Islamic State militants say they have destroyed an ancient Mar Behnam Monastery in northern Iraq. The monastery dates back to the 4th century and reportedly has one of the most valuable Syriac libraries in existence. The images, displaying the destruction of a monastery tomb complex in Nineveh Province, were released on the internet on Thursday. It’s not yet clear when the site was destroyed.
The photos also allegedly depict the bombing of a number of Shiite mosques and shrines in the district of Hamdania, northern Iraq, reports ARA News, citing local residents.
The authenticity of the photos showing the monastery destruction was confirmed by Dr Nicholas al-Jeloo, an expert on Assyrian monasteries in Iraq from the University of Melbourne, to International Business Times.
"I didn't want to see the pictures. This is terrible. I'm in shock," said al-Jeloo who previously visited the site in 2010. He added, “It was one of the most richly carved monastery complexes in northern Mesopotamia up until today.”
"IS is destroying the rich cultural fabric of the area, the multilayered, multilingual, multi-ethnic aspects of society. It's not just our heritage; it's the heritage of the world. It is part of our history, and now it's gone."
Christians and the other minorities in Iraq are in great danger, believes Ignatius Joseph III Yonan, patriarch of Antioch.
“We call on the world that calls itself civilized to help us stay in our land, and defend our rights as citizens,” he told the Guardian.
The site, also considered home to “precious and rich Syrian and Arabic manuscripts” was captured by IS militants in the summer of 2014. The resident clergymen fled to the nearby city of Qaraqoush, according to local residents
Mar Behnam Monastery was founded in the 4th century in honor of Behnam and Sarah, children of Senchareb, an Assyrian king. They were murdered after converting to Christianity. In 12th century, the Syriac Orthodox Church renovated the monastery.
Syriac calligraphy presenting the genealogy of Jesus from the Gospel of Matthew, dating back to the 17th century, was also reportedly preserved in the monastery.
Man, if they make it that far, I say we all give in and convert.
Scourge of the Earth, they need to be banished to the fucking sun.
Why would they destroy a christian monument? Christians worship the same god and messiah that they do.
Guess its just further proof this isn't religion based?

Yeah, because Daesh and logic totally go hand in hand.

Guessing you have an extremely limited knowledge of the group.

Because DAESH fucking hates culture of any kind, given that they also blew up the remains of a Assyrian city from 3000 years ago.
Which is just saddening that over 30 centuries of history gets reduced to nothing purely because some savages feel the need to destroy everything they don't like.
The fucking Neanderthals appreciated culture more than the filthy savages of DAESH.
Ignoring the fact that they consider even members of other sects as apostates worthy of death, since they are wahhabists.
Still I dont think its as simple as "we worship the same god"
You will never see anyone admit this in real life. They follow different books and different lifestyles. They are in substance very different.
I await the day that those that were to cowardly to kill themselves in the organisation when it collapses are put before a court for crimes against humanity, it will be better than the Nuremberg trials.
Human civilization being destroyed and we can't get off our asses and pass a UN resolution, even Russia and China can't defend this shit anymore
Uh I don't think they've ever defended ISIS.

We need to intervene directly. We needed to months ago.
The longer we allow this to go on, the more priceless irretrievable artifacts of human civilization are going to be needlessly destroyed, and the more innocent people are going to die.
This needs to end. It needed to end a long time ago. This situation is just getting more and more out of hand, and it's only going to get worse.
So, one's capable of anything as long as it involves enough mindless violence?
.. or can we get to bombing these guys back to the stone-age already?

We never stopped.
What you give will be given back ten fold Daesh
Who else thinks that the only reason a full-on invasion hasn't occurred yet is because the countries of the world want as many radicals to join them so they can all be eliminated at once
Call me a tinfoiler but this appears to be what is happening

They sound like they are doing this just to piss people off and cause more anguish.

Religion and rational thinking don't really go together.
damn I need to find some band aids now, that fucking edge
he's not far off you know

I used to go "well, if that's your personnel belief and you aren't pushing it on people then that's fine".
Hell, there can even be positive elements in religion. Buddhism for example has some good ideas on how to treat other people, and the teachings of Christ (what he himself directly said or wrote) are pretty good if you cut away the BS and myth surrounding them.
But religion itself, blind belief "it is said, therefore it is" is the complete opposite of rational thought.
And far too much stupid shit is/has been done or justified in the name of religion for me to have any respect left for ignorant and destructive superstition.
Uh I don't think they've ever defended ISIS.
He's probably thinking of Russia defending the Assad regime and getting mixed up.

Reminds me of someone who disagrees with that view...

Do you think we can send the Tea Party to join them in elimination too?
Here's another Einstein quote for you...
"The word god is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honourable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish. No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this."
