A MOTORIST is dead after a peak-hour collision between a car and a train at Cheltenham Station.
The fatal smash, between a Holden Commodore and a Metro train at about 4.30pm, is expected to disrupt commuter services.
Witness Seamus Timms told the Frankston Standard Leader that he and about five other people were waiting on the platform of the station, off Charman Rd, when the car stopped on the tracks.
“The crossing gates came down and the (train driver) blew his horn but he didn’t move,’’ Mr Timms said.
He said the people on the platform and others in the car park shouted to the man to get him to move off the tracks.
“It hit the car and pushed it along, and it got wedged between the train and the platform.
"A couple of us called 000 and then the car caught on fire, there were flames coming out from under the bonnet.’’
An officer at the scene confirmed the man had died but did not have any further information.
There were no passengers on the train at the time.
Metro Trains says there will be extensive delays on the Frankston line, and buses have been ordered to replace trains between Moorabbin and Mordialloc.
VicRoads says there is heavy congestion in the area, with delays back to Nepean Highway.

:( poor bloke
I wonder if it was a suicide. Never fuck with trains, you'll never win that one...
Oh man, and poor guy.
Cheltenham station is like 2 stops away from my nearest station, and I pass it regularly too.

I'm wondering that too since a train horn is really loud in a car. He could of had difficulties with the engine or something.
We can't make assumptions till they investigate this, still sad nonetheless.
Wow, that's awful.
Still not as bad as the situation I encountered with the girl getting eaten by the horse
What the fuck, I live right next to this station
Holy christ I live in Cheltenham. I would've actually seen it if I hadn't gone to visit someone.
Shows you how strong the railway cars are. The car's totalled, The metro is not even phased.
Oh crap I live near cheltenham too and know the witness, he's the guy in aviation attire next to the train. Ill see if i can contact him

This is now a Cheltenham meetup thread.
Derp misread the state name :v:
That's... Wow. So he wouldn't move? Was it a suicide, or do you think he just got very very unlucky?

Lol hi Novangel
stay away from me omg
We should ban public transportation system once and for all!
Woh I was coming back from the city on one of the trains just before this

100+ tons vs 2 tons. A truck hitting you would be significantly less powerful than a train hitting a car.
Only 4 stops from me. Sad to hear.
:( I am sad that this happened. I went by that station last sunday to a funeral. My prayers go out for these people.

Let's not forget the fact this train is travelling at hundreds of kilometres per hour while the car is stationary.
Newton sucks man.
holy fuck i live right in front of cheltham station too!!

!!!
If he had engine trouble he would have hopped out the car
Not sure if it's the same over there but in England they have a minimum of something like 3 minutes until the train passes through the crossing (starting from when the barriers close), which is plenty of time to hop out and go over the barriers
If there is something similar there then this is most likely suicide

You guys must run your trains fast down there, up here they max out at around 60KM/h.
The train driver is though, he will be fucked up for life.
Honestly you need a pretty strong will to be a train driver. People race the train daily, every time they drive the thing they have to deal with racers.

In the netherlands here, our trains go 120km/h as a standard

I just guessed, I'm sure it's actually around there :v:

What? Explain.
Poor bastard.
Oh shit, I remember driving through, and seeing all the emergency vehicles on my way home setting up the cades, his kid was in the car too apparently, but there's no word on him.
