• U.S. to apologize for giving Guatemalans STD's
U.S. government medical researchers intentionally infected hundreds of people in Guatemala, including institutionalized mental patients, with gonorrhea and syphilis without their knowledge or permission more than 60 years ago. Many of those infected were encouraged to pass the infection onto others as part of the study. About one third of those who were infected never got adequate treatment. On Friday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius are expected to offer extensive apologies for actions taken by the U.S. Public Health Service. The apology will be to Guatemala and Hispanic residents of the United States, according to officials. The first public discussion will be a telebriefing with Dr. Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health and Arturo Valenzuela, Assistant Secretary of State for Western Affairs around 11 a.m. ET. The episode raises inevitable comparisons to the infamous Tuskegee experiment, the Alabama study where hundreds of African-American men were told they were being treated for syphilis, but in fact were denied treatment. That U.S. government study lasted from 1932 until press reports revealed it in 1972. The Guatemala experiment, which were conducted between 1946 and 1948, never provided any useful information. Records were hidden. They were discovered by Susan Reverby, a professor of women's studies at Wellesley College and will be posted on her website Friday. According to Reverby’s report, the Guatemalan project was co-sponsored by the U.S. Public Health Service, the NIH, the Pan-American Health Sanitary Bureau (now the Pan American Health Organization) and the Guatemalan government. The researchers were trying to determine whether the antibiotic penicillin could prevent early syphilis infection, not just cure it, Reverby writes. The Guatemalan experiements involved 696 subjects – male prisoners and female patients in the National Mental Health Hospital. Reverby, who has written extensive about the Tuskegee experiments, found the evidence while conducting further research on Tuskegee.
Source There are no words.
At least it was 60 years ago. It doesn't make it right, but if it happened today, it'd be a much, much bigger problem.
It's nice that we're finally apologizing for all the shit we pulled on disenfranchised people 40-100 years ago. Shame it doesn't really fix anything, but at least we're trying to make a gesture of good will.
sorry m8
Wow U.S, I knew you guys were cocky and all that, but this is just...wow
Let's infect the researchers and "forget" to treat them :downs:
No seriously, how come we're so fucked up sometimes?...
What the fuck.

Wow that is... unexpected.
The worst Britain ever did was give cats and soldiers LSD.
that's nothing compared to what the japanese did in ww2, and they still haven't apologized! can you guys believe it?
Ewww [editline]08:06AM[/editline]
that's nothing compared to what the japanese did in ww2, and they still haven't apologized! can you guys believe it?
Yes they have
It was the Jews.
The worst Britain ever did was give cats and soldiers LSD.

that's nothing compared to what the japanese did in ww2, and they still haven't apologized! can you guys believe it?
Don't forget about the holocaust, and the crap the English / Colonies did to the indians, which was really, really ugly. Besides, Bazy boy, Japan was demiliterized by the US and we have them by the sac.
The worst Britain ever did was give cats and soldiers LSD.
Yeah, because it's not like they ever waged war against African states, oppressed Indians, or rounded up Boers into concentration camps. Seriously, most nations on earth have done something horrible. I get sick of this "WE'RE NOT AS BAD BY COMPARISON" shit.
Sounds like the tuskegee experiments
Wow, that's... wow... :arghfist:[IMG_thumb]http://www.mapsofworld.com/images/world-countries-flags/guatemala-flag.gif[/IMG_thumb]
The worst Britain ever did was give cats and soldiers LSD.
The cats part I understand, but what is bad about giving soldiers LSD?
They should give the families of these people money. Lots of money.
haha thats alright guys just give us a warning next time!!
The worst Britain ever did was give cats and soldiers LSD.
Yeah. That's totally worse than inventing concentration camps. Totally.
Yeah. That's totally worse than inventing concentration camps. Totally.
I'm not talking about the whole history of Britain you dense mother fuckers, I'm talking about experiments like the topic at hand.
Fucking USA.
They also tried to sterilize lots of Puerto Rican women decades ago.
Well fuck America thinking they can do all this and get away with it. I for one think all the shit Americas done to the world be done to them.
The U.S gave Guatemala a serious burn, and they feel that burn every time they piss
How did they infect them? :ohdear:
Didn't the US infect their own citizens with some other disease once?
