NASA is funding a 3D food printer, and it'll start with pizza

NASA is funding research into 3D-printed food. Mechanical engineer Anjan Contractor received a $125,000 grant from the agency to build a prototype 3D printer with the aim of automating food creation. It's hoped the system could provide astronauts food during long-distance space travel, but its creator has the loftier aim of solving the increasing food shortages around the world by cutting down on waste. The software for the printer will be open-source, while the hardware is based on the open-source RepRap Mendel 3D printer.

Cheese Pizza - Hot.
I do, in fact, want one.
Sauce pizzas made by open source software
First step to Star Trek food replicators?
I geeked a little.
Great, for now we had paper jam in our printers, now we'll have jam jam...

my exact thoughts
YES
Now THIS is what will feed the colonists; I was wondering how long it would be before we could start 3D printing food, and soon we'll be able to print pizza. I imagine places like Pizza Hut and Domino's would want a slice of the tech if this kicks off, though I'd also imagine that early prototypes wouldn't be as great as ones crafted through modern non-printing methods of pizza making.
However, here's hoping that pizza-printers don't end up causing small-time pizzerias to go outta business in the future.
The 3D printer is the technological breakthrough of our generation, and we are lucky to witness it as it emerges. Give it enough time and this could change civilization as much as the invention of the PC did.

How on Earth would you download a pizza?
How on Earth would you download a pizza?
It's pretty easy? You download the recipe, then you give the recipe to your 3D food printer, given that you have the ingredients in the machine you can print it out.
Soon I can have my kebab deep-dish pizza in .txt format.
Coffee. Black.

Good luck with cheese jams.

"You wouldn't download a pizza..."

Not likely to happen, other places have different recipes and methods of making their pizzas, i used to think all pizza tasted the same, then i ate at a pizzeria on long island.
Oh god, the first generation of food replicators will probably taste like utter shit.
If you thought cafeteria pizza was bad...

Well, it's powder printed into food form so it can't be that bad. That's the process Pringles uses to make their chips afaik.

It's funny because it would be used in space.
