(CNN) -- The U.S. Air Force is breaking out some of its heaviest hardware to send a message to North Korea. A Pentagon spokesman said Monday that B-52 bombers are making flights over South Korea as part of military exercises this month. "Despite challenges with fiscal constraints, training opportunities remain important to ensure U.S. and ROK (Republic of Korea) forces are battle-ready and trained to employ airpower to deter aggression, defend the Republic of Korea, and defeat any attack against the alliance," Pentagon spokesman George Little said Monday in a meeting with reporters at the Pentagon. Little said the eight-engine bombers first flew as part of the annual Foal Eagle training exercises on March 8 and were to fly again over South Korea on Tuesday.
http://www.cnn.com/2013/03/19/world/asia/korea-b-52s/index.html?hpt=hp_t2
Say that again when the B-52 launches Tomahawk cruise missiles tipped with 150kT nuclear warheads
No. Fill a B52 to the brim with explosives equivalent of a hand grenade. Plenty. Of. Dakka.
What's that thing in the middle
Looks like a rotary JSOW dispenser to me. Basically a cluster of air-to-surface cruise missiles.
Doesn't NK have an Air Force of soviet era jets?
No. Fill a B52 to the brim with explosives equivalent of a hand grenade. Plenty. Of. Dakka.
To put this dakka into perspective, let's compare the B-52's payload to a B-29; The B-29 Superfortress was the bomber of World War 2 in terms of raw destructive potential, being able to carry as many as 5,000 lbs of explosives conventionally with an upward ceiling of 20,000 pounds (this would require extensive modification of the plane, including a trade-off on fuel and removing all guns on the plane.) How does the B-52 compare? The most a B-52H has ever truly carried into a combat situation is 42,000 lbs during Operation ARC LIGHT, but the maximum projected weapons payload is 70,000 lbs.
To put this dakka into perspective,
And another perspective on Dakka. 2 M67 hand grenades weigh roughly a pound. If it's at 40k payload, that means there are 80 thousand explosives going off with each one having a fatality radius of 15ft. If layed end to end, that's a total of 1,200,000 FEET (Or 227 Miles) of explosives being rained down upon the North Koreans, essentially stretches the entire DMZ and then some. That's plenty of Dakka. And yes, I am that bored.
Yup, take a look.
i have a hard time believing they have over 1500 planes
i have a hard time believing they have over 1500 planes
Let alone 1500 healthy enough citizens to fly said planes.
-snip-
Doesn't NK have an Air Force of soviet era jets?
Soviet era is ~1920-1990,so it's far-fetched when you say "soviet era" B-52 is probably from that era as well People glorify American military too much
KILL THEM WITH MUSIC
Dude, I just... Fuck it.
Dude, I just... Fuck it.
Oh fuck you did Sorry
Is it wise to provoke them poke the koreans poke the koreans OH MY GOD THEY'RE COMING
Yes it is wise. North Korea is like the stupid kid who doesn't get it when he's made his point and everyone has stopped caring. If you don't tell him to shut the fuck up, he'll get worse.
Love shack, baby, love shack...
I wonder how many Koreans had flashbacks when they saw them flying overhead.
I wonder how many Koreans had flashbacks when they saw them flying overhead.
None, because the B-52 wasnt used in the Korean War. :v:
