• E-cigarettes to fall under Queensland tobacco laws
Queensland is set to become the first state to subject e-cigarettes to the same laws as the tobacco variety. The State Government wants to amend tobacco laws so e-cigarettes can only be used in designated smoking areas, cannot be sold to minors, and cannot be advertised or publicly displayed. Health Minister Lawrence Springborg will introduce the amendment bill into Parliament today, with the laws due to come into effect from January 1, 2015.

The new laws will primarily be enforced by Queensland Health officers who will be able to ask smokers to stop, give a warning or issue an on-the-spot fine of about $220. Penalties to retailers will also apply.

Like regular cigarettes, the Tobacco Act amendments will not ban these devices outright but will subject them to tough restrictions.
I really don't see how they can be subject to the same laws, since they are very different. What about the flavours without nicotine in them as well? Source
e-cigarettes can only be used in designated smoking areas, cannot be sold to minors, and cannot be advertised or publicly displayed.
don't see anything wrong with this
Even if they're not the same as real cigarettes, it doesn't make it any less annoying to people.
Even if they're not the same as real cigarettes, it doesn't make it any less annoying to people.
What I find weird is that there are whole stores dedicated to them, as if you were going to the dealership of some specia sports car brand that only sells the best of the best of one specific line of their cars there. And I've seen a few people with E-cigs or vapour cigs or whatever those were called. Nothing against them or anything, but they look so fucking stupid. They remind me of how you can easily spot a tourist in a crowd of people. wow that escalated into a rant.
Even if they're not the same as real cigarettes, it doesn't make it any less annoying to people.
As someone who vapes i can say that the only way I've annoyed people is when they walk into a room and it smells like cookies- but there are no cookies.
How common are these anyway? I don't think I've ever even seen anyone puffing on one yet but I can't imagine them being all that noticeable. Having them follow the same laws as tobacco's probably just for convenience really rather than legislating separately. They are very different though; even from what little I know about them.
How common are these anyway? They are less noticeable than normal cigarettes and the smell of the flavour (Chocolate, bubblegum, whatever flavour) sure beats normal cig smell.
In the last year they've started to get popular in the area where I live
Haven't seen e-cigs over here apart from 2 people in my high school show them off like they're the bee's knees Honestly tho I'm okay with this legalisation but most e-cigs don't look like cigarettes so you can easily smoke them just about anywhere and not get caught Police in Ipswich don't crack down on people smoking in those no smoking zones, but that's either because they don't want to deal with eshays or Aboriginals and start a riot
Like regular cigarettes, the Tobacco Act amendments will not ban these devices outright but will subject them to tough restrictions.
And after the restrictions comes the regulation and the sweet sweet licensing and monitoring fees.
e-cigs are quite popular at my school because you can smoke them in the restrooms very easily, and they don't require carrying a lighter.
Even if they're not the same as real cigarettes, it doesn't make it any less annoying to people.
the problem is people aren't using them with common sense, while the smoke isn't harmful its still annoying to have someone blow a cloud of smoke in your face, just don't use it in the wrong time and places
I use an e-cig, and a lot of places in my city don't care, as long as you aren't blowing it in other peoples faces. There are MANY stores for products here as well. There's at least 5 in my area of the city. Really from what i've seen, the only people who REALLY have a problem with it, are people who think that smoking is the absolute biggest sin against humanity ever.
It just forms a cloud of ego IMO. Those that use e-cigs for the most part have fun with the fact that they can smoke indoors. I personally don't like it. It's generally better to blanketban the whole e-cig thing in areas where smoking isn't allowed because some people are legitimately very sensitive to stuff like that( eg some people cannot breathe where fog machines are) and if it ends up having toxic chems in the smoke the smoker won't really care. Smell-good scents to me are really offputting and seem to encourage some people that don't smoke to use ecigs.

People get stabbed and the attackers get away with it.
Ipswich is such a shit hole because the police don't enforce any fucking laws. I am not trying to sound racist here but honestly there's been a lot of times when arguments have turned violent with Aboriginals and when the police come they don't want to do anything "in fear of starting a race riot" so they let them continue. Theres like, 3 stores in less than a 3km range. I think it was on the same street to boot. I spent august doing the same ride at 7 in the morning every day, and I used to pass by this place while riding the metro where you'd see almost 10 e-cig shops in less than 10 minutes. And these shops always look like dealerships or even banks because of all the space and for looking all alike and modern, with the gear on displays. And the people I see with them is like... They carry it on a strap around their neck, it looks so dumb :v: But if its an healthier option than the usual choices, vape away. It saddens me seeing people 5 years younger than me already smoking.
there's no such thing as second hand smoke when it comes to ecigs
unless someones being a dick about it how does anyone ever get annoyed with ecig vapor. care about more important things
The vapor dissipates much quicker than smoke, they need to be regulated akin to cigarettes, but to ban usage outright like regular smokes is terrible and defeats the purpose. People switch to e-cigs which are much safer than smokes so they have the freedom to not have to stand outside to get a quick hit of nicotine, if they are forced to isolate themselves like regular smokers, they may as well just switch back to regular cigarettes. The problem is that the health associations don't care about the people that enjoy the benefits to nicotine, they only want to try to get people to stop using nicotine products all together. It's a bunch of political bullshit tbh
They've gotten pretty popular around here. Especially those one-way e-cigs since they are cheap as hell, though they don't taste nearly as good.
Just bought my first vape yesterday, actually. Funny this article should show up. Its policy in my work that you can only smoke vape/cigs/chew tabacco in the Lounge. I've had to tell at least 4 or 5 people in the past few days alone to quit smoking vape in the bowling pit. I bought one so it can help me QUIT smoking or at least cut me down a lot on it. It's extremely harmless though and sometimes it smells delicious. Mine tastes like fruity goodness and I love it. If I had this in high school I probably would've done way better than I did.

Got one of those small Itaste ones, not the big ones that billow smoke, haven't had a real cig in over 3 months so far. Also went down from 18mg nicotine to 12mg. For what it's worth.

Grrr, ban thing that I don't like/have done no research on, because it looks stupid.
But... they're totally different second hand wise
I actually agree with them. Smoking area, yes. No selling to minors, yes. No advertising them like toys, yes. They're still being used to imbibe an addictive substance, and I really don't want the restaurant I'm in filled with a vape fog.
I have no strong opinions on this since I don't use an e-cig or know anyone who does. I understand the ban on advertising and sale to minors. That much is common sense. But at the same time forcing people who are trying to give up smoking through e-cigs to share a spot with smokers doesn't seem like a great idea. Also with this legislation you lose the people who want to get their nicotine fix indoors, since why bother with an e-cig if you have to go out. You can just smoke a cigarette. E-cigs pose tough problems but blanket banning their indoor use seems to go against everything they were designed to do. Seriously after looking at it more, I feel that this piece of legislation will benefit tobacco companies.
