We agreed earlier that we'll make a thread every time Google changes its logo. This time it's a bar code.
Apparently today is the day the barcode was invented, 57 years ago.
On October 7, 1952, inventors Norman Woodland and Bernard Silver were granted the first patent for their invention. In 1974, a scanner in a Marsh supermarket in Troy, Ohio, met the simple black-and-white striped bar code design tacked onto a 10-piece pack of Juicy fruit gum. Now, more than 10 billion bar codes are scanned in 25 industries and in places including airports, hospitals, and shipping centers, according to Motorola.
Here is the barcode:

What do you think? Can machines translate that bar code to read "Google"?
Facepunch, discuss.
I bet it reads "Google".
I bet it reads "if you had time to scan this, your life is truly boring."
Just kidding, says google. But then again, don't bar codes vary from store to store and mean different things?
I'd shit my pants laughing if it was Yahoo!.
Really? Holy shit, I never thought of that! :aaaaa:
Hehehe.
It could say something else though, someone will have to translate it :O
Hmm I think it says
llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

Then this must mean Google in a specific bar code series. It MUST.
maybe it means haha u noobs i trick u all
This is indeed the word "Google", represented in Code 128.
Go to this site, select Code 128 and type in Google, and you'll get the barcode.

You can read more about Code 128 here:

This barcode format is usually not used in retail stores, but in packing and shipping industries. Retail products use UPC, which maps to numbers that have store-specific meaning and cannot map alphabetic characters.
I used this and got this:

edit: damn ninja
That's what it means.

I tried it this morning and it didn't read it. :(
It does indeed translate to google, print it out and scan it. I dare you.
What else would it say hurr.
Barcode.
It's what will be tattooed on the backs of our necks when Google rules the world.
I just used the barcode scanner on the G1 and it knew it was plain text and read "Google", awesome.
I bet if you understood how to read barcodes at 1 store, you could get some stuff cheaper if you brought in your own barcode stickers

Yes and no. Price information is not encoded in the UPC. However, if you were to replace the sticker with that of another product, you could change the price, but you would also change the description. If the cashier wasn't a total zombie, they would do a double-take and then call for a price check.

No, when a barcode is scanned the register looks up that number on the computer, and that number is associated with a price. When there's a sale, you don't see staff running around sticking new barcodes on everything, do you?
Someone should get one of those scanner monster games and play the game as Google.

No, you'd either get a non-existent item (which shows up at the cashier), or another product (which also shows up at the cashier).
Good luck with that.

I mean if you got the barcode of a different (preferably similar) item and put a sticker of the barcode over your item's barcode, and the cashier was stupid enough not to notice, then you could get it cheaper.
So I guess Google is for sale now that it has a barcode.........I wonder how much they/it is/are worth? :v:
