The Obama administration is invoking an obscure legal privilege to avoid judicial scrutiny of its secret collection of the communications of potentially millions of Americans. Civil liberties lawyers trying to hold the administration to account through the courts for its surveillance of phone calls and emails of American citizens have been repeatedly stymied by the government's recourse to the "military and state secrets privilege". The precedent, rarely used but devastating in its legal impact, allows the government to claim that it cannot be submitted to judicial oversight because to do so it would have to compromise national security. "The administration is saying that even if they are violating the constitution or committing a federal crime no court can stop them because it would compromise national security. That's a very dangerous argument," said Ilann Maazel

Source: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jun/07/us-government-special-privilege-scrutiny-data The US government pretty much just declared itself above the law.
What's next? authorization of imprisoning would-be "terrorists" for life without any sort of trial? Oh, wait, they already did that. But seriously, they're probably going to start censoring the internet and recording phone conversations.
Why aren't more people mad?
watch the american people do absolutely nothing about it well they might bitch and moan but thats it
The US government is not above the law. Why aren't people rioting in the streets yet?
UGH, Obama has turned out to be worse than Bush in all things civil liberties.
Why aren't more people mad?
I'm really fucking pissed off about this, but nobody i know gives a shit about it. They all think it doesn't affect them in any way, nor will it ever.
I contacted every single representative I had. I hope everyone else is doing the same.
I got an idea that's not complicated, people can easily support, but getting the numbers would be the challenge. Overload Prism by getting large amounts of people to use keywords that it goes after, so it renders the program useless.
watch the american people do absolutely nothing about it well they might bitch and moan but thats it
Well tell me, what can we do.
Well tell me, what can we do.
Civil Disobedience is one thing. I know it's dumb but it's literally the only thing people can do until something really bad happens.
Well tell me, what can we do.
Agreed. The US government is thinking they're above the law, we can't do anything about this. Well, I know what I'm going to do. The US's population is going to decrease by one sooner or later. Moving is all I can do.
Prague seems lovely this time of year, I should head there now to save a spot for next summer. And the summer after that. And the one after that.
I'm really fucking pissed off about this, but nobody i know gives a shit about it. They all think it doesn't affect them in any way, nor will it ever.
Surprise they'd be right
Why aren't more people mad?
Biggest Looser is on tonight and I don't want to miss it. Also I completely forgot about it because I was too busy with the whole new Kardashian scandal to worry about this.
Surprise they'd be right
Your own government ignoring the Constitution doesn't affect you? Wow.
Moving is all I can do.
crossing the border breaches national security congratulations you're now a freedom-destroying terrorist traitor see you in Gitmo
crossing the border breaches national security congratulations you're now a freedom-destroying terrorist traitor see you in Gitmo
Let's see if they can touch me when I'm not a citizen nor in their borders.
From what I understand, this is exactly the same thing the government did last time it was criticized for violating the privacy of private citizens by spying on digital communications.
The US government is not above the law. Why aren't people rioting in the streets yet?
Because they are living to comfortably.
"The administration is saying that even if they are violating the constitution or committing a federal crime no court can stop them because it would compromise national security. That's a very dangerous argument," said Ilann Maazel
Insanity! The president has far too much power.
Seems like each day the US government is turning more and more authoritarian. It's sickening.
Because they are living to comfortably.
I know. We're too apathetic and lazy for our own good. The American stereotype is, for the most part, true. Of course, we really can't do shit about this other than whine and cry. The government is above us so they do what they want, sadly.

The only thing protesting will do is attract some police in military gear to hand out pepper spray and handcuffs.
The US government is not above the law. Why aren't people rioting in the streets yet?
Because the majority of us don't care enough to do anything about it. I don't like it, but I won't do anything about it, I have enough to bother me.
What could you honestly do? The only thing protesting will do is attract some police in military gear to hand out pepper spray and handcuffs.
herp derp they are all puppets of the evil obongo administration :downs: You're right though, we can't do anything about this. It's a sad state of affairs, but we really can't do anything about it. Why must we be so damn corrupt? :suicide:
Security seems to be the magic word for letting the government do whatever the fuck they want. Too bad we don't even gain any security and lose our rights instead.
The US government is not above the law. Why aren't people rioting in the streets yet?
we should be tbh
We're right because we have authority and we say so, right?
we should be tbh
Well you would get shot at and imprisoned. Than nothing would happen.
