Reinvented it for battery manufacturing. No existing Li-Ion factories are even close to as vertically integrated as this one.
He is really a bad public speaker, but on the other side, it shows he is a human, and not a corporate robot.

Are they starting construction? Was the building they kept showing a CGI rendering?
I thought they meant they started producing cars now

The first phase of the building has been producing batteries for awhile now. This is just a party showing it off to the public.
When will it turn into a Gigafortress?

The factory is intended to be net zero energy. Among other issues with constructing, managing and using nuclear reactors, it's difficult to do that with the windup/wind down times of reactors in general.
Plus the gigafactory has a [I]lot[/I] of roof space.

im just curious what they plan to do during night though, will they use batteries to store excess energy from the day?

Yes the big battery factory will use batteries. Powered by a mix of solar and wind with climate control being handled by geothermal.
