Around 18:10 is when the event took place.

Even if you fucking hate someone, sabotaging their shit just proves how little value you'd bring to the conversation
What a mature, levelheaded response to discussion.
Am I missing something? Where is the sabotage? The timestamp you linked seemed pretty much unaffected to me.

A lady starts speaking at 20:00 and before she can make her point a herd of tumblrettes make their presence known and rip a few cables out before leaving the room.

Though I don't understand why they were offended so?
She stated a few facts on the average PHYSICAL differences that cannot be denied (height, muscle, who carries the baby).. And then "fuck the police" gets whooped out faster than they could make an angry post on their blog.
why does it seem like students never get punished for pulling this shit? I get that university is supposed to be more free and adult but I fail to see why so many colleges and universities tolerate this

Forward it about a minute or two in actually. I have the timestamp abit earlier so people could have the full context of what the activists got upset at.
Because universities and colleges encourage this shit. Don't try to change your opponents perspectives with facts and arguments, just scream and call them names. Thats how you win arguments now.

Generally universities do not broadcast disciplinary actions against students, faculty, or staff to protect people's privacy.
Plus, tracking down people that behave poorly takes time and resources. If you actually break shit or hurt someone you're probably going to get dealt with. If you're just a massive twat in public very little is going to be done unless you push shit so far to the limit that you become a PR problem.
It's far easier to let the public comment on the situation through university papers, forums, etc. etc. which has the added benefit of acting as a learning/teaching opportunity for everyone else.
What do you think an adequate punishment for something like this would even be? What do you think they or everyone else would learn from said punishment?

Could you elaborate on how universities and colleges encourage this? I feel like the issue is deeper rooted than that.
Purple hair, black jeans. Every time.

thanks for being super imprecise, it would've been a real shame if you'd have been completely clear on the points you were trying to make and had instead said one thing and then done the other. that would've been annoying. thanks for not doing that.

I wouldn't say a harsh punishment or anything like that. Like you said, it's an opportunity to provide learning or teaching. An adequate punishment should be something enough to get them to reconsider their behavior or dissuade them from interfering with such events. You're also right that it would probably be more effort than it's worth to actually issue a formal punishment over it, and I can't even think of a punishment that someone with that mindset would even be affected by in the first place lmao

Gee I dunno maybe watch the fucking video?

I think an adequate punishment is having to write up a 500 word paper on what exactly the argument you are de-platforming is.

That's not an unusual approach

yeah people say universities encourage it but i just think it's more-so the culture that they breed, i.e. a bunch of bored young adults talk about how the world ought to be. there are lots of dumb people at universities who don't know how to go about arguing, now that college is the new normal.
off the top of my head, i think a decent argument for smaller universities encouraging it is that many of the liberal, progressive classes are taught by individuals who have been nothing but academics. sometimes they are qualified and bring good points, but in other cases it could lead to more of an echo chamber effect. not that i've ever had a professor like that necessarily, just hypothesizing.
[editline]26th February 2018[/editline]
a lot of private universities also have 0 vested interest in their students 99% of the time. if it keeps the money coming, who gives a shit if they act dumb?

Sorry someone might have watched the full context of the segment? I literally did the exact opposite of what you accused me.
Unless you are suggesting that you have ADHD and you only want the part where people get mad instead of what led into it.
I suggest you calm down, skip ahead abit, and watch the clip so you don't get mad over a non-issue.

500 words is hilariously short.
500 words is hilariously short.
Getting someone to even attempt to reexamine the issue at all is in itself a small miracle, especially if they've publicly demonstrated that they're prone to rash decisions and poor judgement.
You can't make someone learn, even at a university :V
500 words is hilariously short.
Tiny steps, tiny steps...
You start with just 500 words and then slowly work your way up to a document that would be worthy of a C- in high school.
Immediately asking them for an essay of several pages with well thought arguments, facts, and correctly sourced reference material will probably cause them to hyperventilate and panic.
500 words is hilariously short.
True, but short essays of equal substance are often more difficult to write than 2000 words of trite garbage.

Dude if I tried this at my university I would most certainly be reprimanded

I don't think canada and the US are radically different in this regard

At my university, the teachers visibly have to tiptoe, and some are starting to make a point of the fact that some of the things discussed may seem offensive. This happened in my personality lecture, for example. It seems that some consciousness is entering into the system, but at the same time it seems that anyone trying to breach the subject is scared for their career and status. I frankly sympathize, and only recently mustered the courage to talk to my teachers now that I am in my final year, and, presumably, beyond the point where I'd be kicked out and denied graduation. I'm not saying that's what would have happened, but that is the fear that was induced in me, rational or not.

I'm sorry you feel that way but I think your fears are misplaced.
