trouble believing you should even being making a decision like this. Your whole philosophy for moving is trivial, and sounds childish. I lived in a nice part of Florida (Spring Hills, better than most I guess) with a decent house, and I hated it. I had no breathing room with money, made even more imposing by the taxes and laws of the state. Life isn't all about having fun on the beaches or in clubs, there is more to think about.
You want to move to Florida because you lived there for a few years you probably can't remember much of, and are basing your entire idea on assumptions about what life is like there? Florida's not a nice place, and it sure as hell isn't better than New York for jobs- not when you're competing with the massive number of Mexican immigrants that comprise the bulk of the blue-collar workforce. Also:
When I was four, I was born in Florida
what
Move to Florida. Live in your fridge. Seriously. On summer days we used to just leave the freezer open beside the bed.
That would be quite pointless, because the thermal energy it transfers from the air inside it will immediately be transferred to the radiator on the back, back into the room (so you'd need to place your refrigerator in the doorstep/window or something like that). On top of that, the work needed to transfer this heat energy creates extra heat. In short: you'll raise the temperature even more...
Alligators are something to watch out for I hear Eat them if you get a chance, fried is about as good as it gets provided you've got a good restaurant
This place gets humid as fuck during the spring and fall. You will never be able to open your windows.
When I was four, I was born in Florida
Man, your mum must have hated carrying you around in her womb before you finally came out.
Move to Kentucky. You'll be halfway down south and it's a nice place.
Ehhh... I know a few people from there who desperately want to get out. Plus it's inland. I've lived along coastlines all my live and I don't really want to change that.
I hope you don't like your white christmasses you lucky bastard
I don't really, no. Getting my car to start in the morning for school is a bitch. Shoveling sidewalks nets some cash, sure, but I could be mowing lawns instead.
Move to Florida. I can become one of those Desperate Housewives types who eats ice cream by the cup while watching every season of Sex and the City all at once like it's the bible.
I've been down to Florida once, I could bake cookies on the sidewalk, in January.
Hot Hot Hot
You shouldn't move to a place thinking like a tourist. There's not much for me to consider when it comes to living places, given my lifestyle. And hey, I only mentioned Miami once, man. The actual beach I was on was South Beach. Not because I am basing my idea on assumptions (in fact I've made very few), but just because I want to get out and try somewhere new. New York isn't as conductive for young people and Florida has a better ground-up base in the line of work I plan on entering. Well, it is very hot throughout almost the entire year, like March-October, mid to upper 90s with high humidity. The beaches are nice, yes, but as summer gets on, even the water gets hot so you're just sitting there in miserably hot water, so try to get somewhere with a community pool or something. The drivers hear are also a little on the nutzo side. Since half the population is over 65, you will find yourself going 35 down a 60 road more often than not. However, the people are generally friendly, and the local seafood and such restaurants are totally awesome. But, like you said, if you're trying to get away from low temperatures, this is your place. Unfortunately, I live in Pinellas County near Tampa And don't really know about your prospective area.
If you come to Florida, do what you're doing and skip right past North Florida. I live in Gainesville and it's hickville 360 degrees around. Oh and I live 5 minutes from where the Dove Outreach church people have they're congregational center, we used to piss around (literally) on the property. [editline]5th December 2011[/editline] oh and the education system is total shit down here, if you're even thinking about school
Education is bad everywhere, really. I don't think I recall anybody in America that didn't have a hundred and one gripes with the system in High School. I might check out FSU, but my problem is I don't want to spend money on that (and don't believe in loans), I want to spend money furthering my career development plan and other such things. None of it involves secondary education. To the guy who said alligator is yum: I'm open for it. Love variety in my cuisine like I love anything, as long as it's cheap enough to enjoy myself without wallet diving.
I don't know about you guys, but when it was hot out, I would just swim in the pool or ocean or laze about in the shade. Staying in a house without AC on it hot day is a terrible idea. Even if the doors are open. You best find yourselves a community pool or something, if you don't got the shade. Though I lived in Maitland(Forgot how its spelted). Also, free tickets to Typhoon Lagoon. Any time. Or Disney World. Its cool to have cool neighbors.
Stay in New York.
I live in North Florida and it's rather peaceful over here. White Springs, to be exact. Sure, you can generalize all the people in this area as "hicks", but they're really nice people and the town is very beautiful. If you do move to Florida, I'd love to invite you to my father's Festival of Lights in Stephen Foster State Park. He works his ass off to put up over 4,000,000 lights around the trees and the carillon tower. It's absolutely beautiful.

I find them rather peaceful, and finally stepping out of the gas guzzler to get on with the event is always a really relieving thing.
If you plan to move to Florida, you will have a difficult time finding a good education for your kids. I attend what is supposedly one of the best schools in the state, yet could never even possibly measure up to the school I attended while I live in Illinois. Other than that, it is paradise. Good luck in your moving!
Things I am not concerned with include crime, unplanned pregnancies, and Adolf Hitler. They do not apply to me.
It's hard to keep other people from applying crime to you.
Do not come here. I live in Destin, near pensacola, One one side of the bay we have a airforce base which does weekly practice bombing, and on the other side we have the home of the blue angels. So theres constantly jets flying over shaking my place. The living costs are high, and all thats on the news is the stories of children burned by meth lab explosions. Go to wisconsin.

He came from there, so it makes sense. I know people who randomly up and moved to a place they've never been before and it turned out great, so I don't see the problem.
I live in Miami Lakes. Stay AWAY from Dade County. Roughest place right now. I suggest Palm Beach Gardens. Grandpappy used to live there.
You shouldn't move to a place thinking like a tourist. Every time I hear someone from out of state discussing Miami they always assume it's one huge beach.
Because Miami is famous for their beaches. We go to the one in Key Biscayne, very nice and full of sexy women. Anyway Miami is just described as a sweet town that feels like LA, but ends up being hell when you're car windows are smashed or your car is stolen down 886 in the gardens.

We are apparently the final generation of mortal humans, after all- but either way, thank you for the tip. I'll take it into consideration. Where do you live specifically that you claim is paradise? Might want to update my options.
I live in Miami Lakes. Stay AWAY from Dade County. Roughest place right now. I suggest Palm Beach Gardens. It's really not as hot as everyone is making it out to be, but it is VERY humid so make sure you can handle that kinda stuff. I'm from Miami (or rather I was but I still visit constantly) and some parts are nice, some parts aren't. The beaches are great but you get kinda bored of them once you live there, or at the very least they lose some of there pazazz. I'd suggest Tampa over Miami though. Oh and get used to Cubans. And spanish speaking people.
