I'm new to IRC. I've heard about it for a long time but never got around to checking it out (plus I never wanted to pay for mIRC). I was wondering if anyone knew any IRC channels that were worth checking out. I was looking into something along the lines of programming, php, or video/computer games. I would even be fine just watching people chat and joining in anytime I feel like it
irc://irc.freenode.org/php
it brought me to a channel named ##overflow. :(

Read the topic, the channel ##php gets locked down often because of botnet floods. You can just register your nickname by typing "/nickserv register password email" or something similar. Also you can always join Garry and his goons at irc://irc.gamesurge.net/gmod .
o cool thanks :)
If you are into SPARC, MIPS or other weird computing platforms and their associated hardware, software and programming languages, go try irc.nekochan.net #nekochan
We also clown around a lot in there.
If you´re a WoW fan you should join irc.quakenet.org/#mmo-champion.
The FP IRC is pretty much irc.gamesurge.net/#gmod. The FP coding channel is at irc.gamesurge.net/#fpcoders.
if you're into the hl2 leak check out irc://irc.p2p-network.net/hl2beta
Jeez, you find so many people using irc. It's like a corner of the classroom where only the cool kids play. I'm shocked.

if by cool kids you mean the lonely internet users who want friends
If your a fan of programming and gaming or just general chat, i would suggest checking out:
irc.dark-alex.org - #wtf (this channel meets all your demands in the first post lol, also the guy who made the powder toy hangs out in there)
if you connect to that network then type /list you can check out some of the other channels, related to programming and such, very small network, but a great community.
