BUCHANAN - The Indian Point nuclear plant is now the first in the country operating with an expired license from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, after the license for one of its two reactors expired yesterday.
The federal license for Indian Point 2 was issued on Sept. 28, 1973 and was set to expire after 40 years. Protesters rallied at five locations throughout the Hudson Valley yesterday, saying they want the plant shut down because the aging reactors are dangerous.
As this plant resides and provides me with power it's quite worrying that we have these groups protesting that we need to shut it down cause it's so dangerous, but it's fine. People taking any safety results out of context and keep pressuring Cuomo to shut it down but we have literally nothing to replace the giant power source that it provides. Luckily enough we have enough democrats who arn't blind around here and recognize Nuclear is a lot better then going back to Oil and Coal, and Wind Mills arn't effective enough around here.
Considering this plant is going to be decided hopefully within the next year, It may have a cascading effect for the rest of the plants in the country. If you're pro Nuclear power I recommend you start getting out there.

Instead of fighting to keep outdated reactors going, we should be building some brand damn new reactors.

NYS can't even build a bridge, you expect us to scrap something together that makes energy?
They should probably just compromise and refurbish the existing plant, it would probably increase power output, lowering the cost of utilities for the people it serves and encouraging more business and development in the area while also making the plant safer for the long-term.

This really isn't a matter of being "pro-nuclear energy", this is an issue of the reactors being old
Which is actually a pretty big deal, and as much as we here at Facepunch like to c/j over nuclear power, these protesters have a very valid point

That sort of thing would be very expensive and likely require taking down power for a while, which is a lot less useful than just building a completely new plant would be. However, there hasn't been a new plant built in like... 20 years. It's way WAY too expensive and difficult to get past all the red tape.
Kill the power.
Let the lights go down and then to a full-page article in the newspapers saying "Tell me when your alternate energy sources save you".
At all costs, those reactors must remain online until replacements are built and ready to attach to the grid.
Oh wow, I should ask my friend about this, he works there as security.

The only point one of the protestors in the video raised was that of nuclear waste, which really has nothing to do with the safety of the plant.

Start revving up the political machine and get some new reactors in production, Mr.Neider!

As far as I know we've already approved some new reactors to account for us already taking down four this year.
Nuclear power? Brown people? (Indians are brown right?) sanction them

Yes, of course, let's sanction the "brown people."

They're pretty close to the "orange people", though.
I see signs saying close indian point all the time here. I don't think people realize that if they close it there's nothing to replace it with. I REALLY don't think the government would let another Chernobyl happen after all the shit that has occurred from that. People scream for clean safe inexpensive power that isnt nuclear and its just not possible yet.

Get a CANDU.
Recycle reuse.

nuclear safety is piss poor in the United States, the regulators rely on the power plant's owners to do inspection. Being licensed probably wouldn't make a difference.
Stuff some thorium in there, it'll be okay.
NYS can't even build a bridge, you expect us to scrap something together that makes energy?
My legislature just voted against replacing the I-5 bridge between Vancouver,Wa and Portland,Or even though it's been operating, in part, since 1917. The traffic it causes is fucking retarded. The Federal government was even going to pay for some it out of the Transportation budget. Now Oregon is looking in to finding funding to pay for the bridge without Washington's help, but they won't build the interchanges on our side of the river if they do.
[editline]8th October 2013[/editline]
Our legislatures threw a fit because they wanted to extend light rail from Portland into Vancouver too.
NYS can't even build a bridge, you expect us to scrap something together that makes energy?
The only reasons why NY can't get their shit together is cause of the hotheads in Albany.
the funny thing is environmentists are both the culprit and the biggest protester about nuclear waste. when we want to put it somewhere...say an irradiated contaminated place in Nevada, they protest us moving it and lobby for it to stay there. then when it builds up they protest about why the government hasn't done something about the nuclear waste that's piling up in their back yard....
then they block all attempts to build new reactors by lobbying for red tape and then they protest at old ones because they are unsafe and dangerous.
STOP BEING SO STUPID ALREADY! WE NEED POWER AND IF YOU DONT WANT TO SEE COAL OR GAS, THEN LET US BUILD THE DAMN PLANT THE RIGHT WAY then we can shut down these old plants
[editline]8th October 2013[/editline]
its all these stupid sheeple who grew up in the cold war and equate nuclear power with nuclear bombs and death.
Get your license renewed
Problem solved

Are you even reading the thread?
Stuff some thorium in there, it'll be okay.
My school level science might be a little rusty but don't you still need to have a little bit of fissile uranium in order to make it viable? That and the fact that a bulk of the world's reactor designs (I think it was shallow water reactor? Light water reactor?)would make using Thorium a little complicated?
In theory, would it be more expensive to adapt older reactors to use Thorium vs just building new ones?
