CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) — Relatives of the majority of people killed in a Colorado movie theater rejected an invitation on Wednesday to attend its reopening later this month, calling it a "disgusting offer."
The parents, grandparents, cousins and widow of nine of the 12 people killed released a letter sent to the theater's owner, Cinemark, in which they criticized the Plano, Texas-based company for not reaching out to the families of victims to offer their condolences. They also said the company refused to meet with them one-on-one without lawyers present.
The families said they were asked to attend an "evening of remembrance" followed by a movie when the Aurora theater reopens on Jan. 17 in invitations sent two days after Christmas.
"Thanks for making what is a very difficult holiday season that much more difficult. Timing is everything and yours is awful," they wrote.
The company had no immediate comment.
Cinemark has been renovating the Aurora theater and plans to re-open it Jan. 17, a move the city's mayor said had widespread support in the community. Gov. John Hickenlooper is among those planning to attend.
The families of some victims have sued Cinemark. The father of the youngest person killed in the shooting, 6-year-old Veronica Moser-Sullivan, is among them. He didn't sign the letter but the girl's grandparents did.
Also Wednesday, prosecutors and defense lawyers said they're ready for a crucial hearing next week in which prosecutors will outline their case against James Holmes, who is charged with killing 12 people and wounding 70 during a midnight showing of the Batman movie "The Dark Night Rises" on July 20.
It starts Monday and is scheduled to run all week. At its conclusion, state District Judge William B. Sylvester will decide if the evidence is sufficient to put Holmes on trial.
During Wednesday's hearing, prosecutors and defense lawyers also discussed with Sylvester a sealed motion from the prosecution that made some reference to witnesses. Sylvester said he planned to rule on it later in the day but wouldn't refer to witnesses by name.
Holmes didn't say anything during the half-hour hearing.
He is charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder and attempted murder and hasn't been asked to enter a plea yet. His lawyers have said he suffers from mental illness.
Next week's preliminary hearing will give the public its first officially sanctioned look at much of the evidence against Holmes.
Sylvester imposed a gag order shortly after Holmes' arrest barring attorneys and investigators from speaking publicly about the case, and many documents have been sealed.
The University of Colorado, where Holmes was a graduate student, has also been tight-lipped about the case.
At prosecutors' request, Sylvester barred the university from releasing records requested by numerous media organizations. Prosecutors argued that the information could jeopardize Holmes' right to a fair trial. Sylvester initially agreed but amended his order last month to allow the release after media organizations objected in court.
Holmes was enrolled in a Ph.D. neuroscience program at the university. Investigators said he began stockpiling firearms and ammunition while taking classes in the spring.
In June, he made threats to a professor and on June 10 filed withdrawal papers after failing a year-end exam, prosecutors said. The next day he saw his school psychiatrist who tried to report him to a campus security committee, according to Holmes' lawyers.
At least they tried.
Seems like they're trying to be nice, but it does seem like kind of a dick move. :v:
They also said the company refused to meet with them one-on-one without lawyers present.
I can understand why the families are upset by this but I'm guessing the reason they want their lawyers is so they don't say anything that can be misconstrued as an admission of guilt which could be used to get compensation, when, as far as I can tell, there wasn't much they could do.
Why would they want to watch a film in the place their friends/family was killed?
Seriously what are they thinking.
It sounds like they tried to be nice but have no understanding of what these families are going through
I can totally understand the gesture this company tried to make, however it is fairly inappropriate. Family should just reject the offer, but not make a huge deal about it, it was truly the thought that count. I mean there is not much else a theater can do or offer....
It's like having a BBQ on the grave of your children. They should have known that, but at least they were trying to be nice.
They should of invited them to the evening of remembrance to some sort of banquet hall, Or something conpletely unrelated.
That's what you get when you try to be nice.

Perhaps I'm being ignorant, but I fail to see why they would do this? How was it the cinema's fault? They can't exactly do much to stop a madman with a gun once he's inside their theater. And even if they tried to stop him before he reached the room where the movie was shown, how well would that have worked out? I really don't understand their grounds for suing in this case.
I'd go.
What is with the guys face?
Is that a little wall eyed stare I spy?

If you're going to sue, you sue everyone even remotely connected to the situation. This is so that you get the best chance for a settlement(more parties sued means more parties to potentially settle). Also, you never know what a jury will do. Juries sometimes want to do something for the victims, especially children, so they need to be able to have someone with money sued to force them to pay.
It is very possible that a jury will find the theater chain partially responsible, that will allow the jury to award the victims money. It's not like the shooter has any money. Cinemark knows this and I bet right now their lawyers are calculating how much money total they will need to settle all cases.
I'd have gone, honestly. And what do they expect? If the theater -didn't- invite them, we'd have the same story here except the comments would be reversed and defending the families. It was a lose/lose situation. While they look a bit more embarrassing in this route, at least they also look more respectable than simply holding their tongues.
On one hand it is a nice gesture.
On the other hand it's equivalent would be like asking a Holocaust Survivor to revisit the camp they were in during the war.

Not saying this isn't nice, but still.

Wow, that's kinda fucked up. Sometimes I have mixed feelings on the concept of juries; this is one of those times.

I'm fairly sure holocaust survivors have been asked to revisit them in remembrance things.

He looks insane. You can see it in his eyes.
I still don't get why people always put the face of the killer everywhere instead of like the people who got shot/hurt of the location where it happened.

JESUS
That caught me off guard
Holy fuck, I'm sorry.
Terrible, terrible though. They try to be nice, but.. I suppose a reminder of what happened that day would only bring back bad memories and trauma.
Yeah go the theater and have a fucking PTSD breakdown.

They weren't there, so they can't have PTSD.
They weren't there, so they can't have PTSD.
I guess I assumed some of their family members were there with them.

That's fucking disgusting.
Let's fucking play the law game, here are the rules and here's a couple of pointers from the fucking experts to get you as much money as possible. You say it like it's a god damned chess strategy or something.
Imagine a world where you sued people who legitimately did you wrong and appropriate damages were awarded.

Male version of this.
Probably just trying to be nice, I mean what more can a small time movie theatre offer other then free tickets and food?
