what the actual fuck? this is goddamn evil, holy shit
Also the previous article posted was when it was first introduced, this article is about it actually being passed. So it's not actually late. EDIT: WHOOPS Turns out i was wrong
Kansas Anti-Gay Segregation bill Passed
Might want to change that title, it's a little confusing.
Just when I was making a report on Martin Luther King and reading up on Jim Crow laws, what the fuck America. Why are you going so backwards? This is so NOT helping the "southern states" stereotype.
Might want to change that title, it's a little confusing.
It's not really confusing with the hyphen there. Anti-gay is a conjoined word.
I give it less than a week before it's ruled unconstitutional. I know my country has some less than respectable people running it but I've got some faith in the Supreme Court to end it once and for all. And where does it say it was passed?
It won't last long, the courts will make it void because it violates the US constitution
huh thought developed countries were a little beyond this
It won't last long, the courts will make it void because it violates the US constitution
It actually doesn't as "sexual orientation" isn't covered in the civil rights act, leaving states to interpret that missing link as they please: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_Rights_Act_of_1964 And even if you try to argue the "moral" side of this, morality isn't an argument that stands up in a court of law.
This bill will have a good chance of being brought up through the courts, possibly even to the Supreme Court itself, and I am confident that they'll strike it down, creating a great presidence [editline]15th February 2014[/editline] ...if it passes, that is.

This is so NOT helping the "southern states" stereotype.
Come on, with what your flag says you're from or reside in it's too easy to counter this. All countries have problems. I guarantee America has many, many problems that have damaged its reputability and situation in recent years. But when you say "why are you so backwards America?", implying the whole of the country, it sounds a little ignorant.
because of this i quickly googled my state just to make sure they weren't doing this shit turns out theres actually a court case against our great state-wide same-sex marrage ban and they won (but tbh ohio recognises marrages from other states already so its not really that bad) also theres a potential to see an amendment on the ballot this november to legalize it completely, that'll be interesting to see on my campus when next november comes around, since there are a lot of muslims here and it is a catholic school with tons of catholic anti-abortion and a few anti-gay pro-marraige groups on campus yey ohio
how much effort America had put into making people equal
it's been an uphill battle every step of the way
This is worse than Russia's 'gay propaganda' law.
This is so NOT helping the "southern states" stereotype.
Except Kansas isn't a southern state, it's a mid-western state. And it was a union state during the civil war. There are many areas all over the country that are deeply rooted in racism and bigotry, it isn't solely limited to the south. I'd say Russia has had a far worse record historically regarding racism and bigotry.

You are merely trying to jab back at them for no reason. This is what I've just observed.

Lots of people against it, but also lots for it. Should prove for an interesting situation.
i wasn't sure how to read the title, like i thought "anti gay segregation? doesn't that mean they're against segregation for gays? isn't that good?" not that it matters since this law hasn't actually passed yet but god damn
oh ya, its probably likely to pass though, most of the voting population here is clustered around Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati/Dayton area
I'm not implying Russia has any kind of civil rights, it's just that with how much effort America had put into making people equal, it's really bad going several steps back.
But with Virginia's removal of the ban, is that also steps back?
This is worse than Russia's 'gay propaganda' law.
You will do anything to defend Russia's image won't you? And no, not really, this law doesn't authorize prosecution for being gay, or inhibit freedom of speech in any way, and chances are it'll get struck down at the first court case it's in.

And no, not really, this law doesn't authorize prosecution for being gay, or inhibit freedom of speech in any way, and chances are it'll get struck down at the first court case it's in.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. In addition to barring all anti-discrimination lawsuits against private employers, the new law permits government employees to deny service to gays in the name of “religious liberty.” This is nothing new, but the sweep of Kansas’ statute is breathtaking. Any government employee is given explicit permission to discriminate against gay couples—not just county clerks and DMV employees, but literally anyone who works for the state of Kansas. If a gay couple calls the police, an officer may refuse to help them if interacting with a gay couple violates his religious principles. State hospitals can turn away gay couples at the door and deny them treatment with impunity. Gay couples can be banned from public parks, public pools, anything that operates under the aegis of the Kansas state government. It gets worse. The law’s advocates claim that it applies only to gay couples—but there’s no clear limiting principle in the text of the bill that would keep it from applying to gay individuals as well. A catch-all clause allows businesses and bureaucrats to discriminate against gay people so long as this discrimination is somehow “related to, or related to the celebration of, any marriage, domestic partnership, civil union or similar arrangement.” (Emphases mine.) This subtle loophole is really just a blank check to discriminate: As long as an individual believes that his service is somehow linked to a gay union of any form, he can legally refuse his services. And since anyone who denies gays service is completely shielded from any charges, no one will ever have to prove that their particular form of discrimination fell within the four corners of the law.
It totally does authorize persecution.
It totally does authorize persecution.
I never said persecution, I said: Prosecution: The institution of legal proceedings (particularly criminal) against a person. The Russian law effectively outlaws being openly gay, this one does not.

This law effectively authorizes persecution against gay's. You'll do anything to defend Kansas' image won't you.
