SINGAPORE - Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Lawrence Wong has described the vandalism of the Cenotaph at Esplanade Park - a national monument - as "disrespectful and deplorable".
Fucking disrespectful bastards.
Hopefully they'll be able to follow the blood trail thanks to how edgy they are.
I don't even understand what it is.
"Democracy" What's that have to do with it?
Dumb punks who don't understand history.

I think they are saying that Democracy is dead?
can the vandals come back and add a cliff note or something explaining what this means.
I'm swinging by the Esplanade to watch Kraftwerk later, might go check out the memorial myself.
How impressively political. We're all swayed by this witty and insightful art.
Everytime I pass by there at close to midnight I always see a bunch of skater kids sitting around there. Darn kids.

Throw rocks at them next time
don't deface the memorial for the fucking veterans you soft tossers if you have a problem with WWI if anything then go criticize the people who willingly threw away the lives of hundreds of thousands of young men, not the young men themselves who had no say or real part in the matter.

absolute tossrags
Someone needs to put sulfer mustard in their house just to show what horrors these men went through
They'll find the culprit and cane his arse in gaol.
Wait, is it an unknown soldier tomb monument? Why would you do that to that kind of monument, thats like, the one that is closest to the people and furthest from the institutions.
Article says both WW1 and WW2
I didn't realize so many people on Facepunch lived in Singapore.
but remember guys vandalization of memorials is an artistic statement :downs:

Marry shian.
Also, what the hell is up with people defacing monuments to those soldiers that lost their lives in wars? It will only attract negative attention.

Any attention is good attention, for some.

This country got boring anyway. I'll pay you a visit if you want
I hope whoever fucking did this gets caught. Probably some retarded teenagers thinking they're so cool and anti-establishment.
I often find the fact that memorials like these refer to the dead as 'glorious' more offensive.
Its tragedy, not glory.

If I died in a war, I would want to be remembered a hero, not a sad death. I think that's what they're going for. Not glorify war but make those who died in their defense as heroes.

Both World Wars, although the First much moreso, were pretty much only heard of as 'glorious' at the time. The young men off to give their lives for King and Country, to go and fight for the Empire or for freedom or for whatever they thought it was they were fighting for - the dead are referred to as glorious because at the time, they had died gloriously, and not horribly, painfully and dishonourably as they actually did. It's nicer to think of them that way rather than in the agonisingly negative way.

"The rest of us who make heroes of our dead and shrines of our battlefields. We wear our widows’ weeds like nuns and perpetuate war by exalting its sacrifices. My brother died at Anzio – an everyday soldier’s death, no special heroism involved. They buried what pieces they found of him. But my mother insists he died a brave death and pretends to be very proud."

I think that is completely offensive to their memory if we only want to remember how bravely and cleanly they honourably died of dysentery, and completely ignore any reality of the suffering they went through.
Thats fucking sickening.
They already cleaned up the memorial guys. It was cleaned on Thursday

Also this has also had to do the the recent arrest of a Singaporean political cartoonist on Wednesday a while back. I'm not sure. To tell you the truth, our government is doing a shitty job at providing economic stability right now. What you see here is merely the tip of an ice berg.
Also might be related to the ultra heavy influx of immigrants that is squeezing the life out of Singapore, Just like how Norway and UK is suffering from immigration problem right now.
Still, I do not think defacing a monument a good way to spread such a political message. this is not Syria or Iraq. Those hooligans must know that
